Program description:

Cd-Book is a simple program to turn a text file into a
little CD-ROM booklet that fits neatly inside a CD case.
A printer with a paper tray is required for printing on
both sides of the paper.

Distribution:

Cd-Book is freeware and can be distributed freely.

Platform:

Windows 95, NT 4.0, NT 3.51 (SP5).

Requirements:

Requires Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0 Runtimes available
from most large archives on the internet.

Installation:

I suggest you just run this program straight from WinZip. Just
open the zip file with WinZip and double-click on cdbook.exe. If
you find yourself using this program a lot, here's how you can
install it on your system:

Windows 95 and NT 4.0:

1) Unzip the file to your hard drive.
2) Right click the Start button and select Open.
3) Right click My Computer. Locate the file using Windows Explorer.
4) Drag the file to the window you invoked in step 2.
5) This should create a shortcut to the file in your start menu.
6) Close the Window you invoked in step 2.

Run the file by using the Start menu and clicking on the
shortcut.

Windows NT 3.51:

1) Unzip the file to your hard drive.
2) Use file manager to drag the program to an existing program group.

Run the file by opening the program group and double clicking the
new icon.

Usage:

This program works well with HP printers. It has been tested with
the HP-Deskjet 660 series and Laserjet 3 and 4. It should work
with most printers that have a paper tray.

Prepare a text file with the contents of the text you wish to print
on the CD Book. Do not include page numbers- the text file should
be one contiguous file. Each line of text should not exceed 78
characters. For testing purposes, you may use this readme.txt file.
Text files bigger than 20 Kbytes will work, but usually result in a
book that is too thick to fit in a CD case.

Set up your default printer so it is ready to print with standard
size paper. Open the program. Locate the text file and click it.
Printing will begin immediately. Wait for all pages to be printed.
Follow the online instructions to print on the other sides of the
paper just printed. Note that if your paper comes out print side
down on the return feed, you may need to turn each sheet over (but
keep its order the same in the stack) despite the directions given.
Click OK to print the other sides of the paper.

Arrange the paper so that the page numbers located at the bottom
of each section line up to form a book. Page 1 should be in the
front and the last page should be the one with the highest page
number. Fold paper in half on the dotted line. Staple at the fold.
Cut excess paper out at the dotted lines and slip into a CD case.

Notes:

This is very simple program born of the need to distribute installation
instructions on CDs I authored for families and friends. I wrote this
because I could not find a program that would create these little books
anywhere, even after extensively searching the internet. This program
suites my needs, but if anyone out there would like to develop this sort
of program into a quality full-featured CD Bookmaker, please let me know
and I'll send you the source free.
