LAST MINUTE UPDATE:
This README is totally out of date.
But it's 15 minutes to the deadline ...

What ?
This is the fake entry for the TheParty 9 Linux Demo Competiton.

How ?
Just create a directory and untar the contents of the distribution archive to it.
(I assume you already did this.)
Now startup your favourite XServer in 16bpp mode and a resolution of at least 320x240.
(320x240 yields the best optical results, but you can watch in any mode.)
Now simply time "./engine" and off we go.
If you experience any problems please refer to the FAQ section at the end of this document.

Why ?
Good Question.
At first this was planned as an entry for MekkaSymposium 2000.
And I wanted to skip writting something for TP9.
Yes, sure.
Sitting there and the starting 2 hours before the deadline ?
As usual ?
No way.
So I started 2 weeks earlier and spent about 20 minutes on it every day.
That gave me a 5 hour headstart. And a good reason to finalize it.

FAQ:
Q: I have a high end Pentium 166 based system with 32MB of ram and an ET4000 ISA VGA card.
But this thing still crawls like a snail.
	What can I do ?
A: There are several things you can do (except buying something decent).
Shutdown all those daemons that linger in the background and suck resources.
        Use the "-nosound" option.
Start the whole thing as root and use the "-dga" option.
Forget about all those nifty FX and use the "-slowcpu" option.
However the recommended system to run this is:
A Pentium II CPU with at least 333MHz or even better an AMD K6 based system.
                At least 32MB ram.
A decent PCI based VGA card.
                And of course a GUS.

Q: Why are you using X and DGA anyway? Why not the real k3wl stuff like GGI, PTC, ClanLib, etc ?
A: Well, when I (anti) started developing on Linux nobody even thought of these libs.
My first Unix "Demo" was developed on HP-UX.
Now I'm mostly working on PPC and Alpha based systems.
The X-Version should run on every Unix with a R6 X-Server.
So, yes, Linux software is widely usable, but Unix software is much better.

Q: I'm trying to watch your demo under solaris/aix/hp-ux/monterey/hurd/xxx,
but I can't find an executable.
A: Just go to http://webhome.nu/fake/ and check if it's there.
If not just send me an email (anti@webhome.nu) and tell me what you target system is
and I'll happily supply you with an binary for that system.
        (NO, I won't do a WinCrap port !!!)
        BTW:
As soon as everblue is in a more advanced state I'll make sure it works under OS/2.

Q: All your FX are very scrappy and old fashioned. Why do you dare to enter a compo with
	such crap ?
A: Well I'm very scrappy and old (fashioned), so what ?
	And who dares wins !
        BTW:
        I did some 3D engines.
I wrote those boring phong/alpha/bump/texture mapping poly fillers.
I wrote some hierachical object systems.
        But what's the point ?
With modern hardware it's just wasted effort.
And I must admit, I prefer a dozen of well timed "old" FX over one 3D engine,
that was downloaded somewhere and adapted a small bit mixed with some sound
and doesn't even know how to write synchronize.

Q: Was your style (if you call it style) ever famous ?
A: In fact it was. And NO I won't tell you where you've seen me in the old days.
