1.1 About File Manager Toolbar
-----------------------------

FM Toolbar is an extender of File Manager for Microsoft(R)
Windows(tm) 3.1, 3.11, Windows for Workgroups(tm) 3.11,
and Windows 95/98.

FM Toolbar is an attractive alternative to the native
Windows toolbar. Fully user- customizable, it provides about
twice as many buttons, support for MS Tools, handy 'tooltips'
for novice users (a'la toolbar for Word and Excel).

     "File Manager Toolbar brings the most basic Windows element -
     the toolbar - to File Manager, giving you one-touch response to
     common tasks ... one simple answer to the problem ... nifty
     little program ... it's worth the download."

           - Computer Shopper, 11/94

FM Toolbar is a great timesaver. Statistics shows that toolbar
for File Manager is one of two main reasons why individual
users of Windows 3.1 upgrade to Windows for Workgroups (the
other reason is slightly improved performance). FM Toolbar is
an alternative, effective and inexpensive way to upgrade your
system. FM Toolbar will save you a great deal of time! With FM
Toolbar your will work with File Manager easier and faster.

Try it - You won't believe how you were able to work without FM
Toolbar.

1.2. What's new in the current version
----------------------------------

- You no longer have to pay for using FM Toolbar.
  It's "freeware" now!

- The documentation to the program has been updated.

//
// 2. INSTALLING File Manager Toolbar
//
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Unlike most other Windows applications, FM Toolbar is not a
stand-alone program; there is no special executable file you would
run to start the FM Toolbar. To use FM Toolbar, all you need is to
properly install it, and it will run automatically every time you
run File Manager.

2.1. Using Setup utility
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FM Toolbar comes with an automatic SETUP utility. Use SETUP if you
want to temporarily activate/deactivate the software or install
it onto your hard disk or network drive for permament use.
2.1.1. HOW TO QUICKLY TRY OUT THE SOFTWARE
------------------------------------------
If you obtained FM Toolbar on a diskette or CD-ROM and
want to take a look at the utility without installing it onto
your hard disk, run SETUP.EXE from the FM Toolbar directory on the
diskette or CD-ROM and choose the 'Activate' button when prompted.
  - to run SETUP.EXE, choose File | Run from main menu of Program
    Manager or File Manager and type into the 'Run' dialog box:
        A:\TOOLBAR\SETUP.EXE
    (assuming that the diskette is inserted into the 'A' floppy
    drive)
After that, run File Manager. You should see a new item in the
main menu, Toolbar (If there is no such an item, FM Toolbar has
not been activated; see information below in this file for
possible reasons.) Of course, be sure that the diskette or CD with
FM Toolbar is available during the loading of File Manager!
Now, if you see that FM Toolbar is not what you need, just run
SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Deactivate' button. Your system will
forget all about FM Toolbar!
On the other hand, if you want to give the program a longer try
and wish to install it onto your hard disk or network drive,
choose the 'Install' button when SETUP.EXE prompts you. Please see
the next section for more information.
2.1.2. Installing on a hard disk or network drive
-------------------------------------------------
If you have already copied all the files from the FM Toolbar
package onto your hard disk (for instance, you have extracted the
files from an archive), run SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Activate'
button.
If you don't have the FM Toolbar files on the hard disk, choose
'Install' button instead. Then, enter the path to the directory
where you want FM Toolbar to be installed. In this case, SETUP.EXE
will copy all the files to the new location and then activate
them. In addition, you will be prompted to create a separate
program group for FM Toolbar. It's not essential to have such a
group, but it may be convenient. In any case, the last word is
yours!
2.1.3. Uninstalling FM Toolbar
-----------------------------
To prevent File Manager from loading and using FM Toolbar, run
SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Deactivate' button. If you decide to
start using FM Toolbar later on, run SETUP.EXE and choose
'Activate'.
Otherwise, to completely remove FM Toolbar from your system,
deactivate it with the SETUP.EXE utility (see above) and remove
all the files from directory on your hard disk or network drive
where you have installed FM Toolbar. In addition, delete program
group 'FMToolbar' from the Program Manager, if your created it
during installation.
2.2. Manual installation/deinstallation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If the automatic installation fails for any reason, you may install
FM Toolbar manually as follows:

1. Create a directory for FM Toolbar on your hard disk, say
   C:\TOOLBAR, and copy all the files from the FM Toolbar
   installation disk into that directory. If you obtained the FM
   Toolbar files compressed in an archive, extract all the files
   from it.

2. Close File Manager.

3. Open file WINFILE.INI for editing (using Notepad or any other
   text editor). This file is located in the WINDOWS directory on
   your hard disk (or the directory you specified when installing
   Windows). Please note: the file you need is WINFILE.INI, *not*
   WIN.INI.

   Find the section [AddOns] in this file and enter the following
   string right after the string [AddOns]:

        FM Toolbar=C:\TOOLBAR\FMTB.DLL

   (or specify the directory you copied FM Toolbar's files into,
   if other than TOOLBAR).

   The resulting portion of the WINFILE.INI should look like
   this:

        ...
        [AddOns]
        FM Toolbar=C:\TOOLBAR\FMTB.DLL
        ...

   (... means other lines of the file). Save the file.

4. Run File Manager.

If the installation has been completed successfully, you should
see a new menu item, Toolbar, among the other items of the File
Manager's main menu. If you cannot see the Toolbar item in the
main menu of File Manager, an error has occurred. Please verify
that you have done all the steps above, and, in particular, have
specified the correct path in the [AddOns] section of the
WINFILE.INI file. Also, make sure that the files have not been
corrupted when they were copied onto your hard disk (Each file
should be the same size as each file on the installation diskette)

To manually uninstall FM Toolbar:

1. Close File Manager and remove the line 'FM Toolbar=...' from
   the WINFILE.INI file (using Notepad, for example). After that,
   when you restart File Manager, FM Toolbar will not be loaded.
   If you decide later to start using FM Toolbar again, type the
   string 'FM Toolbar=...', specifying the complete DOS path to
   the FMTB.DLL file, in the [AddOn] section of the WINFILE.INI
   file.

The following steps should be completed only if you wish to
remove the FM Toolbar from your system permanently:

2. Delete all the files from the directory on your hard disk where
   you installed FM Toolbar;

3. Delete program group 'FMToolbar' in the Program Manager window,
   if there is one.

We hope you'll change your mind!
