			INTRODUCTION
			------------

Winspec32 provides the functionality of an audio frequency spectrum analyser on
a multimedia computer running Windows95. It provides both time and frequency
domain displays of audio data captured by a standard sound card. It has been
written to aid in the teaching of Fourier analysis and FFTs. It is, however, a
fully functional spectrum analyser that can be used for a number or real-world
applications.

Winspec32 performs a fast Fourier transform (fft) of analogue data and displays
the results graphically. The fft is a mathematically intensive routine which
requires a fast processor (Pentium 100+) to run well. A good graphics card also
helps. The program is small and does not require a fast disc or large memory.

Note: this documentation relates to the registered version 1.1. Some of the
facilities described may not be present in older or unregistered versions

			INSTALLATION
			------------

Winspec32 requires no special installation. Simply double click on the decompressed
.exe file to run. Winspec32 makes no registry changes but does create a small
initialisation file (c:/windows/winsec32.ini) to hold registration information.
To uninstall it simply delete the winspec32.exe, winspec32.ini and this
documentation file. Shortcuts from the desktop or the taskbar can be created in the
normal manner (refer to the Windows documentation for details).

To test the installation do the following:
* Ensure that a microphone is correctly connected to the sound card.
* Run WinSpec32.
* Click on the WinSpec32 'start' button.
* The program should now display an oscilloscope style display of any signal
  picked up by the microphone.

			OPERATION
			---------
WinSpec32 has been designed with a simple, single-window interface. The most common
functions are available from the main screen.

Basic operation is controlled by the 'Display Mode' options and the 'Start/Stop'
buttons. The display mode group offers two options 'time' and 'frequency'.
Selecting the 'time' display mode and clicking on the start button will generate
an oscilloscope style display of amplitude against time. This is useful to ensure
that the input signal is not 'clipping' i.e. it is within the volume range of the
sound card. Note: the maximum, minimum and zero markings on the display correspond
to the specified levels for a standard sound card. Selecting the 'frequency'
display mode and clicking 'start' will generate a graphical display of power
against frequency (spectrum).

Try selecting either mode and whistling into the microphone to see how it works.

The other controls modify the basic functions. The 'sample window' allows you to
apply a Hamming function to the frequency display (note: it has no effect in the
Time display mode). This has the effect of placing greater significance on the
samples in the middle of a time series than those at beginning and end. For a
technical description of sample windows you should refer to a signal processing
text.

The final group of controls selects the audio sampling rate. This allows you to
select the most appropriate frequency range and spectral resolution for your
requirements. Note: the maximum frequency displayed is always one half of the
sampling rate (known as the Nyquist frequency).

If you wish to examine or process the data from a spectrum it is possible to save
the data as a comma separated variable (CSV) file. These can be imported into
most spreadsheets and databases. To do this click on the 'FILE' menu option
and the 'SAVE SPECTRUM' sub option. A standard save dialog will appear prompting
you for the location and filename.

A cursor facility is provided to allow measurements to be made. Simply use the
'up/down' to move the cursor to the required position. Alternatively, type the
desired frequency/time into the box and the cursor will move to that location.
The cursor may also be controlled using the centre wheel of an Intellimouse style
mouse.

The best way to understand the effects of these options is simply to try them.

			REGISTRATION
			------------

The demonstration copy of WinSpec32 can be registered by obtaining a valid
registration number. Once you have you registration number simply click on the
'register' button. A window will appear prompting you for the registration
number. Once you have correctly entered a valid number all functions will be
enabled and all references to the software as an 'unregistered demo' will
disappear together with the 'register' button.

Registration costs $20.00 or 10 (UK) for each single copy.

Note:
Each copy can only be used on a single machine.
Each copy will get a separate registration number.

To order
--------
Currently ordering is by online registration (via a distributor).
Check the C3 Systems website for further details.

You will receive (via E_Mail) registration numbers consistent with the number
of copies ordered.
