                      SECTION I
                    About the QMS

The QMS is available in as a regular message by message mailing
list or in DIGEST mode. The digests include all the messages that
come across the list, just stored into a digest form and sent out
all at once.

Posts are automatically forwarded from the address qms@rt66.com,
however you MUST mail from the address you are subscribed from or
by an alias that I can set if your outgoing mail comes from a
different address.

When using the QMS posting, using your mailer's reply function will _not_
send your response to all of QMS. It will send your response either to
the person originating the message or to me depending on your system.
You must either use a group reply function, a CC: function, or just mail
the reply to QMS instead of replying.

Kathy Madison, former QMS empress currently has old QMS digests from
the last few years, and older ones are also available. Retreival
for digests will probably change in the near future, so I will make
an announcement on the list and change this file at the same time.
Paul Roberts has taken over the rest of the archives including interviews,
previous poll results, discographies, etc. See the section on archives
for instructions on how to retrieve information.

                        SECTION II
                Frequently Asked Questions

 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Part I: General Questions

WHO HAVE BEEN ALL THE MEMBERS OF QUEEN?
Queen has only had four members since they began their recording career:
Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, backing vocals),
Roger Taylor (drums, backing vocals), and John Deacon (bass). They also
all play keyboards on their albums in the 80s (no synthesizers were used
in the 70s). In addition to their primary instruments, all four have
played additional various instruments on some songs.

In the very early days, Queen went through 3 bass players (one of them
only for one show) before John Deacon joined them in late February of
1971. (Queen had first performed live on June 27, 1970.)

During the 1980's there were also several keyboard players who accompanied
them on their tours.

WHERE CAN I GET A DISCOGRAPHY OF ALL QUEEN'S ALBUMS AND SINGLES?
Discographies are located in the archives and on Mark Dobie's WWW page.
Mark has been doing a great job of keeping them up to date. Included
are discographies of Queen's albums and singles and videos; Brian's,
Roger's and Freddie's solo efforts and a few other things. The addresses
for web pages are in Section V. Mark always appreciates additions to
his discographies.

WHERE CAN I GET LYRICS FOR ALL QUEEN'S ALBUMS AND SOLO EFFORTS?
There are several places. The preferred methods of getting the lyrics
are from the cs.uwp.edu ftp site or from the WWW. Andy Young has lyrics
on his web page. (See Section V for addresses.) If you don't have ftp
or www access, you can also get them from Fred McConnell by mailing a
request to him at the following address: fredmc@gwis2.circ.gwu.edu
(Fred's lyrics aren't automated, so it would be nice if you sent him a
short note rather than just a list!) Please don't use the e-mail method
unless absolutely necessary.

WHAT WILL I HEAR IF I PLAY 'ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST' BACKWARDS?
WHAT ABOUT 'OGRE BATTLE'?
Probably whatever you want to hear. It has been rumored that this song
says 'Its fun to smoke marijuana' when played backwards. After much
discussion, the QMS decided that there was absolutely no truth to this.
Several people also tried recording the words "another one bites the
dust" themselves and then playing them backwards. They decided that those
words just coincidentally sound vaguely like that particular phrase.

The beginning of 'Ogre Battle' is actually the same as the end of the
song, but played backwards. There are a number of songs where backwards
bits are used (A Kind of Magic, Headlong), but those places are very
obvious and not attempts to hide subliminal messages.

HOW CAN I JOIN THE OFFICIAL INTERNATIONAL QUEEN FAN CLUB (OIQFC)?
Send to Jacky Smith, The Official International Queen Fan Club, The Old
Bakehouse, 16A Barnes High Street, London SW13, UK. She will send you a
membership form. Membership costs about $28 U.S. or 14 Pounds Sterling.
You can purchase Queen paraphernalia, such as shirts, posters, etc, through
the club.

Do not use the Pembridge Rd address found in the CD liner notes anymore!
This is the old address.

WHAT IS ROYAL VISION? AND HOW CAN I JOIN IT?
Royal Vision is the North American fan club, which is approved by the
OIQFC. Currently the fan club is in limbo, and may not start back up.
I will change this information as I hear more information.

Similarly, do not use the "American Support Team" address found in the
liner notes of some US released albums. It is old as well.

IS "SHEER HEART ATTACK" THAT IS LISTED IN THE AT THE BBC ALBUM A FAN
CLUB?

No! They are a (very good!) Queen cover band that is based in the Los
Angeles area. They have helped Hollywood Records with the promotion
of albums, which is why they are listed in the album. The only thing
they send out is announcements of their shows, when possible, and their
24 hr hotline phone number. Please, if you write to them, include a
*stamped*, self-addressed envelope. They aren't a fan club, and it is
expensive to respond to all the requests for information that they get.

WHERE CAN I GET RARE ITEMS, SUCH AS BOOTLEGS (audio or video) AND
INTERVIEW MATERIAL, OR STUFF I CAN'T FIND IN MY LOCAL STORES?

One good place is in record collecting magazines such as Record Collector
(Europe) or Goldmine (US). There are many advertisements in them. As
with anything else, some prices are better than others. Record shows are
another good place to find items. You may also post to the QMS requesting
any such material you want, and if you have any items to trade, you can
trade with a fellow QMSer. There is also a list of dealers that some people
on QMS have dealt with before in archives. Remember that just because
this is an e-mail list, you should still take normal precautions when
trading.

WHAT IS SMILE?
Smile was the band that Brian May and Roger Taylor were in before Queen.
They were joined by Tim Staffell on bass and lead vocals. They released
one single with the tracks "Earth" and "Step On Me"(in the US only), and
a Japanese mini-album called "Gettin' Smile" appeared in 1982 which had
both sides of the single and 4 studio demos.

There are records around of another band called Smile that was around much
later. If the recording is not one of the two mentioned above, it's the
wrong band!

I'VE SEEN VARIOUS "PICTURE DISCS" ADVERTISED FOR SALE. WHAT ARE THEY?

A picture disc is a vinyl record with a picture in it. Instead of being a
plain black record, the record has a picture on it. There is usually a
picture on both sides of a core layer, and then this is sandwiched in
between the clear vinyl (or similar material) layers on which the grooves
are pressed. Most of the time people keep these unplayed as collector's
items. The sound quality usually isn't as good as a normal record, anyway.
Be aware that many of the picture discs are being bootlegged now, so be
sure what you're getting before you buy.

Part II: Questions about Band Members

WHAT ARE THE BAND MEMBER'S BIRTH DATES?
Freddie Mercury -- September 5th, 1946 (Farookh Bulsara)
Brian May -- July 19th, 1947 (Brian Harold May)
Roger Taylor -- July 26th, 1949 (Roger Meddows Taylor)
John Deacon -- August 19th, 1951 (John Richard Deacon)

WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT BRIAN'S GUITAR?

Brian and his father built his guitar, "The Red Special" starting the
work in August 1963 when Brian was 16. The neck is made from mahogany
from an old fireplace, the body mostly from oak, and the tremolo
assembly included a knife edge and two motorbike valve springs. The
fret-markers are made from old pearl buttons.

WHAT IS THE LIGHT-COLORED "RED SPECIAL" SEEN IN TWO VIDEOS?

In the We Will Rock You and Spread Your wings video, you see a light
colored version of Brian's guitar. It was a 'duplicate' guitar made
for Brian by John Birch. Brian was never very satisfied with the
sound of the guitar, though. One night, in an uncharacteristic move,
he got frustrated with it and flung it off the back of the stage and
broke it.

WHAT DOES BRIAN MAY USE AS A GUITAR PICK?
An Old English sixpence coin with a ridged edge. These coins have not
been in circulation since the early 70s. A few years ago, Brian got
the Royal Mint to make up coins with his likeness on them for use as
picks. The coins were sold on Brian's "Back to the Light" tour and
through Adrian Hopkins, the merchandise company that works with the
Official International Queen Fan Club, but they sold out of them in
mid 1994.

WHAT WAS THE EXACT DATE THAT FREDDIE MERCURY DIED? HOW LONG DID FREDDIE
KNOW HE HAD AIDS?
November 24th, 1991. (approximately 7:00pm London time) No one knows
exactly how long Freddie knew he had the AIDS virus since he didn't tell
anyone for a long time, and didn't make a public announcement until the
day before he died. Some people have estimated about five years.

IS THE BRIAN MAY WHO DOES FILM SCORES OUR BRIAN MAY?
No! This is a Brian May from Australia. The only soundtracks our Brian
has done are the ones Queen has done, and music for Shakespeare's play
Macbeth done by the Red and Gold Theatre Company in London, but this
music is not commercially available. Two specific ones that come up
frequently are the soundtrack for "Road Warriors" and for "Nightmare on
Elm Street (Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare)"--these are absolutely
*not* our Brian!

Not quite film scores, but "our" Brian has done music for the UK
Spiderman radio series. This music was performed and released under the
pseudonym "MC Spy-D and Friends". Brian also did music for the "Rise of
the Robots" computer game. Because of Brian's record label, however, not
as much of Brian's music was used as was originally intended.

DOES JOHN DEACON SING ON SOME OF THE SONGS?

Despite the fact that a few videos show John singing, John maintains that
he did not sing on any of the songs because he says he has a terrible
voice and can't sing. The videos were done that way just for effect. In
some concerts, he can also be seen singing into a microphone. Nothing
specific has been said about this, but since John says he didn't sing,
perhaps the microphones were not turned on or he wasn't really singing.

WHAT ARE THEIR HEIGHTS?

Freddie: 5' 9" (175.2 cm)
Roger: 5' 10.5" (179.1 cm)
John: 5' 11" (180.3 cm)
Brian: 6' 1.5" (186.7 cm)

(Metric approximations using 1 inch = 2.54 cm )

Part III: Questions on CDs/Albums

WHY ON THE ALBUM _QUEEN_ IS JOHN DEACON'S NAME LISTED AS DEACON JOHN?
When the first album was being worked on Roger and Freddie decided that
it sounded much more interesting to switch John's name around. Being new
to the group, John didn't feel comfortable protesting much, so it went on
as Deacon John. By the second album, he put his foot down and went back
to being John Deacon.

WHERE CAN I FIND TRACK LISTINGS FOR PARTICULAR ALBUMS?
Album track listing are available in the album discography, available
from Mark Dobie's web page and the archives.

ARE THERE TWO DIFFERENT CLASSIC QUEEN CDS OUT?
Yes, in 1989 Capitol Records (Queen's 2nd US record company, from 1984-
1989) released a promo only CD with 12 of their greatest hits from the 70s
along with two versions of "I Want It All". This is different than the
1992 Hollywood compilation that was officially released. The Capitol
promo CD is considered a collectible.

WHAT ARE THE HOLLYWOOD REMASTERING ERRORS?
Older versions of the Hollywood CD releases of Sheer Heart Attack,
News Of The World, and The Miracle. "It's Late" on NotW is missing the
first 4-5 seconds. On The Miracle, a chorus line on "I Want It All" has
been edited out, plus extra vocals have been added. On Sheer Heart Attack,
one of the (many) screams at the beginning of "In The Lap of the Gods" were
just cut out. NotW has definitely been fixed, and the others supposedly have
been. If anyone knows for sure that Sheer Heart Attack or The Miracle have
been corrected (on Hollywood label CDs!) please e-mail me and let me know.

ARE MY OLD EMI RELEASES WORTH ANYTHING?
No, not more than any other used CD. EMI has issued remasters of the
Queen's entire catalog, which correct the previous tracking errors and
probably have better sound quality. Jacky Smith from the Queen
International Fan Club said in one of the club magazines that if you
already owned the first ones, it was not really worth your while to
purchase the new ones. The errors that were fixed were mostly to correct
track markings on the CDs and such. (The music was all there, but the
track separations that CD players use were in the wrong places.)

WHERE CAN I GET THE SOUNDTRACK TO HIGHLANDER?
There is no official soundtrack to Highlander, but the majority of the
album "A Kind Of Magic" consists of versions of songs from the movie.
There are abundant rumors of a few 'test pressings' of the soundtrack,
but word of these is always second or third hand. There is absolutely
*no* evidence that such a thing exists. (There is a "soundtrack" that has
orchestral music from the movies, but it doesn't have Queen's music.
It's called "Highlander, the Original Scores".)

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "AT THE BEEB" and "AT THE BBC"?
The albums are the same. "At the Beeb" was released in Europe, and
a few years later when Hollywood Records released the album in North
America, they didn't think that people would know that "Beeb" was
slang for the BBC, so they changed the name. The cover artwork is
different, and "At the BBC" comes with a fold-out poster, but the
music is identical.

WHERE IS THE PICTURE ON THE COVER OF MADE IN HEAVEN TAKEN?

It was taken at Lake Geneva in Montreux, Switzerland. There are two
different cover photos -- one on the Vinyl and one on the CD/Cassette
releases. The sunrise photo was used on the CD booklet and Cassette,
while a sunset photo was used on the vinyl release. If you will be
in the area and want a description of how to find the area, write to
Ina Reichel at (Ina.Reichel@cern.ch). You really can't get very
close to that particular place.

IS IT TRUE THAT THE PICTURE OF FREDDIE IS A STATUE? WHERE IS IT?

Yes, it is a picture of a statue of Freddie. It is the miniature of the
statue which was commissioned to commemorate Freddie, and the picture
was taken in the sculptor's garden and combined with the photo from
the lake. The full-size statue is located in Montreux, Switzerland.
It was unveiled in November of 1996.

WHICH SONGS ON MADE IN HEAVEN ARE NEW AND WHICH WERE REWORKED?
IS IT TRUE THERE ARE 13 TRACKS EVEN THOUGH THE COVER SAYS 11?

The track listing is as follows, songs not indicated otherwise are new:

1) It's A Beautiful Day
2) Made In Heaven (Queen version of the Freddie solo song)
3) Let Me Live
4) Mother Love
5) My Life Has Been Saved (Re-worked version of Queen b-side)
6) I Was Born To Love You (Queen version of Freddie solo song)
7) Heaven For Everyone (Queen version of The Cross song)
8) Too Much Love Will Kill You (Queen version of Brian's solo song w/
Freddie on vocals)
9) You Don't Fool Me
10) A Winter's Tale
11) It's A Beautiful Day (reprise)
12) (hidden track) Unnamed (only a few seconds long.)
13) (hidden track) Unnamed (CD only)

The songs that are "re-worked" versions have Freddie's original vocals
*not* vocals that were recorded after Innuendo. (Many magazine reviews
have gotten this wrong). For these tracks, the old vocals were used,
but Brian, Roger, and John did completely new instrumental tracks.

IS "In Nuce" A BOOTLEG? WHAT DOES THE TITLE MEAN?

Yes. It is a bootleg (reportedly with very poor sound quality
and lots of pops and hisses.) Pekka Yliluoma supplies the information
that it is a Latin term meaning "in a nutshell".

WHAT ARE THE LYRICS TO GOD SAVE THE QUEEN?

The song has many verses, but the first verse is the one most
commonly heard:

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen.
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.

Part IV: Questions On Individual Songs/Singles

WHAT ARE THE B-SIDES AND UNRELEASED SONGS THAT QUEEN HAVE DONE? WHICH
ONES ARE AVAILABLE ON CD?

Here is a list of all the b-side songs that did not appear as songs

the original vinyl singles if not noted otherwise. For 5" CD singles
the UK singles are usually the same as European and Japanese releases.
See discography for details.

15) "Rock in Rio Blues" (b-side to "A Winter's Tale UK/Europe; b-side
to Queen's "Too Much Love Will Kill You" North America)
Available on CD and cassingle only.

IS NEW YORK, NEW YORK AVAILABLE ON ALBUM?
No, the only place it can be heard is in the Highlander movie. There
are bootlegs that claim to have the whole song, but they don't -- they
just have the part that is in the movie, including bits of dialog.
In the Winter 1995 fan club magazine, Brian seems to say that a full
version does not exist. (This agrees with a statement made by Spike
Edney at the 1995 OIQFC convention.)

WHAT IS BEING SAID AT THE BEGINNING OF "ONE VISION"? WHAT DOES FREDDIE
SAY AT THE END OF THIS SONG? IT SOUNDS LIKE "FRIED CHICKEN" BUT THE
LYRICS SAY "ONE VISION"!
"God works in mysterious ways... Mysterious ways" is what is said at
the beginning in the deep voice. The first part is Freddie, and the
second "Mysterious ways" is Brian. Yes, typical Queen tongue-in-cheek
humor, Freddie says "Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie Fried Chicken" at the end
of the song.

WHAT ARE THE WORDS AT THE END OF "DROWSE" AS THE VOCALS TRAIL OFF?
The Summer '84 Fan Club magazine ran the words as told by Roger:

"Think I'll have my eggs poached for breakfast again
I'd like to be Clint Eastwood
Jimi Hendrix, he was great
Let's try William The Conqueror
Now who else do I like?"

A lot of people are not sure that this is quite right, though!

WHAT IS "BLURRED VISION", THE B-SIDE OF "ONE VISION", LIKE? IS IT
ALTERNATE LYRICS AS SEEN IN THE MAKING OF "ONE VISION" FROM "THE MAGIC
YEARS" VIDEOTAPE?
No, "Blurred Vision" does not have any different lyrics. The song is made
up of bits of One Vision remixed together. It is mostly made up of the
rhythm parts of the song, and doesn't really include lyrics, as such.

WHAT IS THE SONG "'39" ABOUT?
"'39" is a sort of science-fiction song dealing with the problems of
relativistic space travel. It is about a man who goes off into space
for a hundred years Earth time, but only ages a year. So, when he comes
back to Earth and goes home, he returns home to his child (or grandchild),
not his wife. On an emotional level, it is a sad love song. Brian has
also said that on another level, the song is about emotional journeys. As
As an interesting side-note, '39 is the 39th Queen song counting in order
from the beginning of their first album up through this song on the fourth.
(This is on the original albums, not later ones with bonus tracks.)

ON SOME SONGS, LEAD VOCALS ARE SUNG BY BRIAN OR ROGER. WHICH SONGS
ARE THEY?

Brian May sang the following:

Some Day One Day
She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes)
'39
Good Company
Long Away
All Dead, All Dead
Sleeping on the Sidewalk
Leaving Home Ain't Easy
Flash (One Verse)
Sail Away Sweet Sister (One or two lines near the end by Freddie)
Who Wants to Live Forever (first verse)
I Want it All (last verse, before solo)
Lost Opportunity (b-side to "I'm Going Slightly Mad")
Let Me Live (Last verse)
Mother Love (Last verse)

Roger Taylor sang the following:

Modern Times Rock 'n' Roll
Loser In the End
Tenement Funster
I'm in Love With My Car
Drowse
Fight From the Inside
Fun It
More of that Jazz
Rock It (Prime Jive) -(Freddie sings the first part)
A Human Body (b-side to Play the Game)
Hijack My Heart (b-side to Breakthru)
Let Me Live (second verse and bridge)
Doin' Alright on "At the Beeb" (last short verse)
(He did *not* sing it on "Queen")

WHY DON'T LATER QUEEN ALBUMS HAVE SONGWRITING CREDITS?
Beginning with _The Miracle_, Queen decided to credit future song writing
to the group as a whole. They decided to do that to cut down on internal
quibbling and to help bring each member into the development process for
all the songs. They said that before, although they all worked on all
the songs, that it was very easy to want to spend the most effort on
"their own" songs, and less on the other's.

Song credits on _Made in Heaven_ were slightly different. Tracks with
previously credited vocals retained their original credits, and all
of the new songs were credited to "Queen" with the exception of "Mother
Love" which is credited to May/Mercury.

Elisabeth Riba, a former QMS member has compiled a list of the tracks
on The Miracle and Innuendo along with verifiable quotes indicating which
member came up with the original idea for some of the songs. Along with
this, the RV fan club has confirmed a bunch of the songs through
interviews and through the OIQFC. Lis's original file is available in
archives, and an updated one using both sets of information will be
available on my (Sheri's) web page shortly. Due to the question being
asked so many times here is a brief listing with no details. For details,
check the archives and web pages. Remember, they did work together on
these songs--these "credits" indicate who did the majority of the lyrics.
(Also, if you disagree, I did not write this list, I am just passing it on.)

Party--all four (-Rog?)
Kashoggi's Ship--(one source says all, another Freddie)
The Miracle--all,
I Want it All, Scandal--Brian
Invisible Man, Breakthru, Rain Must Fall--Roger
My Baby Does Me -- John and Freddie
Innuendo--Roger (most of lyrics), but all four put a lot into it
Slightly Mad--Freddie
All God's People--Freddie and Mike Moran
Headlong, Hitman, I Can't Live With You, Bijou--Brian
Days of Our Lives, Ride the Wild Wind -- Roger
The Show Must Go On -- Brian

DID METALLICA COVER STONE COLD CRAZY? AND WHAT OTHER BANDS HAVE COVERED
QUEENS SONGS?
Yes, it is available on the "Enter Sandman" single and on the Electra
Compilation album "Rubiyiat". Also, Weird Al Yankovic did a version
of "Another One Bites The Dust" entitled "Another One Rides The Bus"
years ago, and more recently did "Bohemian Polka." The list of cover
versions is still expanding, with covers having been done by quite a
few bands, some of them fairly obscure. A fairly complete list of
cover versions is available in the archives. (If you would like others
added to the list, please mail the information to me at unicorn@rt66.com
and I will make sure it gets added.)

WHO IS 'DEATH ON TWO LEGS' DEDICATED TO? AND WHAT'S BLEEPED OUT IN
FREDDIE'S INTRO TO THE SONG ON _LIVE KILLERS_?
The song is most likely about one of Queen's ex-managers, Norman Sheffield.
He cheated them out of a lot of money on royalties to their first few
albums. The break with him was not an amicable one, to say the least.
According to _As it Began_, when he heard the song, he assumed the song was
about him and threatened to sue both Queen and EMI.

In the album _Live Killers_ when Freddie dedicates this song, the words
are bleeped out. They do NOT name the person. The phrase that is bleeped
out is "This is dedicated to a real mother f***** of a gentleman".

WHAT IS BEING SAID AT THE END OF "DANCER"?

The bit at the end of "Dancer" that is difficult to figure out is
actually in German. It's a recorded wake-up call from the Munich
Hilton. People have reported hearing two slightly different things:
"Guten Morgen, sie wuenschten geweckt zu werden." or "Guten Abend, ..."
The translation is "Good Morning, you wish to be woken up." or
"Good Evening, ..." (Thanks to Thomas Staudt, Jim Willis and whoever
the other person was-- I lost your message!)

WHAT DO THE WORDS TO MUSTAPHA SAY AND MEAN?
Mark Lamki, a QMS member, transcribed as much of the lyrics as he could.
That information is stored in archives in the file LYR_mustapha .

WHO IS THE WOMAN IN THE "BREAKTHRU" VIDEO?
It is model Debbie Leng who is Roger's girlfriend and mother of his
two youngest children. She used to be featured in Cadbury Flake
commercials in the UK.

WHEN WAS "MAD THE SWINE" MADE?
"Mad The Swine" is the b-side to "Headlong" in the UK, and was also
a bonus song on the Hollywood re-issue of Queen I. This was made in
1973 written by Freddie. It was originally supposed to be on Queen I,
but the band didn't like the way Roy Thomas Baker mixed it. Neither
the band nor Roy would change their minds, so Queen chose to leave it
off their album. There were a few mixing changes made before it was
released with Headlong.

WHAT SOLO RECORDINGS HAVE THE BAND MEMBERS DONE?
There is a complete discography for each band member stored in the archives.
There is also a list of other items that Queen members have collaborated on
with other artists.

Part V: Questions On Videotapes/Movies

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO US VERSIONS OF THE "WE WILL ROCK
YOU" VIDEOTAPE?
When "We Will Rock You" was first released back in 1984, the US version
was only 60 minutes long and the UK version was 90 minutes long. In
1992 the full 90 minute version was released in the US by a different
company. The US LaserDisc is only 60 minutes long, but there is a Japanese
LaserDisc release of the full 90 minutes.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE "QUEEN PHENOMENON" AND "CHAMPIONS OF
THE WORLD" VIDEOS?
The Queen Phenomenon is a one hour documentary video that was shown
on Television world-wide, while the Champions of the World video is a
two hour documentary available for home purchase. Most of the footage
in the Phenomenon video is in the Champions video, but there *is* some
material that is not duplicated. Both videos contain part of Freddie's
last interview, and comments from Brian and Roger about the band's last
recording sessions prior to Freddie's death.

Queen Productions have said that Champions of the World is taking the
place of Magic Years 4.

WHERE CAN I GET VIDEOS NOT RELEASED IN THE US AND OTHER RARE VIDEOS?
Try Goldmine, or requesting on the QMS. Many of the videos that are not
released in the US are released in the same video format (NTSC) in Japan.
Make sure you get the proper video format...

WILL VIDEO TAPES FROM OTHER COUNTRIES WORK IN MY VCR? LASER DISCS?
When purchasing video tapes, it's important to make sure that they are
the proper format for your country. "VHS" is the size of the tape, not
the format it was recorded in! There are three video standards PAL,
NTSC, and SECAM. The United States, Canada and Japan use NTSC. The
United Kingdom, Germany, and some other European countries use PAL.
The videos released in the UK are not compatible with the US system and
vice-versa--they will not play. It is possible to have tapes converted,
but it is not inexpensive.

Contrary to what many people seem to think, laser discs recorded in a
different standard will not work, either!

WHAT IS THE MAGIC YEARS SPECIAL ON VH-1?
VH-1 runs this Queen documentary from time to time. It is an edited
version of the 3 hour "Magic Years" trilogy of videos.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE US & EUROPEAN VERSIONS OF HIGHLANDER?
DID QUEEN DO ANY SONGS HIGHLANDER II?
The European version of Highlander has several extra scenes. The most
important scene is set in the WWII era and features Connor and Rachel (his
secretary). A Nazi shoots Connor and she discovers that he is immortal.
There are no new Queen songs in Highlander II, they just use "Who Wants To
Live Forever" and "A Kind Of Magic" from the first Highlander movie. The
full version was recently released on video in the US as the "Director's
cut."

A detailed description of the differences is available in archives in the
file INFO_highlander.

WHERE CAN I GET THE SOUNDTRACK TO HIGHLANDER?
There is no official soundtrack to Highlander, but the majority of the
album "A Kind Of Magic" consists of versions of songs from the movie.

WHAT MOVIES HAVE QUEEN DONE THE SOUNDTRACK FOR?
Flash Gordon and Highlander are the only movies in which Queen has had a
part in the soundtrack. However, many individual Queen songs have appeared
in movies (ie, One Vision in Iron Eagle, We Are The Champions in Revenge of
The Nerds, etc. etc.). A file in archives called ART_rc.video lists many
of the movies containing Queen songs.

WHY DO MOST PEOPLE DISLIKE THE BOOK "MERCURY AND ME" BY JIM HUTTON?
There are many reasons. First of all, Freddie was a very private person
who didn't like his private life to be made public. Jim acknowledges this,
yet goes ahead and bares the most intimate details of Freddie's illness
and dying days in his book. We do not feel that someone who really loved
Freddie would have violated his privacy and trust, and stripped his
dignity in the manner in which Jim did. Secondly, some of the facts in
his book are false. The whole story of how he met Freddie is completely
false. His portrayal of Mary is inaccurate and Jim's book is the *only*
account of Freddie's death that places Jim at Freddie's side instead of
Dave Clark, Freddie's longtime friend.

Freddie's family, Queen, and Queen's management also dislike the book --
to the point that they are taking action to prevent the inclusion of
any Queen music in the movie that Jim is trying to have made for British
television.

Part VI: Solo Projects

WHO IS THE CROSS?
The Cross was Roger Taylor's side band. Formed in 1987, they released
three albums before the officially broke up in 1992. (They did perform
one more live gig after they broke up.) The albums were _Shove It_,
_Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know_, and _Blue Rock_. The members were:
Roger, Josh Macrae, Peter Noone, Spike Edney, and Clayton Moss.

WHO IS THE BRIAN MAY BAND?
The Brian May Band is the band Brian formed to take on tour to support
his solo album _Back to the Light_. It consists of Brian, Cozy Powell,
Spike Edney, Neil Murray, and Jamie Moses.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE UK AND US VERSIONS OF "SHOVE IT"?
The US and UK versions of _Shove It_, The Cross' first album, are
different. The UK version has Freddie singing lead vocals on "Heaven
For Everyone" and has the "2nd Shelf Mix" of "Shove It". The US version
has Roger singing lead vocals on "Heaven For Everyone" (the same as the
single version in Europe) and an extra song, "Feel The Force". The
US version is the harder to hard to find.

I'VE SEEN NEW CD'S OF ROGER'S AND THE CROSS'S MUSIC--DID THEY
RE-RELEASE OLD ALBUMS?

Yes, and no. Roger did just release "Fun in Space" and "Strange
Frontier" on CD in May of 1996 in England. But there is also a CD
that is floating around now that has both albums on one CD is a pirated
version. It reportedly has poor sound quality and has cut parts of
songs. The best advice is to get the two official re-releases.
The Cross albums have *not* been rereleased. There is a pirate version
out that combines The Cross's albums "Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know"
and "Blue Rock". Again, songs have reportedly been shortened drastically
to fit both albums on a single CD. Someone on QMS reported that nearly
15 minutes were trimmed from the two albums, including two complete songs
and 6:42 cumulatively from other songs. Find the real ones if you can.

ARE THERE ANY LIVE ALBUMS FROM ROGER'S OR BRIAN'S SOLO TOURS?
There are no officially released live albums from Roger's or The Cross's
tours. There was one cassette of a Cross gig that could be purchased
through the fan club years ago, but it is long gone.

There is a live album and accompanying video release from Brian's "Back
to the Light" tour, called "Live at the Brixton Academy". It was
released in Europe and Japan.

WHERE CAN I GET AN NTSC COPY OF THE BRIXTON ACADEMY VIDEO IN NORTH AMERICA?
Since it was released in Japan, you can get the Japanese import of the
video tape or laser disc. Both have been seen frequently in Goldmine
magazine advertisements.

ON BRIAN'S _LIVE AT BRIXTON ACADEMY_ ALBUM, IT SAYS THAT ONE SONG WAS LOST
"FOR COPYRIGHT" REASONS. WHAT SONG WAS IT?

It was a version of "God" (The Dream is Over) by John Lennon, which is about
how he doesn't believe in the Beatles anymore, and his feelings about the
end of the Beatles. Brian completely re-wrote the lyrics to talk about
his feelings about the end of Queen, and performed the song in the encore at
many concerts. (None of the lyrics are the same as Lennon's.) Both versions
of the lyrics are available on my WWW page.

WHO IS MR. MURDOCH REFERENCED IN ROGER'S SONG "DEAR MR. MURDOCH"? IS
HE REAL?

Yes, Mr. Murdoch is a real person. He's basically a media tycoon who owns
things all over the world including: British newspapers (The Sun, News of
the World, and the Times), Fox Network (TV in the US), 20th Century Fox,
the Delphi computer service, part or all of a German TV station, etc . . .
There are specific parts of the song that refer to things about his paper--
things like the nude pictures typically run on page 3 of the Sun.

IS "ROTWANG'S PARTY" A SONG RELEASED BY FREDDIE?

No! The song is on the B-side of Love Kills from the Metropolis sound-track but it is *not* written or sung by Freddie. It was written by
Giorgio Moroder, but I'm not sure if he was also the one who performed it.

How To Get Queen Discographies and Other Archived Files

The QMS has an extensive archive of articles, reviews, discographies,
and more. The archives are available via WWW if you have access. All
of the archived material is on the web page, so if you have web access,
this is the preferable way to get the information.

The web address is http://www.ozemail.com.au/~freddie/music/queen/

Follow all the pointers to find what you need.

To get the archived files via e-mail, email the archive server
at (freddie@ozemail.com.au). To get any file, put the following
in the BODY of a letter (NOT subject!).

Filesend: <filename>
Filesend: <filename>

You may make multiple requests at one time, but they must be on separate
lines and structured as above. When requesting files, please be
considerate. You may request as many as you like, but the archive
computer isn't dedicated to just the QMS, so please try to make your
requests in groups of no more than 20 files at a time. That way, we
won't cause problems for other users on Paul's system. The archives
are NOT automatic, so it may take a day or two for you to get your
requested files. Please do not resend requests if you don't get them
right away.

When requesting files, make sure you type in the name of the file exactly
as shown in the LIST file including capital and lower case letters. The
server is case sensitive.

Request the file LIST for the current available list of files.
Request the file LIST_dates for the last date the files were changed.

All discographies include the track listing for all the albums,
singles, 12", CD singles, etc. There are also two "GEO" files which
give the locations of QMS members who have volunteered the info.

QMS DIGEST ARCHIVES

Some very old QMS digests are still located at the cs.uwp.edu ftp
site, while Volume 3 digests from February to June of 1994 are
in the archives.

Volume 3 digests (with Kathy as Empress) are available with the following:

Digest-Vol3.# where # is the number of the digest, and "index" is the file
which has the index of what digest was sent on what date.

To get copies of recent qms digests, mail to:

mail to majordomo@stat.lsa.umich.edu

text of:

Other Queen Info on the Net

QMS is an e-mail group. There is also a Queen newsgroup on the net
called alt.music.queen. Since it is in the alt group heirarchy, it
is not available at all sites.

Queen WWW pages: There are a number of Queen WWW Page on the web.
More will be added to this list in the future, but here are a few
for now:

http://www.rt66.com/unicorn/queen.html -- run by Sheri Hurt. Contains
the QMS FAQ (this file), biographical info, articles and inter-
views, pictures of Queen, individual band members, QMS members,
and Queen related locations in London.

Contains the lyrics to all Queen and solo songs, a collectibles
           discography, biographical information and more.

http://diana.ecs.soton.ac.uk/~mrd/music/discog.html -- Mark Dobie's
official QMS Queen discography page. Contains discographies
for Queen's albums and singles, each band member's solo
discography, and a few additional items.

http://www.wienerworld.com -- BFI Video information is available here.

lists from QMS, including Queen music in advertising.

http://www.ozemail.com.au/~freddie/music/queen/ -- Run by Paul Roberts. Has
all of the QMS archives as detailed above in the archive
           section.

http://queen-fip.com -- The Official Queen Worldwide Web Site --
This is located at a Fuji-corp site and is truly an official
page about the band. It includes album cover gifs, sound
files, a bit of merchandise, and a place where you can list
           ads.

Due to the huge number of web pages, I can no longer list them all in
the FAQ. There are links to many from my web page, Andy's web page,
and many of the others.

Older QMS digests are still available at the ftp site at cs.uwp.edu, and
at what I believe is its mirror site ftp.sunet.se along with some gifs.
There are lyric and discography files there, but be warned: they have
not been recently updated and they are not all correct. The ones in QMS
archives are up to date.
