Scope v1.1
Copyright 1998 Jon Grieve

About
-----
Scope displays a small oscilloscope applet, showing the waveform of the current audio
source.

Installation
------------
Scope doesn't have an installation program. All that's required is the program
itself (Scope.exe) and the VB5 Runtime DLL (MSVBVM50.DLL). If the runtime file is
not present Scope will not start. The runtime file can be downloaded from my
homepage (URL below) or from WinFiles.com (http://www.winfiles.com).

Once downloaded, put the runtime file into the Windows\System directory and Scope.exe
into the directory of your choice. Then, create the usual shortcuts for your Desktop
and Start Menu.

Usage
-----
Scope will sample the audio source(s) selected in the Windows mixer. To change the
sources, open the Mixer applet (located in the system tray, next to the clock) and
select Options | Properties | Recording. Any device indicated as Selected will be
sampled by Scope. This can be CD Audio, Microphone, Line-In or any other input
device your soundcard supports.

The Scope window cannot be resized, but right-clicking the applet window will bring up
a menu that allows you to Hide the Scope window. When this option is selected, Scope
will run in the system tray (next to the clock).

Preferences allows the sampling rate to be set (in milliseconds). This produces a far
better waveform in the applet window, but degrades performance (See Known Issues).

To exit, right-click the applet window or system tray icon and select Exit. You can also
exit form the applet window by pressing Esc.

Known Issues
------------
Scope requires a fair amount of processor power to sample and draw the oscilloscope
waveform. If your PC isn't fast enough, Windows will sometimes fail to respond when
using the right-click menus. Keep trying if this happens or try using the keyboard
instead of the mouse and reduce the sampling rate in Preferences.

If - for some reason - Scope crashes the audio source will not be released and you
will probably have to restart Windows to make the audio recoding device available
again.

				** IMPORTANT **

In some installations, Scope requires updated system DLLs. This becomes apparent when
you load Scope and receive the following messages:

"The file MSVBVM50.DLL is linked to the the exported routine OLEAUT32.DLL:421 which
is not present"

To fix this, download the following file from my homepage and unzip into
your \Windows\System directory:
  http://www.southdown.co.uk/users/jgrieve/oleupd.zip (265k)

"Run-time error '453'. Can't find DLL entry point IntitCommonControlesEx in comctl32.dll"

To fix this, download the following file from my homepage and unzip into
your \Windows\System directory:
  http://www.southdown.co.uk/users/jgrieve/comctl32.zip (183k)
