These programs SPLIT.EXE, JOIN.EXE are DOS based. The first program SPLIT splits a big file in 1.4Mb chunks and writes the result as 0.VIN, 1.VIN, 2.VIN, .... in the default folder.
You can copy the files to the individual floppies and then transfer the file. The file can be any big as there is only the limitation on the hard disk space that is available for the original file and the split files.
Then in the destination, copy the individual floppies containing the files 0.VIN, 1.VIN, 2.VIN, .... to a temporary folder. Then from that folder as the default one in the DOS prompt, type JOIN as this joins all of the files in the folder with the VIN extensions with names as numbers as given above and produces a target file as JOINED.VIN. This is the original file with only the name being different. Always remember the original filename before splitting. Hint: You can label the first floppy using the LABEL program as the file name or create a text file containing the filename in the first floppy if the name is bigger that 8:3.
This is far better method than the compression programs spanning multiple floppies because these programs (SPLIT & JOIN) help in dealing with individual floppies rather than on the continuity of the file being split. This means that if a floppy goes bad, then only that file needs to be brought in another floppy disk. The best way is to compress the big file and then the resulting compressed file must be split and transported. Actually I transfer my MPEG 3 music files this way to another place. Big software can be transported this way.
It does not automatically copy the files to the floppy disks, which is the drawback of these programs. However the Windows version is sure to handle this in the nearest future.
The program can be tailored to your needs (except changing the copyright message), like handling the 1.2Mb floppy disk, 360Kb floppy disk, 2.88Mb floppy disk etc if you have the source code to these programs. Contact my e-mail address to get the source code.
