 Setting up Netmodem/32 v2.0a2
 spectre
 the low road ][ bbs / tlr2bbs.darktech.org

 [ Starting out / Installation ]

Download Netmodem 2.0 and the file FIX.ZIP from Allen Software
Then uninstall any previous versions of Netmodem and delete any
files called NETMODEM.* from your hard drive and REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER.
Install Netmodem 2.0 and you are ready to begin.

Netmodem 2.0 requires a fossil driver, as opposed to the previous beta
release that had one built in. Netmodem 2.0 also has many more options
you can configure, which will be explained later.

 [ Setup ]

Netmodem 2.0 requires you specify the BASE ADDRESS and IRQ SETTING
for the virtual comport it creates. Default is COM5/IRQ9. First,
confirm your available IRQs by opening [CONTROL PANEL]/[SYSTEM],
then select [DEVICE MANAGER] tab and hit [PROPERTIES] button. This
will list your IRQ settings in use. Select one not in use. What you
select here can also determine what fossil drivers you can use as
well. I recommend selecting 3 or 4 if one is available. This is
because BNU cannot be used with any other settings and Ive found
BNU to run the best for my setup.

Now, exit [SYSTEM] and click the [NETMODEM] icon in your [CONTROL
PANEL]. You will see the following available options:

[SERVER] - Sets up how Netmodem 2.0 runs / log file / IRQ / caching
[OPTIONS] - Enable virtual port [NODE 1] / setup sound files
[COMPORTS] - Setup virtual port / base address / buffer / baud
[EXT FILES]- Paths to sound files [DISABLED]
[BACKUP ] - Backup config if reinstalling older version

This is my setup for each option:

As you can see, I setup Netmodem to emulate COM2 using its standard
settings [IRQ3/02F8]. When I load my BBS, I load my fossil driver [BNU]
like this in my BBS batch file:

    BNU /L1=38400 /R=4096 /T=4096 /F+ /M-

    [This loads BNU on COM2 with a 4096KB receive buffer, a 4096KB
transmit buffer, fast screen writes, and no maint screen]

Setup your BBS modem settings with a standard init string. I use
ATM0H0 for mine. Make sure you set your BBS COM to the COM you are
setting up Netmodem 2.0 to use. Set your BBS baudrate to what you use
for Netmodem 2.0 and lock the baudrate.

    My settings for PCBoard are:

[ A Few Words On Fossil Driver Setup ]

Unlike older releases, Netmodem 2.0 requires you to run an external fossil
driver to control communications. Ive tested my system extensively with
   X00 1.53a, BNU 1.70, ADF 1.40, WinFOSSIL 1.11, and WinFOSSIL 1.12; and
   these were my results:

   Client Computer: Server Computer:
   mTelnetb6 telnet client PCBoard 15.3 BBS/Netmodem2.0a2
Packard Bell 233 Pentium II MMX Packard Bell 133 Pentium
   64MB RAM 24MB RAM
   56K Winmodem 33.6 USR Sportster
   Dial-up internet connect/56000 bps Dial-up internet connect/33600 bps
   Downloading a 225k ZIP file

WinFOSSIL 1.11 [Didnt work - BBS couldnt find COMPORT/modem init errors]
WinFOSSIL 1.12 [Didnt work - BBS couldnt find COMPORT/modem init errors]
ADF 1.40 2278 cps for dl/Door games fine/ANSI display at good speed
BNU 1.70 2630 cps for dl/Door games fine/ANSI display at great speed
   X00 1.53a 1704 cps for dl/Door games fine/ANSI display at fair speed

BNU worked best for me, closely followed by ADF. X00 was fair at best, and
   WinFOSSIL didnt work at all.

When setting up your fossil driver, you should be aware of STANDARD COM
settings. These will work with all fossil drivers:

               COM Base Address IRQ
                1 03F8 4
                2 02F8 3
                3 03E8 4
                4 02E8 3

Note that COM1 and COM3 use the same IRQ, as well as COM2 and COM4. My
computer uses COM1 for my modem and I dont have another one installed,
so I had COM2 free so I could use IRQ3 without any conflicts.

If you are using NON-STANDARD COM settings [COM5/IRQ9 for example], you
cannot use BNU since it only supports standard settings. Use ADF like
   this for example:

   ADF COM5 2A0 9 57600 4096 4096 8

[You can use 57600 for locked baud rate as long as you set it to 57600
in COMPORTS. You can also see what BASE ADDRESS is available on your
system from the [MY COMPUTER]/[CONTROL PANEL]/[SYSTEM] and select
[DEVICE MANAGER] tab and [PROPERTIES] button.]

 [ Epilogue ]

Many thanks to Dedrick Allen for releasing Netmodem2.0. This ALPHA release
is more or less fully operational. Some options dont work, but file
transfers [uploading/downloading] are fine. I did find this release a bit
slower with transfer rates than using 1.0b4, but it appears alot more
stable and powerful. Its not as easy to setup, but it seems to work great
for me. All of the mentioned fossil drivers can be found at pcmicro.com.
Netmodem 2.0 can be found at ftp.allensoftware.com.

Lastly, the above settings worked best for me. I make no guarantees they
will do the same for you. You may need to mess around a little for the
best settings for your personal system.

    Thanks again, Dedrick!
