PC/X-Magazine is free for everyone and spreading is encouraged. If you
want to have a printed copy of the current issue (or from prior
issues), call our BBS and post a message to us so we can work some-
  thing out.

We will try to make this a very interesting zine with all kinds of in-
formation that's usefull for (almost) anyone running PC-Express(c).
Besides this textfile we incorporate much more in the archives that we
make such as a list of all the BBS's in the world that are using PC-
Express(c) (registered and unregistered), a source file for an utility
that someone has coded (and one that works :-)), some ANSI- & ASCII-
  texts, a vote sheet etc.

In the magazine itself we'll try to hold on to the following contents:

  a) General information,
  b) What's in the archive that you've got (downloaded),
  c) Editorial section,
  d) Other information,
  e) New things, bugs and idea's,
  f) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's),
  g) Short story (optional),
  h) Source section (MugSHot),
  i) Tool reports,
  j) Released utilities / tools to be coded,
  k) Registrations and changes,
  l) How to register your copy of PC-Express(c),
  m) Distributors of this zine,
  n) End notes.

We'll do much be we can't do it alone; if you have a source-file that
you want to share with others so that they too can learn to code, if
you have a textfile with important information, if you have an addi-
tion to the list with (un-)registered BBS's in your country etc.
please give it to one the people that is able to incorporate it in the
next issue of the magazine. We all must try to make this zine interes-
  ting for us all.

When you want to contact the author with submissions, your vote, com-
plaints, idea's etc. write a message to one of the above mentioned In-
ternet addresses, call our BBS or mail us at the following address:

. . : Welcome to the thirteenth issue of pc/x-magazine.
: _:__ | Not much happened actually this month. There were a
      | . / /\ few tools released but besides that there was al-
- --- | :/ / / -- most no action concerning pc/x. I think that this
      | /___/ / | is mainly due to the upcomming release of pc/x
:__\___\/ .| v1.30. Much things are done and still need to be
/\ __ \.| done and I think that you find it interesting if I
\ \ \ \ tell you a bit more about this. The new release of
:\ \___\___\ pc/x (the archive) will be approx. 1,1 MB in size.
. \/___/___/ All the options that're added and improved can be
      | / _____/\ read later in this zine, but also from now on The-
       / __/\_\/ Tag has become a part of pc/x. Besides that pc/x
/___/\_\/: has got complete new documentations delivered to
\___\/__..| you in three different languages: English, Dutch &
/\ __ \ | German. All the other textfiles inside the archive
\ \ \ \ are also updated. Most of these last elements are
 - -- \ \_______\ done in the past month so I think that's why not
\/_______/p! much happened. The release of v1.30 is planned for
      | . : the last week of may, that gives us enough time to
      : . . | finish our product. In this issue the WhatsNew.doc
      . : for pc/x and the WhatsNew.tt for TheTag v1.20 are
. present (in the MISC-directory). Have a look at
them to see the new features of the next release.
Finally we hope that pc/x will also work okay on multi-node systems.
Improvements have been made (memory, sharing etc.) for this so we hope
that it runs faster and more stable the before. More about all this in
 the next issue.

Some other things now: - HOUlQ joined as a distribution site for pc/x-
magazine. You can find the data of his BBS at the end of this magazine
and ofcourse in "pce_tot.lst", - Creative Team has an extra email ad-
dress; from now on you can also reach us by mailing to: silvsurf@hori-
zon.nl. That makes a total of three addresses, - Since this month PC-
Express(c) has an own ftp-site; we have put all tools that're released
this year on this site for now, in a short period of time there'll be
60 MB with PC-Express(c) tools, language files, sources etc. The ad-
dress is: ftp:mindweb.com/pce, - The Swedish Support Site has made a
 WWW-site for PC-Express(c), the address is: WWW.micro.se/Bryldemedia/
 pce.htm .

// Short explanation: New things, bugs and ideas are written at ran-
dom; the name of the person who discovered it is written between

  .--------------------------------------------------------------------.
: Can it be done that the SysOp has the ability to view the LogX.txt :
  : from the "wait-for-caller screen" by means of (a) function-key(s), :
: e.g. when the SysOp presses <PgUp> a window pops up which holds a :
  : logfile. :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
  : PC-Express(c) doesn't update the wait-for-callers screen all the :
: time. Often a user that called isn't mentioned on the screen. :
: Besides that, the actions of users are sometimes also not men- :
: tioned, for example that a user (u)ploaded. The first problem is :
: the worst of these two, the last happened just a few times. :
  : :
  : (HOUlQ) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: I think that there's something wrong with the ratio-check of the :
: users. I discoverd that there was something wrong when I saw an :
: user called xxxxxxxx on my BBS. He has uploaded 12MB in 187 files :
: and has downloaded 6MB in 145 files over the last few years. His :
  : ratio is 1:3 (1 upload : 3 downloads) and his ratio-type is files+ :
: bytes. He wanted to download one 1 which was approx. 1MB in size. :
: PC-Express(c) asked if he wanted to download the flagged file and :
: Lucifuge confirmed it. Then PC-Express(c) asked for the second :
: filename (Filespec(2):). xxxxxxxx pressed <enter> and THEN PC- :
: Express(c) told him that the file exceeded his ratio's. I gave :
: him disabled ratio, de-tagged and tagged again but that didn't :
: work. I gave him security level 255 (override transfer limits) :
: but that didn't work either. He had not download anything that day :
: so his download ratio for today was okay. Finally I decided to :
: perform the download via TheTag and it worked immediatly! That is :
: why I think that the beta version of v1.30 (still) has a bug con- :
  : cerning the ratio's of the users. : :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: When a user calls for the first time, he/she CAN use the RL-com- :
: mand when the security level for ReLogOn is too high for such a :
  : user. :
  : :
  : (Caligula) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: PC-Express(c) exits to DOS with a runtime error 1E80:0122 with va- :
  : rious commands like e.g. "f". :
  : :
  : (Caligula, The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: When performing a ReLogOn, only the handle of the user disappears, :
: all the rest stays (in the statusbar); why is that? When the user :
: uses the function for which it was programmed to do, all the data :
  : should disappear. :
  : :
  : (The Doctor) :
  )--------------------------------------------------------------------(
: When using the Log function in chatmode by means of pressing SHIFT :
: +F2, start by throwing the current screen into the ChatLog.x and :
: then what the user and the SysOp types. Now the ChatLog.x starts :
: with the first things that is written after the function has been :
: activated, but capturing the current screen also maybe is a good :
  : idea. :

   f. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) //
 - -------------------------------------//- -

Q: Will PC-Express be going to support networks like Fidonet in the
     future?

A: Yes. In PC-Express v1.3 we hope that we have replaced the current
message-base with JAM-base so that besides our own network other
mail/file networks like Fidonet can be incorporated too.

Q: I see many errors occur when I start v1.20demo, for example when
PC/X asks for the handle and location/group; why is that?

A: PC-Express v1.20 works with language files. Many users say that the
language files are not incorporated in the pc/x-archive, but they
are! Take a look at the archive "pce00000.003". Inside that archive
are 4 files which form the English language. Place them in your
textpath (e.g. c:\bbs\node0). Next, take care of the fact that the
English language is correctly installed in the config.exe. When you
now start pc/x, you don't see these errors anymore.

Q: Are there any ftp-sites where we can download pc/x tools?

A: Since april 1996 there's an ftp-site where you can download almost
all the PC-Express(c) tools that're released. The ftp-address is:

     ftp:mindweb.com/pce

                      .

   What's new in PC-Express(c) v1.30 //
 - ----------------------------------//- -

 .---.---------------------------------------------------------------------.
: + : There are some computers that have not much EMS available, therefor :
: : there's an option in the Config.exe with which the SysOp can define :
: : that PC-Express(c) should first try to use XMS before it starts to :
: : use EMS when, for example, starting a door (XMS is faster). The PC- :
: : Express(c) ".ovl" file is still loaded into EMS :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : There's a new option build into the Config.exe called UploadTime- :
: : CreditIndex. With this index PC-Express(c) calculates how much time :
: : will be added to the time-account of a user after an upload. An in- :
: : dex of, for example, 150 means that when a user uploaded for 20 mi- :
 : : nutes, another 10 minutes will be added to the time-account (50%) :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : Fixed a multi-node bug with the swap-routines. PC-Express(c) used :
: : the same swap-file on all the nodes so errors occured when doors :
 : : were started :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Added an (p)rivate option when a file was uploaded so that this :
: : file will automatically be moved to the HOLD-directory and the full :
 : : File_Id.diz will be added to the Dir0.txt :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Made an option in the Config.exe with which you can set "statusbar :
: : visible on the screen" as default or not. Ofcourse the visualisa- :
: : tion of the statusbar can always be changed by means of using the :
 : : F10-key :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : The SysOp is able to go straight to the Config.exe program when PC- :
: : Express(c) is waiting for a call; there's no need to exit the BBS :
 : : anymore :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : Fixed a bug in the upload-routine; if a user entered the descrip- :
: : tion before the file was uploaded, the description was lost after :
 : : completing the upload :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : Installed a complete new "s"-command; now it holds more information :
 : : and looks more "/X-like" :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : Fixed a bug in the bulletins :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : In the Config.exe is a new option where you can enable or disable :
: : the auto-comment that a user has to send when calling your BBS :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : There is a new option in the Config.exe with which you're able to :
: : define the maximum days after which the user has to change his/her :
: : password; if the number is set to "0", the option is disabled :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : PC-Express(c) now supports voice-connects. If pc/x located a voice- :
 : : connect, it'll start a batchfile called "VoiceX.bat", where "X" is :
 : : the Node-number. With this option it's possible to start a voice- :
 : : mailbox :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : If an uploaded archive has no file_id.diz (and if you have enabled :
: : the option in the Config.exe), pc/x asks whether the description :
: : that the user writes should be incorporated as a file_id.diz into :
 : : the archive. PC-Express(c) supports the following archive-types: :
 : : ZIP/LHA/LZH/ARJ/DMS/ARC/PAK. If the user enters (y)es, pc/x calls :
: : the batchfile "Pack_Diz.bat", with which you're able to inset the :
 : : File_Id.diz into the archive. PC-Express(c) will add the beneath :
: : mentioned variables to this batchfile: :
 : : :
 : : %1 = Extension of the archive (e.g. .zip) :
 : : %2 = File_Id.diz, including path :
 : : %3 = Archive, including path :
 : : %4 = The Node-number :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : Fixed a small bug in the NoWanted.txt routine :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Added a new variable called %4 when using an external protocol; :
: : this is the upload path :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Added an option in the Config.exe program with which you can allow :
: : the same user to be on more then 1 node at the same time :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : Fixed a bug in the usereditor (week and month statistics one field :
 : : longer) :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Fixed the swap routine; now it swaps to EMS/XMS/Disk :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Added a new MCI code called @PAUSE@. If you call this MCI code pc/x :
 : : will wait for a <space> :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : Tried to fix some bugs in the Event-routine, i hope it works better :
 : : now :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : In the prior versions, when you pressed "HOME", pc/x started the :
 : : batchfile called "Terminal.bat". From now on, pc/x will execute a :
 : : batchfile called "TermX.bat", where "X" is the Node-number. In :
: : this way it's easier to create batchfiles for each node :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : During the download the SysOp can see the current file number and :
: : the total number of files in the big transfer window :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : If you uploaded a dupe, pc/x moved the file into the HOLD-directory :
: : but posted the description into the file listing of the upload di- :
: : rectory; this is solved now :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : Updated my APRO library from v2.01 to v2.03 :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : + : PC-Express(c) has a search routine to search for a string in the :
 : : message-base. With the "rs"-command (read-search) you can enable :
: : this function. You can choose whether to look in the message hea- :
: : ders, message bodies or both. PC-Express(c) wil search for the gi- :
: : ven string in all the messages that exist in this conference :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : PC-Express(c) has a new waiting screen; in this screen the current :
: : time and date are inserted and pc/x also shows how many faxes are :
 : : received :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : Small fixes and improvements at the system-detection routine :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : Fixed the time-stamp bug (only at archives pc/x sets the new date!) :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : Fixed a bug in the dupe-check routine during the upload :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
 : ! : PC-Express(c) crashed when it read the File_Id.diz of an archive :
 : : when this File_Id.diz was read-only or hidden; it's fixed now :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : When you wanted to reserve the BBS for a special user, pc/x crashed :
: : with a runtime error 103. This was a realy lame bug but it took me :
 : : hours to find it :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : Made in improvement in the message-base; now the user has the pos- :
: : sibility to send a (c)arbon (c)opy to another user. You can enable :

 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: ! : From now on pc/x only saves the filename when attaching a file to a :

 : : file-listings when attaching a file :
 )---+---------------------------------------------------------------------(
: + : We have rewritten the whole messagebase; from now on the format of :

       {-Allround PC-Express DIRX.TXT file handling.}

A small summary what the pkDIRX unit can do:

 - Reads dirx files from start to end (normal listing) or from end to
   start (reverse listing).
 - Real reverse reading together with text file positioning it makes
   this unit quite fast.
 - Searching dirx entries for keywords or filenames with wildcards.
 - Searching dirx entries on a specific date or a number of days old.
 - Jumping withing dirx files.
 - Output of an 'animation' while reading dirx files.
 - Support for CD-ROM conferences.

A small bug fix in 1.11, line changes are marked.

 MugSHot.
