TiffWorks 32-bit version
by Informatik Inc.

README.TXT file
---------------

Tiffworks creates Tiff files (and other formats) from virtually
any Windows program by simply selecting the Tiffworks 'printer'
driver.

This program requires vb40032.dll, mfc40.dll, mfc42.dll in the
Windows\System directory. If these files are missing they can
be downloaded from most software repositories or from
www.informatik.com/files.html

This is a new product. It has been thoroughly tested on our equipment.
Like any new products, wider distribution may disclose bugs or
required program changes. All supporting program and library files
are included, (except the vb40032.dll, mfc40.dll, mfc42.dll). If
the program does not work properly on your system configuration,
please let us know so that we can advise you as to any necessary
changes to the software setup and file placement. If you get a
'Cannot Get File' error with first use, try a second time. If you
get a 'Printer not supported ...' error, just ignore it and continue.
This message is sometimes displayed with the first use. If it still
does not work, somnetimes, simply restarting Windows clears the
problem.

This version runs on Windows 95. For the NT version please download
the NT4setup package (or the NT351 equivalent) from www.informatik.com/files.html
and read the readme.txt file carefully. The driver installation for
NT is somewhat involved, or contact Informatik Inc. at
email@informatik.com or call 610.640.0339.

If you run Windows 95 and do not require long file names you are better
served using the 16-bit version of Tiffworks; it runs faster. The
16-bit version can be downloaded from www.informatik.com/tiffwork.html.

warranties, disclaimer, copyright and license fees.

The system creates TIFF or DCX files from most Windows programs
by simply selecting TiffWorks as the 'Printer Driver'. The system
will prompt you to enter the Tiff file name. The extension of
the file name (.tif or .dcx) specifies the format. If the
extension is not tif or dcx (or one of the supported formats),
or if the extension is blank, then a TIFF file is created (with
a 'tif' extension added). If Serialization is selected in the
INI file, the file extension will be changed to a numeral reflecting
the page number.

Use TiffWorks 16-bit version for Windows 3x or Win95.
Use TiffWorks 32-bit version for Win95 and NT4.

For other graphics formats (e.g. bmp, gif, jpeg, gnp, pcx, eps, etc.)
please contact Informatik Inc. Multipage files are supported only
in Tiff and DCX formats.

The Tiff compression method, SingleStrip and FillOrder options can be
set in the INI file.

If you need specially formulated Tiff files for fax servers, etc.
or if you cannot read the Tiffworks-generated Tiff files, please
contact Informatik Inc. for additional setup instructions.

Graphic images are dithered monochrome; LZW compression is not
supported.

Freely distributable shareware.

INSTALLATION AND SETUP

1.  Start Windows.
2. Choose Run (from File menu of the File Manager or Start Button).
4. In the Command Line type one of the following:
    - If the software is on a diskette, type A:SETUP
       (assuming your floppy drive is A:).
    - If the extracted software is on the hard disk,
       type C:\DIRECTORY\SETUP (where DIRECTORY is
       the actual directory that holds the software
       files).
5.  Choose OK.
6. Keep the C:\tiffwk32\ directory default, or choose another
    directory, but it must be a short name (not exceeding 8 characters).
6.  Follow the prompts.
7.  Restart Windows.

Don't forget to RESTART Windows!

If the installation process encounters an 'Unable to register ...'
error, try to register the OCX file manually. Please read the
section on Windows Registry below.

For Win95 systems (not NT systems), the Setup program posts the
following entries to the WIN.INI file (assuming that the program
is located in the c:\tiffwk32 directory:

[PrinterPorts]
TiffWorks32=fmfaxdrv,TIFFWK32,1,1

[Devices]
TiffWorks32=fmfaxdrv,TIFFWK32

[FAXMAN,TIFFWK32]
Application=C:\TIFFWK32\tiffwk32.exe

[Ports]
TIFFWK32=

If the WIN.INI file gets corrupted you can refresh these entries
by running the WININI.EXE program again.

After changing the WIN.INI entries you must restart Windows.

For Windows NT, you need the 'NT4Setup' package (or NT351 equivalent).
Please download the package from the www.informatik.com/files.html.
Please read the Readme.txt file included in the downloaded package.
If you have any problems downloading the file, please contact
support@informatik.com.

WINDOWS SETTINGS

After you have installed the program review and modify the
'Printer' Settings. Proceed as follows in Windows 95
(use equivalent functions for NT):

1. Depress mouse on Start button at lower left corner of screen.
2.  Select Settings
3.  Select Printers
4. Click on (highlight) Tiffworks 'printer'.
5. From File menu, choose Properties.
6.  Click on Detail Tab
7.  Click on Setup button
8. Optionally, change Paper Size and Orientation
9.  Click on Graphics Tab
10. Set Resolution to Fine Mode (200x196 dpi)
11. Optionally, specify Dithering and Intensity.
12. Press OK buttons

DEFAULT SETTINGS

The default settings are specified in the TIFFWK32.INI file
in the application's directory (normally c:\TIFFWK32\).

The settings can be changed from the Preferences program
(INIedit.exe file in the application's directory) or by direct
editing of the INI file.

The initial settings are as follows:

[Settings]
Compression=5      (i.e. Group 4)
Singlestrip=0      (i.e. standard, multiple strips)
Serialization=0    (i.e. standard page presentation)
Defaultdir=
Filename=

Compression
-----------

	0 = No compression
	1 = LZW compression
	2 = Huffman
	3 = PackBits
	4 = Group 3 (fall-back)
	5 = Group 4 (default)

Singlestrip
-----------

	Some Tiff readers require 'Single Strip' Tiff formats.

	0 = Multiple Strips (default)
	1 = Single Strip

	You should normally leave this setting at '0'.

FillOrder
---------
FillOrder may be blank, 0 or 2

DefaultDir
----------

 	Optional initial directory for the 'Save As' dialog window.

Filename
--------

	Optional 'fixed' filename for the Tiff image. The filename
	must include the full path. If the Filename is specified
	the DefaultDir will be ignored. This setting is useful if
	you want all Tiff saved under the same name for further
	macro processing or if you want a macro to specify the
	filename. The file will always be overwritten.

Serialization
-------------

	Serialization = 0
	Serialization = 1

	If the file is longer than one page, the system automatically
	creates a multipage Tiff file. If the Serialization is set to
	'1' then separate Tiff files are created for each page with
	the page number shown in the extension name, e.g. imgfile.001,
	imgfile.002, imgfile.003, etc.

HOW TO USE

To create a Tiff file from virtually any Windows application
follow these steps:

1. Make sure that the default settings are correct. When using
    the system for the first time, run the Preferences program
    (iniedit.exe) or open the Tiffwk32.ini file and verify the settings.
    (see Default Settings above)

2. After composing your document, choose the Print function,
    normally from the File menu.

3. In the Print window specify TiffWorks as the printer. Every
    application has a different layout of the Print window. If you
    cannot find the TiffWorks 'printer' then your WIN.INI file is
    not set up correctly. See the Installation and Setup section
    above.

4. When first using the system, click on the Properties button and
    verify the Resolution, Dithering and Intensity. The resolution
    should be set to 200x196. If the properties are incorrect, set
    the defaults in the Windows Setup (see Windows Settings above).

5. Press OK and Print buttons, as appropriate.

If you get error messages, please read the Trouble Shooting Section
below.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

If the program does not work properly ....

(Somnetimes, simply restarting Windows clears the problem.

1. Make sure that you have the UNIDRV.DLL file in your
    Windows\System directory. The unidrv.dll for Win95 can be
    downloaded from www.informatik.com/files.html.

2. If you get error messages, such as 'Cannot get file name' or
    'Cannot print' or messages to that effect, try a second time.
    If problem persists please restart Windows. You may want to
    add the Tiffwk32.exe to the Startup files.

    If you get a 'Printer not supported ...' error, just ignore it
    and continue. This message is sometimes displayed with the
    first use.

3. Check the WIN.INI file for the correct entries (see above).
    You can refresh the entries by running the WININI Edit program
    (WININI.EXE). Make sure that the referred directory path names
    are correct. This section does not apply for NT systems.

4. The directory of the Tiffwk32.exe file must have a short name,
    not exceeding 8 charactes.

5. If you encounter problems with registering the OCX or DLL files
    in the Windows Registry, please read the Windows Registry section
    below.

6. The following files must be in the c:\tiffwk32\ directory
    (after moving files, RESTART Windows):

	Tiffwk32.exe
	winini.exe
	iniedit.exe
	tiffwk32.ini
	file_id.diz
	readme.txt
	license.txt

6. The following files must be in the c:\windows\system directory
    (after moving files, RESTART Windows):

        unidrv.dll
        vb40032.dll
        mfc40.dll
        mfc42.dll
        msvcrt20.dll
        msvcrt40.dll
        faxman32.exe
        faxdll32.dll
	im31fax.dil
	im31xfax.del
        im11xfax.del
        im31tif.dil
	im31xtif.del
	im31xdcx.del
        fmfaxdrv.drv
	faxocx32.ocx
        comdlg32.ocx
        imocx32.ocx
        olepro32.dll
        ven2232.olb

WINDOWS REGISTRY

If the installation process encounters an 'Unable to register ...'
error while running the Setup program, try to register the OCX file
manually. Look for a REGSVR32.EXE file in your Windows or Windows\
System directory and run the two command lines shown below (in the
Run option of the File Manager, Explorer or Start). If you cannot
find the regsvr32.exe file on your system, download it from
www.informatik.com/files.html.

Regsvr32 /u faxocx32.ocx
Regsvr32 faxocx32.ocx

(the faxocx32.ocx is just an example of a possible ocx file)

The first command line will remove any existing registry item. If
this task fails ignore it and continue with the second command. The
second command will register the file.
