The Norton AntiVirus 3.0

Memory usage and optimization with Auto-Protect

Automatic protection from virus infection is provided by installing NAVTSR
into your computer's memory allowing computer functions to be monitored.
Listed here are several options for loading and adjustments for memory usage
for NAVTSR to accommodate a wide variety of computer systems and
configurations.

Can I load NAVTSR high?

You don't need to load NAVTSR high, because it will load itself high into
blocks of high memory that are unused by other programs. This capability
promotes optimum compatibility with your system.

Are there different ways to load NAVTSR?

Yes. NAVTSR.EXE is loaded automatically as a device driver in the last line
of the config.sys file by the installation program. The line reads:

DEVICE=C:\NAV\NAVTSR.EXE

Note that you may have a different drive letter and path depending on where
you installed Norton Anti-Virus. If you are using the DOS 6.0 or higher or
Windows 3.1 memory managers HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE, you can use the command
INSTALL in place of DEVICE for better memory optimization. The line in
config.sys would then read:

INSTALL=C:\NAV\NAVTSR.EXE

Another alternative is to load NAVTSR.EXE from the autoexec.bat file. In the
autoexec.bat, the line would read:

C:\NAV\NAVTSR.EXE

Again, you may have a different drive letter and path name. If you load
NAVTSR from the autoexec.bat, it should loaded at the end of the file before
NAV.EXE.

Do I need to use my memory manager to optimize NAVTSR?

If you are using a memory manager such as QEMM or 386MAX, you do not need to
optimize NAVTSR. If you want to optimize memory, we recommend doing so
before installing Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is already installed,
remove the NAVTSR from CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT and then reboot before
running the optimization program. You may delete the complete line or add
the letters REM and a space to the beginning of the line. Once the memory
optimization is complete, replace the line or remove the REM and reboot again.

Can I remove NAVTSR from memory?

Yes. Some programs require you to unload all memory-resident TSRs when
installing or upgrading. If you are installing or upgrading software scan
the installation disks. Then disable NAVTSR by adding add the letters REM
and a space to the beginning of the line that loads NAVTSR in the config.sys.
Alternately, you can prevent NAVTSR from loading by rebooting your computer,
and then holding down both Alt keys right after you hear the first beep.
After you install your new software, reboot as usual, and NAVTSR will again
load as before.

Can I adjust NAVTSR to use less memory?

Yes. If your computer has a limited amount of memory available, you can
configure the amount of memory used by NAVTSR. Start the Norton AntiVirus
Scanner by typing NAV at the command line, or by double-clicking the Norton
AntiVirus icon in Windows.

.	Choose the Tools Options command.

.	From the Category list, choose Auto-Protect.

.	Choose the Startup button on the right side of the Options
        Auto-Protect settings dialog box.

.	Specify in the Types of Memory to Use group box the types of memory
you want automatic protection to run.

Another way to reduce memory usage is by adjusting the Auto-Protect settings.
Be aware that turning off options reduces the level of protection. Use the
table below to determine which options to select. Settings are under the
Tools Options command in either Auto-Protect or Inoculation category.
Follow the steps listed above to access the Tools Options dialog box, and
then choose the appropriate button as indicated.
