Frisk Software International - Technical note #6

                      Checksum error in SIGN.DEF

On some machines, F-PROT may refuse to work properly, and instead display
the message "Checksum error in SIGN.DEF". This message is generated whenever
the calculated checksum for SIGN.DEF does not match the expected one.

This may indicate that the SIGN.DEF file is corrupted, but frequently it
indicates one of the following hardware problems:

    1) Bad cache memory - disabling the processor cache should reveal
        if this is the case.

    2) Timing problems - increasing the wait states would reveal if this
        was the cause.

    3) Bad disk or disk controller - running the program from a RAMdisk
might reveal if this is the problem.

Anyhow, this is not a problem with F-PROT, and there is nothing we can do
about it.
