                            What is L-nix?
                           ͼ

L-nix is an interactive UNIX tutorial program which runs under DOS (and
MS Windows in a DOS shell). It contains the following learning modules:

	A) Introduction to UNIX
	B) Your First UNIX Session
	C) UNIX and Files
	D) File Characteristics
	E) Directories in UNIX
	F) The UNIX Man Pages
	G) Introduction to the Korn shell
	H) Korn shell Customization
	I) Basic Commands
	J) Finding Files With find
	K) Redirection and Pipes
	L) Processes and Linking
	M) Searching in Files: the grep command
	N) grep: advanced usage
	O) Some Useful Tools
	P) Some More Useful Tools
	Q) Communicating With Other Users
	R) Command Substitution and Variables
	S) Korn shell programming

At the main menu screen use the up and down cursor keys to move the menu
bar to the UNIX learning module you wish to work on. Pressing the Enter
key will open that module. Alternatively, while at the menu screen
simply press the letter corresponding to the L-nix module you wish to
use. So, pressing S at the main menu screen would take you to the
Korn shell programming module. Pressing the X or Esc key will exit the
L-nix program.

The current version of L-nix does not have mouse support.

When in a module, use the PageDown key to move to the next module screen
and the PageUp key to move to the previous screen. Pressing the Esc key
will take you back to the menu screen, unless you are currently in test
mode. If you are in test mode, ie. taking a multiple choice test,
pressing the Esc key will skip over the test.

At any point in the tutorial, you may easily switch over to a UNIX
shell simulation. To do this simply press the Alt+S key combination,
that is hold down the Alt key and while the Alt is being held down press
the S key.

In the shell, users may try out most of the commands covered in the
tutorial screens. Being merely a simulation, the shell is very limited
in what can be done there. Users can however, get a feel for the UNIX
environment by trying out commands here. To leave the shell and return
back to where you left off in the tutorial press the Alt+S key
combination again.

In many modules, after a certain amount of material has been covered in
the tutorial, a short multiple choice test can be taken. Answers are
selected by pressing the key corresponding to letter next to the answer
presumed to be correct. The testing is entirely optional, the user may
skip it at any time by pressing the Esc key.

                             ͼ

In the L-nix shell the sort command does not work correctly. When
printed to standard output, it does not execute line feeds correctly.
When the output of the command is redirected to a file the problem is no
longer present. If you have another sort command, like GNU sort, you
might try placing that command in the \lx\root\bin directory.
