                              ==============================

The FONTKAT package consists of two WordPerfect add-on
                              programs: FONTKAT and FONTMAP.

FONTKAT automates the process of creating a
catalog of fonts available to WordPerfect.

FONTMAP produces a printed keyboard map
                          for international/symbol/dingbat fonts.

                                Requires WordPerfect 8 or 7
(32-bit editions for Windows 95 or above)

      DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
      =======================

Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying it.
If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are legally required
to purchase it. With your order, you get anything from the simple right to
continue using the software to an updated program with printed manual.

Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated
below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial
authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are
good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute
the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For example,
some authors require written permission before a commercial disk vendor may
      copy their Shareware.

Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should find
software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's commercial or
Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because you
can try before you buy. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also.
Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee--if you don't use the product,
      you don't pay for it.

      Introduction
      ============

With WordPerfect and carefully chosen fonts just about anyone can create
documents which look professionally printed. Very often the challenge is to
find just the right font for the job at hand. The macros and templates in this
package will allow you to create a printed catalog of all the fonts available
to WordPerfect. With the printed catalog finding the right font will be much
      easier.

      WordPerfect 8 & 7
      -----------------

This version of FontKat was tested with the versions of WordPerfect listed
below. If you wish to run it with a NEWER version of WordPerfect, and it
doesn't run as this manual says it should, call for support--there will be
either a fix or a new release, as needed, to fix any problems caused by new
      features.

            WordPerfect 8/WIN 95

      Installation
      ------------

Installation of the files comprising the FONTKAT system is accomplished by
running the appropriate setup macro provided. If you want to install FONKAT
for use with WP 7, use SETUP7. If you intend to use FONTKAT with WP 8, use
      SETUP8.

Start WordPerfect for Windows as you normally do. From the editing screen
activate the appropriate setup macro by pressing Macro (Alt-F10), enter the
full path and filename to SETUP7.WCM or SETUP8.WCM (for example, "A:\SETUP8").
The installation program will prompt you to enter the information it needs:

            "Copy the files from:"
This is where the uninstalled files are located. The default
value is A:\. Edit the line as needed to reflect the full path to
the files (such as "D:\DOWNLOAD", for instance).

            "Copy the macros to:"
Your Main and Supplemental macro directories are shown as radio
buttons. By default your Main macro directory is selected as the
place to copy FONTKAT macro files to. If you want them placed in
your Supplemental macro directory, simply click on it.

"All other files will be copied to:"
This is where the documentation file, template files, help file,
and other related documents, will be copied to. It will be a
directory named FONTKAT created off of your WordPerfect program
directory. You cannot edit this option.

NOTE: SETUPx.WCM will NOT be copied to either of these directories so
be sure to keep a backup copy of the original FONTKAT disk.

      What Does Fontkat Do?
      ---------------------

One of the nice features of Windows based programs is the ability to work with
scalable fonts without relying upon an external third party program. For the
first time many of us were able to produce documents with class since we no
longer had to rely upon the handful of fonts built into our printers.
Acquiring additional fonts from various outlets, in a short time the number of
fonts I had available was getting into the hundreds. Soon I was asking
myself, "Which font should I use in this situation? Is this the font which
looked good on screen but terrible when printed? What does this font REALLY
      look like?"

FONTKAT is designed to create a custom catalog of your fonts. With the
printed catalog showing samples of all your fonts you will be able to quickly
and easily choose the font which is just right for the job at hand.

      Overview
      --------

In the next section I will explain in detail all options found on the various
menus. Assuming you can figure those things out for yourself, here is a quick
run down of what is necessary to produce a catalog of all your fonts.

From the opening screen of FONTKAT select those fonts you want included in
this catalog and click on NEXT. Select the style of catalog you want to create
and the point size you want to use in producing the font samples. Click on
NEXT and FONTKAT will prompt you to enter a filename to use in saving the
finished catalog. Once you've entered the filename, FONTKAT will go into
      action creating the font catalog.

When done FONTKAT will give you a brief report of the font catalog just
created. FONTKAT will leave you with the first file comprising the catalog
      displayed on screen.

Using FONTKAT should be relatively easy and self-explanatory. However, I will
proceed to explain as thoroughly as possible the workings of the program to
      avoid any problems.

Activate FONTKAT as you would any WordPerfect macro. From the main editing
screen press Macro (Alt-F10) and enter "FONTKAT". You can also click on the
"FontKat" button on the main screen of the FONTMAP program (Registered Edition
      Only).

FONTKAT goes through an initialization process which will take a few seconds.
When done, the opening dialog screen of FONTKAT will appear. The currently
active printer is listed along with the total number of fonts available and
the total number of fonts you have selected to be cataloged. The list box to
the right contains the names of all fonts available for the currently selected
printer. To select fonts to be cataloged simply click on the name of the font
in the list or use the ALL or PATTERN button (Registered Edition Only) to
select or unselect all of the list or only those fonts matching a text
pattern. Notice that the SELECT and UNSELECT radio buttons determine what
action the ALL and PATTERN buttons will take. Once you have selected the
fonts you wish to catalog, click on NEXT.

FONTKAT s second dialog screen gives you the opportunity to select what style
of catalog you wish to create and what point size to use in creating the
samples. There are six styles to choose from.

            1) You can have the font name itself to be the text to use in
illustrating the font. This is the default and what many will be
                  satisfied with.

                  Example:

                  Times New Roman

            2) You can have a short phrase followed by the font name illustrating
the font. The default setting for the short text is "This is a
sample of ". If you select this option you will be able to edit
                  this phrase if you wish.

                  Example:

This is a sample of Times New Roman

            3) You can have the font name to appear on one line and then the
alphabet, along with the other characters available from the
keyboard, indented on the next line. The font names themselves
would all be in the same initial font but the indented alphabet
beneath them would be in the actual font being illustrated.

                  Example:

                  Times New Roman
                        ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
                        1234567890-= !@#$%^&*()_+ <>?,./:;'"{}[]

            4) (Registered Edition Only) Similar to number 3 above, you can have
the font name on one line and a longer phrase indented on the next
line. If you select this option you will have the opportunity to
specify a phrase to use or select one of the more than 50 phrases
supplied. You can even have FONTKAT to randomly use all supplied
                  phrases.

                  Example:

                  Times New Roman
The Quick Brown Fox Jumps over the Lazy Dog

            5) (Registered Edition Only) The fifth option is just like number 3
above except the phrase which will be used to illustrate the font
is a sampling of multinational characters.

                  Example:

                  Times New Roman
                     Multinational: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

            6) (Registered Edition Only) Yet another option is the One-Font-Per-
Page Spec Sheet. With this option a spec sheet is created for each
font selected. If it is a scalable font, the spec sheet will show
the font in various point sizes and will briefly illustrate the
different appearance attributes on the font (such as Bold, Italic,
etc...). If it is not a scalable font, FONTKAT will seek to
illustrate the various CPI (characters-per-inch) fonts available
for that typeface. It will also show the affect of appearance
attributes on the font. Spec Sheets work great for character
fonts but are of little use with symbol or dingbat type of fonts.

      Creating the Catalog
      --------------------

Once you have selected the catalog style to create, click the NEXT button.
When you do FONTKAT will prompt you for a filename to use in saving your font
catalog. Font catalogs are complex, and are created as several documents,
broken into sections so that they can be viewed and printed easily. The name
you enter can be up to 8 letters. The individual catalog segment files will
be given the filename you enter plus "_xx.WPD", where xx is the number of the
segment file. If you used the default FONTKAT filename then there may be
FONTKAT_01.WPD, FONTKAT_02.WPD, FONTKAT_03.WPD and so on. These files are
saved in your default document directory.

A dialog box will be displayed on screen during the cataloging process showing
the progress being made. The font currently being cataloged is listed along
with two bars at the bottom showing the percent completed on the current font
      as well as all fonts.

During the cataloging process you can click on "Pause Cataloging Process" to
halt the process. You will be given three options:
            Resume Cataloging of Fonts.
Cancel Catalog, Removing All Traces of Current Run.
Cancel Catalog, Leaving Progress so Far.

When done, FONTKAT will present a short message summarizing the catalog it has
just created. The first segment file of your catalog will be on screen when
      FONTKAT ends.

      Printing Your Font Catalog
      --------------------------

To obtain your printed catalog, print the various segment files of your
catalog in order. If everything has gone as designed, you will have one
continuous font catalog ready for use.

Font Catalogs Using Multinational Character Sample
      --------------------------------------------------

One of the options you have with FONTKAT is to create a font catalog
illustrating the capabilities of selected fonts to print multinational
characters. This should be especially useful for users needing multinational
characters who are uncertain which fonts support such characters.

FONTKAT does not use the entire multinational character set but, rather, about
a dozen carefully chosen characters to give you a sample of the more commonly
      used multinational characters.
NOTE: if you know of additional characters which ought to be
included in this option, please bring them to our
                  attention.

To print your font catalog with multinational character samples make certain
you unselect "Print graphics" from the Print Dialog in WP 7. In WP 8 select
"Print text only" on the "Details" tab of the Print Dialog. Printing your
catalog in this way helps to show which fonts are missing multinational
      characters.

      What Does Fontmap Do?

International/symbol/dingbat type of fonts are difficult to use simply because
there is no easy way to know what keypress will type what character from the
font. FONTMAP is a utility to provide you with a printed keyboard map to such
      fonts.

      Detailed Instructions
      ---------------------

You activate FONTMAP as you do any macro program. From the main editing screen
press Macro (Alt-F10) and enter "FONTMAP". You can also click on the "FontMap"
button on the main screen of the FONTKAT program.

After activating FONTMAP click on NEXT or press ENTER to begin the process of
creating a map to a font.

To create a font map you only need to specify the font for which a map is
needed. Prior to displaying the Font dialog box FONTMAP will present a short
message about the font you are about to select. When you click on OK the Font
dialog will appear and you will be able to select the font. This may be an
international or symbol or dingbat font or any other type of font you want to
have a keyboard map to. Once you have made your selection click on OK to close
the Font dialog box. FONTMAP will ask for you to confirm the choice you have
made. If the information is not correct, click on BACK to return to the main
FONTMAP dialog. If the information is correct, click on FINISH to create a
keyboard font map of the selected font.

Changing the Font for Key Labels
      --------------------------------

Once a font map has been created you may change the font used for the title
and key labels. Simply move to the very top of the document and select a new
font from the Font Dialog (Format/Font or F9). The symbol font will remain
unchanged. Only the title and key labels will be affected by the new font.

When done, FONTMAP will end with your font map on the screen.

      Trouble-shooter's Guide
      =======================

At the time of release I was aware of no problems which should be listed here.
If you should experience any problems at all, please let us know. We will do
all we can to rectify the problem. If it cannot be handled by FONTKAT, then a
report of that problem will be posted in this slot, as well as on our Internet
      site at http://www.graphcat.com.
