This file describes how you can play PLACEBO.BSP and other custom levels under Quake.

You need to create a directory called "maps" under \quake\id1\ and
place your levels in there. Only *.BSP files are understood by Quake.
(*.MAP files are _not_) They are "compiled" maps.

First Method (More Powerful - Total Control):

1. Start Quake;
2. Access console with ~(tilde) key,located above TAB on your keyboard;
3. Type SKILL # (where # is from 0 to 3 - easy to nightmare (if custom
   level has no "skill" settings you can skip this step);
4. Type MAP NAME (where name is the title of a *.BSP file: for example
   PLACEBO);
5. If you would like to play multiplayer Quake, have one person start the
   coop/deathmatch game and _before_ the other player(s) connects, go to
   console and type MAP PLACEBO, close console and wait for other player
   to connect. They will be placed in the level accordingly, as long as
   all of you have PLACEBO.BSP in your \quake\id1\maps directory;

Alternatively:

1. Type QUAKE +SKILL 2 +MAP PLACEBO from command line if you would
   like to play PLACEBO.BSP with a "hard" skill (For "True" experience);
2. If you skip the +SKILL parameter on command line, Quake will start
   with a "medium" skill. Under OS/2 or Windows'95 you can add those
   settings  to your Quake icon/shortcut;
   Use QUAKE +SKILL 2 +MAP (no level name), if you want to always start
   Quake with "hard" skill and skip the demos. They might get boring,
   after you have seen them a million times. Quake will complain (look
   below) and place you at the console. You can do anything from there.
3. If Quake complains that it "COULDN'T SPAWN SERVER MAPS/.BSP," either
   directory \MAPS or .BSP file are not present. There might be problems
   with a *.BSP file, also.

I hope it helps and that you will have as much fun playing "Place Of
Belonging," as I had when I created it <g>. If you have any questions
and/or comments, send me e-mail,
