The Star Trek Comics Checklist is a guide to Star Trek comics
published in the U.S. In addition to comics, you will find
references to publications with comics-related articles.

Nearly all of the licensed comics have a synopsis. The names of
writers and artists, if known, are in parentheses (writer[s];
artist[s]; cover artist[s]). My apologies to colorists and
letterers, whose names are not included. I hope to add them to a
future version of the checklist.

If a noteworthy character or event from a television episode or
movie appears in a comic, the title of the episode or film
appears in parentheses ("Where No Man Has Gone Before").

Part 9 contains a section on comics which parody Star Trek and
are intended for mature readers. Some people may be offended by
the titles of these comics.

Please send additions and corrections to Mark Martinez via email
(mlbm@ni.net) or to P.O. Box 15065, Santa Fe, NM 87506-5065.

Subject: Collecting Star Trek Comics

Star Trek comics are published under licensing agreements with
Paramount Pictures. The publication history of Star Trek comics
can be divided into distinct eras by publisher: Gold Key Comics,
Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Malibu Comics, and Marvel Comics
again. All prices mentioned are for Near Mint condition comics.

Sixty-one Gold Key comics were published from July 1967 to
February 1979. A prospective buyer should consult a current
price guide to learn what they are likely to spend for Gold Key
comics in near mint condition. Buyers should beware that prices
vary widely and some sellers overprice lower grade Gold Key
comics because they are still so popular among Trekkie/Trekker
collectors.

The early issues, particularly the first nine (which have photo
covers), are considerably more expensive ($100-$400) than later
issues. Fortunately, issues 1-38 were reprinted in four
volumes as "The Enterprise Logs". Prices for each volume range
from $5 to $25, with an average price of about $10. You may have
to hunt for them, but "The Enterprise Logs" are less stressful
on limited budgets.

The release of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" ushered in the
first Marvel era. Marvel Comics published a movie adaptation and
eighteen issues beginning in December 1979. With the exception
of the movie adaptation and first issue, which may sell for up
to $10, these comics are inexpensive, usually priced at $3 or
less. Marvel's Star Trek comics didn't sell very well and the
series was cancelled in February 1982.

DC Comics purchased the Star Trek comics franchise and began
publishing in February 1984, following the release of "Star Trek
II: The Wrath of Khan". DC's first Star Trek series produced
fifty-six issues, three annuals, two movie adaptations, a
two-issue Who's Who reference, and a six-issue mini-series
introducing Star Trek: The Next Generation to comics.

In November 1988, DC stopped publishing Star Trek comics,
revamped and renewed their licensing agreement, and began anew
in the fall of 1989 after the release of "Star Trek V: The Final
Frontier". For six years, DC published Star Trek and Star Trek:
The Next Generation comics. Each series produced eighty issues,
six annuals, several movie adaptations, mini-series, and special
issues. Two Star Trek graphic novels were also published. DC
Comics lost their license to publish Star Trek comics in
December 1995.

All of the DC issues are reasonably priced. Early issues and
annuals will be priced higher, but if you shop around, you
should be able to purchase most issues for less than $3. Recent
issues should be available at or near cover price. The first
Star Trek graphic novel, "Debt of Honor", was originally
published in hardcover at $24.95 and was reprinted in trade
paperback. DC also published and reprinted several collections
of Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation comics. The
following collections and graphic novels have been published.
Most remain in print and may be found in new and used bookstores
in addition to comic shops.

The Best of Star Trek ($19.95)
The Best of Star Trek: The Next Generation ($19.95)
Star Trek: The Ashes of Eden ($14.95)
Star Trek: Debt of Honor ($14.95)
Star Trek: Tests of Courage ($17.95)
Star Trek: The Mirror Universe Saga ($19.95)
Star Trek: The Modala Imperative ($19.95)
Star Trek: Revisitations ($19.95)
Star Trek: Who Killed Captain Kirk? ($16.95)
Star Trek: The Next Generation -- Beginnings ($19.95)
Star Trek: The Next Generation -- The Star Lost ($17.95)

In the summer of 1993, Malibu Comics acquired a license to
publish comics based on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Malibu
published thirty-two issues, two annuals, three mini-series,
including a DS9/TNG crossover, created jointly with DC, and
several special issues. Malibu brought new marketing techniques
to Star Trek comics, publishing several comics with
foil-enhanced covers, photo covers, and a hologram cover. Most
Malibu issues can still be purchased at cover price. The
enhanced issues vary in price, ranging from $10 to $30 and are
probably of interest only to completists.

Marvel re-entered the Star Trek universe via the back door by
acquiring Malibu Comics in November 1994. In 1995, Star Trek:
Voyager comics, based on Paramount's fourth Star Trek televison
series, were scheduled to join Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in
Malibu's line-up, but never materialized. Malibu lost their
license to publish Star Trek comics in December 1995.

Marvel Comics and Paramount Pictures launched a line of Star Trek
comics in Fall 1996, the 30th anniversary of the original
series. Marvel was given permission to introduce new
series, new characters, and new story lines. The Paramount
Comics imprint will also be used for other Paramount film and
television properties.
