Norton AntiVirus

AutoProtect Self Test failed

AutoProtect Self Test failed means that you dont have enough conventional
memory on your system. The NAVTSRW.EXE, which is loaded in your WIN.INI
file, must see at least 470 kb of conventional memory.

How can I find out how much conventional memory I have?

If you are using MS-DOS 5.0 or higher, you can do a memory check (MEM.EXE)
from any DOS prompt. Type the following:

C:\MEM.EXE

A few lines of information appear on your screen, one of these lines
mentions Largest Executable File Size. This will tell you how much
conventional memory you have available on your system Programs.

Example:

Memory Type Total = Used + Free
---------------- ------- ------- -------
Conventional 640K 87K 553K
Upper 155K 145K 10K
Reserved 384K 384K 0K
Extended (XMS) 7,013K 1,374K 5,639K
---------------- ------- ------- -------
Total memory 8,192K 1,990K 6,202K
Total under 1 MB 795K 231K 563K

Largest executable program size 553K (566,736 bytes)
Largest free upper memory block 10K (10,096 bytes)
MS-DOS is resident in the high memory area.

How can I free up more conventional memory?

. Remove some of your device drivers and TSR's loaded from config.sys
or autoexec.bat files. Use a memory manager program (QEMM, 386MAX, or
MS-DOS MEMMAKER) and allow their program to help free up conventional
memory. Just a reminder that Norton Antivirus 3.0 TSR (NAVTSR.EXE)
should not be loaded when optimizing your memory. Load your device
        drivers into high memory.

.	Note: Fax Document #4228 discusses how to load NAV 3.0 into high
              memory
