A Smaller Image - Read Me First November 1998

A Smaller Image is a very simple image editor.
The intuitive visual, one-screen interface makes
it a snap to pick just the right part of a picture
to keep. Simplicity and convenience is the key.

The software works great for reducing the file size
of digital images, prior to emailing them or
publishing them on the Web. The software can also be
used for creating very small bitmaps to be used for
icons or on buttons.

The entire software application is contained on a one
screen interface. The source image is displayed on
the left side of the screen. The size of the
crop/matte area can be adjusted in small increments by
dragging the slider, clicking the +/- buttons, or by
using the arrow keys. To adjust the window size by
larger increments, click to the left or right of the
pointer in the slider bar or use the "Page Up" and
"Page Down" keys.

The output image is displayed on the right half of the
interface. By default, the output resolution is 1/2 of
the resolution of the input image. The output resolution
can be adjusted in small increments by dragging the
slider or using the arrow keys. Clicking in the slider
bar to the left or right of the pointer or using the
"Page Up" and "Page Down" keys will increase or decrease
the resolution in larger increments.

You can also change the resolution of the output image
by clicking the "Options" button and typing in a value.
If "Scale" is selected, when you type in a value for
either the width or the height, the other value will be
automatically calculated to maintain the aspect ratio of
the original image. If you would like to use an arbitrary
aspect ratio for the output image, select "Crop."

Rotation arrows, a smooth/sharpen slider, and a
darken/lighten slider round out this simple interface.
Each click of a rotation arrow will rotate the output
image by 90 degrees left or right. Dragging the
smooth/sharpen or lighten/darken slider or using the
arrow keys will adjust the values in 10% increments.
Clicking inside the smooth/sharpen or lighten/darken
slider area or using the "Page Up" and "Page Down"
keys will adjust the values in 20% increments.

Note: All sliders can be set to the minium value using
the "Home" key and the maximum value using the "End" key.

To install A Smaller Image, copy the zip or self-
extracting exe file (called asimg10.zip or asimg10.exe)
into a temporary folder or directory. Unzip and/or run
asimg10.exe, and follow the on-screen instructions to
install the program.

The program will self-extract and place all the files in
a folder called ASmallerImage. To run, double click the
file called ASmallerImage.exe in the above folder.
