[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46milluminated circle about our failing camp-fire and                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mseated himself upon a rock.                                                  [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46m  'You are not the first to explore this region,' he                         [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46msaid gravely.                                                                [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46m  Nobody controverted his statement; he was him-                             [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mself proof of its truth, for he was not of our party and                     [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mmust have been somewhere near when we camped.                                [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mMoreover, he must have companions not far away;                              [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mit was not a place where one would be living or trav-                        [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46melling alone. For more than a week we had seen, be-                          [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46msides ourselves and our animals, only such living                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mthings as rattlesnakes and horned toads. In an Ari-                          [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mzona desert one does not long coexist with only such                         [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mcreatures as these: one must have pack animals, sup-                         [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mplies, arms--'an outfit.' And all these imply com-                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mrades. It was perhaps a doubt as to what manner                              [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mof men this unceremonious stranger's comrades                                [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mmight be, together with something in his words in-                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mterpretable as a challenge that caused every man                             [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mof our half-dozen 'gentlemen adventurers' to rise                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mto a sitting posture and lay his hand upon a weapon                          [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46m--an act signifying, in that time and place, a policy                        [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mof expectation. The stranger gave the matter no                              [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mattention and began again to speak in the same                               [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mdeliberate, uninflected monotone in which he had                             [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mdelivered his first sentence:                                                [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46m  'Thirty years ago Ramon Gallegos, William Shaw,                            [1m[37;46m[40m

[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mcrossed the Santa Catalina mountains and travelled                           [1m[37;46m[40m

[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mtry permitted. We were prospecting and it was our                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mintention, if we found nothing, to push through to the                       [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mGila river at some point near Big Bend, where we                             [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46munderstood there was a settlement. We had a good                             [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46moutfit, but no guide--just Ramon Gallegos, William                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mShaw, George W. Kent, and Berry Davis.'                                      [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46m  The man repeated the names slowly and distinctly,                          [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mas if to fix them in the memories of his audience,                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mevery member of which was now attentively observ-                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46ming him, but with a slackened apprehension regard-                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46ming his possible companions somewhere in the dark-                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mness that seemed to enclose us like a black wall; in                         [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mthe manner of this volunteer historian was no sug-                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mgestion of an unfriendly purpose. His act was rather                         [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mthat of a harmless lunatic than an enemy. We were                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mnot so new to the country as not to know that the                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46msolitary life of many a plainsman had a tendency                             [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mto develop eccentricities of conduct and character                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mnot always easily distinguishable from mental aber-                          [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mration. A man is like a tree: in a forest of his fellows                     [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mhe will grow as straight as his generic and individual                       [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mnature permits; alone in the open, he yields to the                          [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mdeforming stresses and tortions that environ him.                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mSome such thoughts were in my mind as I watched                              [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mthe man from the shadow of my hat, pulled low to                             [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mshut out the firelight. A witless fellow, no doubt, but                      [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mwhat could he be doing there in the heart of a                               [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mdesert?                                                                      [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46m  Having undertaken to tell this story, I wish that                          [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mI could describe the man's appearance; that would                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mbe a natural thing to do. Unfortunately, and some-                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mwhat strangely, I find myself unable to do so with                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46many degree of confidence, for afterward no two of                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mus agreed as to what he wore and how he looked;                              [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mand when I try to set down my own impressions they                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46melude me. Anyone can tell some kind of story;                                [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mnarration is one of the elemental powers of the race.                        [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mBut the talent for description is a gift.                                    [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46m  Nobody having broken silence the visitor went on                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mto say:                                                                      [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46m  'This country was not then what it is now. There                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mwas not a ranch between the Gila and the Gulf.                               [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mThere was a little game here and there in the moun-                          [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mtains, and near the infrequent water-holes grass                             [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46menough to keep our animals from starvation. If we                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mshould be so fortunate as to encounter no Indians we                         [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mmight get through. But within a week the purpose of                          [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mthe expedition had altered from discovery of wealth                          [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mto preservation of life. We had gone too far to go                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mback, for what was ahead could be no worse than                              [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mwhat was behind; so we pushed on, riding by night                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mto avoid Indians and the intolerable heat, and con-                          [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mcealing ourselves by day as best we could. Some-                             [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mtimes, having exhausted our supply of wild meat                              [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mand emptied our casks, we were days without food                             [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mor drink; then a water-hole or a shallow pool in                             [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mthe bottom of an arroyo so restored our strength                             [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mand sanity that we were able to shoot some of the                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mwild animals that sought it also. Sometimes it was                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46ma bear, sometimes an antelope, a coyote, a cougar--                          [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mthat was as God pleased; all were food.                                      [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46m  'One morning as we skirted a mountain range,                               [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mseeking a practicable pass, we were attacked by a                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mband of Apaches who had followed our trail up a                              [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mgulch--it is not far from here. Knowing that they                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46moutnumbered us ten to one, they took none of their                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46musual cowardly precautions, but dashed upon us                               [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mat a gallop, firing and yelling. Fighting was out of                         [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mthe question: we urged our feeble animals up the                             [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mgulch as far as there was footing for a hoof, then                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mthrew ourselves out of our saddles and took to the                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mchaparral on one of the slopes, abandoning our en-                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mtire outfit to the enemy. But we retained our rifles,                        [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mevery man--Ramon Gallegos, William Shaw,                                     [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mGeorge W. Kent, and Berry Davis.'                                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46m  'Same old crowd,' said the humorist of our party.                          [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mHe was an Eastern man, unfamiliar with the decent                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mobservances of social intercourse. A gesture of dis-                         [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mapproval from our leader silenced him, and the                               [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mstranger proceeded with his tale:                                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46m  'The savages dismounted also, and some of them                             [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mran up the gulch beyond the point at which we had                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mleft it, cutting off further retreat in that direction and                   [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mforcing us on up the side. Unfortunately the chapar-                         [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mral extended only a short distance up the slope, and                         [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mas we came into the open ground above we took                                [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mthe fire of a dozen rifles; but Apaches shoot badly                          [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mwhen in a hurry, and God so willed it that none of us                        [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mfell. Twenty yards up the slope, beyond the edge                             [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mof the brush, were vertical cliffs, in which, directly                       [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46min front of us, was a narrow opening. Into that we                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mran, finding ourselves in a cavern about as large                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mas an ordinary room in a house. Here for a time we                           [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mwere safe: a single man with a repeating rifle could                         [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mdefend the entrance against all the Apaches in                               [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mthe land. But against hunger and thirst we had                               [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mno defence. Courage we still had, but hope was a                             [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mmemory.                                                                      [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46m  'Not one of those Indians did we afterward see,                            [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mbut by the smoke and glare of their fires in the gulch                       [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mwe knew that by day and by night they watched                                [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mwith ready rifles in the edge of the bush--knew that                         [1m[37;46m[40m

[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mtake three steps into the open. For three days, watch-                       [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46ming in turn, we held out before our suffering became                         [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46minsupportable. Then--It was the morning of the                               [1m[37;46m[40m
[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mfourth day--Ramon Gallegos said:                                             [1m[37;46m[40m

[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46mif I shock you, but for me the time is come to beat                          [1m[37;46m[40m

[1m[37;46m[1m[37;46m  'He knelt upon the rock floor of the cave and                              [1m[37;46m[40m
