with Stacker present?

3.1?

1: How do I install my Western Digital EIDE CD-ROM on a system with
Stacker present?

Allow Stacker drivers to load and assign drive letter(s) to all volumes on the
system, compressed volumes or not. Once your system has booted up, install the
CD-ROM software.

2: How do I configure my Western Digital CD-ROM for MS DOS 6.x and
Stacker 3.1?

If you use MS-DOS 6.xx and Stacker 3.1, the easiest way to maintain pre-
Stacker drive letter assignments is to have Stacker start assigning drive letters at
a later point. For example, if your pre-Stacker configuration used letters C
through E, you can tell Stacker to start assigning new drive letters with drive F.

1. From a DOS prompt, type: C:\STACKER\STACKER
Note: The drive letter of the uncompressed drive is exchanged with C: (your
boot drive). In this example it is drive F: drive C: was drive C: at boot time
[F:\STACVOL.DSK =540.0MB]
2. Type: C:\STACKER\STACINI drive: where drive: is the uncompressed boot
drive letter.
3. Press to insert a new line.
4. Arrow up to the new line and type: /BD=drive where drive is after the last
drive letter you wish to preserve. For example, if you want to maintain the pre-
Stacker identity of drives C through E, use /BD=F
5. Press CTRL+Z to save the Stacker.ini file.
6. Restart your computer.

3: How do I configure the Western Digital EIDE CD-ROM for alternate
versions of Stacker or DOS?

If you're not using MS-DOS 6.xx, or Stacker 3.1, you must reconfigure the CD-
ROM to use the next drive letter after Stacker. For example, if your Stacker
configuration uses letters C through F, you can re-configure the CD-ROM as
drive G.

a. Edit your CONFIG.SYS file. The lines and sequence should be something
like this:

DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK
DEVICE=C:\STACKER\SSWAP.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK /SYNC+
DEVICE=[CDROM DRIVER COMMANDS]
LASTDRIVE=[ALL HARD + CD-ROM]

where [CDROM DRIVER COMMANDS] is your CD-ROM device driver and
switches. The CD-ROM driver line is already in your Config.sys file - just make
sure that it loads after Sswap.com as shown.

where [ALL HARD + CD-ROM] must have the last drive letter that you wish to
use. For example, if you have 2 hard drives with 2 partitions (C:\,D:\,E:\,F:\) and
you want to load a CD-ROM, set the LASTDRIVE=G

b. Type C:\STACKER\STACKER to identify the drive letters used at boot time.
For example, if STACKER shows that you are using drives C through F, then G
is the next available drive letter.

c. Edit your Autoexec.bat file. The Mscdex line has this general format:

MSCDEX /D:name /M:x /V /L:letter /E

d. Change letter to the next available drive letter. If G is the next drive letter, the
line now looks like this:

MSCDEX /D:name /M:x /V /L:G /E

Note the /L:(letter) parameter sets the drive letter. Save the file and restart your
computer.

e. Verify that the CD-ROM is active by loading a CD and checking its contents.
For example, if your CD-ROM is drive G, type dir G: from DOS, or click on the
G drive icon in Windows File Manager.

f. Re-setup any applications or programs that have to recognize the CD-ROM
drive letter automatically.
