*** 1 - Introduction ***

Welcome to this new release of the Wasteland Series maps for DOOM by Berserker79 (berserker79@ngi.it). The WAD file wstland.wad includes all the orginal three maps from the author (Alberto Barsella) plus a few resources such as a TITLEPIC screen and level names for the intermission screen. The first two maps in the serie were available from the Doom Archives since long ago, while the third map (Sands Of Death) was uploaded only recently. I received the latter mentioned map and the resource WAD by the author himself and decided to group all the files together and upload the resulting WAD to the Doom Archives.

Wasteland should have been a replacement episode for "The Shores Of Hell", but the author never completed it (as far as I know) and only three maps are complete (I received from Alberto a fourth map, but it's widely incomplete and I didn't think it would be useful to include it into this "new" release).
The only modification I've done to the maps (mntfire.wad and sndsdth.wad) was to remove the ammo and weapons caches located near the levels starting areas: those rooms were added by the author only to provide players with the required ammo to complete the level if playing the maps without having completed the previous, but now that I mergeed the three maps together I believe there's no need anymore to have those rooms. :)

The following sections of this readme file include the original text files that came with the single levels. You can find an intro and an outro story for each of the maps (reccomend you read the intros before playing to gather some insights into the levels), levels description from their author, the author's credits and permissions.

WASTELAND: DEAD BASE (version 1.0) (position E2L1)

INTRODUCTION

It had been four hours since Lt. Morrison left the starship and still the receiver's screen stayed blank. Maj. Barowsky, sitting in front of the communication terminal, pressed some keys and called the mother ship.

``Maj. Barowsky reporting. Four hours ago Lt. Morrison teleported to the planetary surface, near the Prometeus Base. I haven't yet received any transmission from him nor from the base.''

``Gen. Vitesse here, you are ordered to take all the weapons on board and descend to the surface. Investigate the base and locate the causes of the loss of transmission. Should you encounter any hostile presence you should track its origin and eliminate it.''

``I'm sorry, sir, but Lt. Morrison left equipped with all the high-power energy weapons, including the latest BFG 9000 gun. The only weapons on board are some archaic shotgun and chaingun....''

``We all know your battle skills are far superior to those of Lt. Morrison, I have no doubt you are the best soldier to deal with whatever lies in the Prometeus Base. Your orders are to proceed to the command center, which is a large square building located at the eastern end of the base and enter through the main door which is on the western wall.
Should anyone down there be still alive the command center is the place where he will stay. Gather as much information as you can, eliminate hostiles and re-estabilish transmissions. Good Luck!''

`Oh fuck!' Maj. Barowsky thought.
`Well, someone will have to fix it sooner or later. I'll make sure that whatever took control of the base will regret this.' he said equipping himself with a megaarmor and several weapons. `Good, there is also a rocket launcher.....'
Then, looking again at the base diagram, he bravely stepped into the teleporter......

WELCOME!

Welcome to the first mission in the Wasteland series: Dead Base. In this mission you play the role of Maj. Barowsky as he cleans the lost Prometeus Base from alien creatures and locates the information which will eventually allow him to proceed towards the origin of all the evil.

Description:
the setting is open-field/city-like, bright light, many buildings,
high demand of processing power.

This is my first attempt at creating WAD files for DOOM.
The creation of this WAD was made possible by the two great programs
called DEU 5.1 and BSP 1.1.
In this WAD I made my attempt at the creation of multi-floor buildings
using teleporters along staircases. The only 'true' teleporter is the
one in the beginning, all subsequent teleport effects should be ignored
(if you don't look at the map too often the illusion of multi-floor
is better....) The jammed door that you will find helps creating the
effect of two separate floors.
I also tried to concentrate in creating a realistic (and also playable)
lighting conditions, I wanted to have buildings cast shadows, but that
would require more hours of sector hacking and many more 2-sided LineDefs
which would slow down the game a lot, so I dropped the idea.
As for the difficulty, this is an average level, the experienced player
will have no problem to complete it.

EPILOGUE (read after you completed the level)

Maj. Barowsky, his face covered with sweat and blood, climbed up the
red mountain, following the smell of the evil which had turned the
Prometeus Base into a graveyard. After a few minutes he came to a cave,
the trail was clear, this was the source of the devastation.
Firmly holding his fully loaded Plasma Gun he entered the dark mouth
of the cave, ready to face everything that might lurk inside.
The tunnel proceeded upwards, towards a large room lit by flaming
torches, he leapt forward and......

......entered the second mission of the Wasteland series: Mountain of Fire.

WASTELAND: MOUNTAIN OF FIRE (version 0.9) (position E2L2)

IMPORTANT NOTICE

This level is the sequel of `Dead Base' and MUST be played after that level, otherwise you will never have enough ammo to complete `Mountain of Fire'.

INTRODUCTION

Maj. Barowsky slowly advanced in the dark cavern, sneaking carefully towards the dimly lit room where the cave guided him. He stood still for a moment, to let his eyes adjust to the reduced lighting, then pulled his out the chainsaw and started it. `Whatever lurks in here will have to come close to attack' were his thoughts as he approached the flickering torches.
As soon as he entered the large cavern a growl emanating from the right made him shift quickly towards the left corner of the cavern. He turned towards the source of the growl. Nothing moved in the dark, but still inhuman growlings emanated from some point closeby.
`Damn! Those bastard spectre-like beasts are invisible in this low light.' he thought as he placed the chainsaw in a defensive position. He had the impression of a moving shadow when something hit his weapon. Firmly grasping the chainsaw he let the gas go. The machine changed from an ill coughing to a frightening roar, its steel teeth biting the ghostly flesh of the abomination and ripping it apart. The horror's attack ended abruptly as the roaring blade cut through its brain, sending the hellspawn back where it came from. Then, still holding the chainsaw in position, he examined the room carefully and saw several dead bodies lying around. He walked towards one of them and knelt down to investigate it closely. The corpse lay face down in a pool of blood, its smell that of burnt flesh; he turned it on its back with his foot and noticed a large burnt area
in the chest, clearly the result of a direct hit from a plasma gun.
`This is the work of Lt. Morrison' he thought `I wonder why he didn't report his findings to the starship.'
He pulled out the transmitter.

``Maj. Barowsky to Wanderer starship'' he said into the microphone.

``Computer ready to receive transmission'' replied the metallic voice of the starship's on-board computer.

``The Prometeus Base is clear from the unknown hostile force which had taken it. The force seems to be composed of semi-human beings and unknown monsters which look like they have come directly from hell. I have located the source of the evil to be in the volcano near the base, I will explore the mountain and then report again. You should contact Gen. Vitesse, send him this report and ask for support.'' Barowsky said.

``Affirmative'' replied the machine.

``Up to now I have been unable to find out where the population of the base is, nearly six hundred people can't just have vanished into thin air. Over and out.'' and switched the transmitter off.

He advanced towards the partly open hi-tech door, a strange object to find within a volcano, and pressed the switch. Nothing happened.
`Damn! The mechanism is jammed. Let's see if this helps...' he thought as he stepped back and aimed his shotgun at the door.
The shot shook the door, partly freeing the mechanism and making the door slide up just enough to let a man pass. Nothing moved in the dark corridor beyond the door. No sound came from the cave.
`I feel like I'm walking straight into a trap....' he thought. He pulled out the map he had found in the Secondary Control Room of the Prometeus Base and examined it.

`Ok. First of all I will visit the underground complex and have a look at the computers. Hmmm. First tunnel on the right. Ok.
Another promising place is the Observation area....
Let me see, it can be reached directly from the tunnel near the bridge, good. What I can't understand are this `our area' and `their area', maybe the population of the base has split in two groups. I must also check what this city is. According to the starship computer the Prometeus Base never received the order to build an underground city in the volcano. Maybe the Complex's computer contains some more info. Well, time to go...'
He placed the map back into his pocket and, holding the plasma gun in attack position, sneaked inside, towards the underground complex.

WELCOME!

Welcome to the second mission in the Wasteland series: Mountain of Fire. In this mission you play the role of Maj. Barowsky as he proceeds towards the source of evil which destroyed the Prometeus Base. You will wander through the strange places which lies within the volcano, fighting nameless evil to reach the underground complex. Eventually, you will escape from the volcano and emerge in an eerie and deadly place.

Description:
the setting is inside a volcano: there are corridors, rooms and
some larger areas. Overall the level should run smoothly on all machines.

The creation of this WAD was made possible by the two great programs
called DEU 5.1 and BSP 1.1 (dmgraph and wt helped, too).
In this WAD I continued my work in the creation of realistic
lighting effects. When you walk through corridors you will find
areas lit by torches. Don't expect any torch in natural cracks.....
Some of the rooms have objects (pillars, etc) which
cast shadows onto the floor and on the walls.
This level takes place in a volcano, volcanoes contain lava, and
lava is deadly. If you fall into the lava YOU ARE DEAD. There's
no way to get out of it. If you see dangerous ledges then SAVE YOUR GAME.
Special effects include: waterfall with sound, a couple of attempts to
recreate cave-ins, a fallen bridge and computer messages!
The difficulty is higher than Dead Base.

EPILOGUE (read after you completed the level)

Maj. Barowsky walked to the mysterious door, now open, and examined the
bare room which lay behind it. No sound came from the area. He stepped
inside, noticing a hollow sound as his feet hit the room's floor.
`An elevator' he thought looking at the switch on the right wall.
He operated the switch, making the room slide slowly down
with the sound of complex machinery.
`Three and a half hour ago' he thought, the message of Lt. Morrison still
in his mind. `Three and a half hours ago Morrison recorded that message.
If I want to reach him I must move faster than this.
If we can meet and combine our firepower we'll have much more chance
to get out of here alive. I wonder where the monsters are coming from,
if Morrison was here three hours ago he must have cleaned both the corridor
and the complex, but still I found the places filled with horrors.
And the complex was empty, not a single men from the base was there.
Where are the six-hundred people? Did they get away? Why didn't they
communicate anything to the command?
I wonder if the semi-human monsters could be.....
...no, no, it can't be. This is no stupid videogame, this is real life,
and in real life people can't just become blood-thirsty monsters.'
While he was thinking the elevator reached the bottom of the pit and
stopped; a dark corridor, dug into the volcanic rock, departed from
the elevator, leading north towards a very lit area.
`Look like this leads back outside this cursed mountain, good.'
He walked towards the light, his shotgun ready to deal with whatever
might lie between him and his freedom.

Here ends Mountain of Fire, with Maj. Barowsky walking into the third
mission: Sands of Death.

Prepare yourself for the third mission!

WASTELAND: SANDS OF DEATH (version 0.5) (position E2L3)

IMPORTANT NOTICE

This level is the sequel of `Mountain of Fire' and MUST be played after that level, otherwise you will never have enough ammo to complete `Sands of Death'.

INTRODUCTION

Maj. Barowsky walked carefully along the corridor, trying to relax and regain strength, preparing himself to face more orrors. The dark cave, dug into volcanic rock, seemed to lead outside the cursed mountain. He reached the end of the passage and looked at the endless desert which lied outside. He checked his weaponry before leaving the cave and.....

BEEP!

He istinctively jumped aside, placing his back to one wall, only to realize that the beeping noise originated from his transmitter.
`Damn it!' he thought recovering from the shock.

``Maj. Barowsky here, what's up?''

The metallic voice of the ship's computer came through the loudspeaker: ``This is my sixth attempt to reach you, a message arrived half an hour ago, but I was unable to reach you.''

`Must have been interferences caused by the volcano' he thought.

``Ok, you can transmit me the message now'' he said.

``Affirmative'' replied the machine.

The small, colorless screen of the transmitter blinked briefly and a test pattern appeared. He pressed the 'ready' button.
Some text appeared, indicating that the message originated from the starbase in Kavoran, was received twenty-six minutes ago and was an encoded military transmission. `More orders, I guess'. The screen flashed and the text was replaced by the smiling face of a young woman.

``Hi! Looks like you're not on board, Frank.'' said the woman ``Well, I'll just leave the message to the computer, so that you can read it later.''

`Jasmine? Why in hell is Lt. Morrison's wife calling during a mission?'

``Hope everything down there is ok. I called because I'm leaving with Delta-Omega squadron. Looks like they're having trouble in the underground mines on Gataran-III. We're going there to clean the mess. The last communication speaked of demons walking in the mines. Demons! Can you believe that? That people should mine more and drink less! Well, if you want to reply to my message be sure to send it to the Destroyer and NOT to the Kavoran starbase. See ya!''

``Message received correctly'' he said into the transmitter ``standby and prepare to record my reply. It should be sent to the Destroyer...... well, let's say two hours from now.''

``Recording system ready, you may proceed to send the message'' said the loudspeaker in reply.

``Hi Jasmine! I and Frank separated, but we should meet in a short time. Looks like his transmitter is having problems, at least that's what he said in his last transmission half an hour ago. Here the situation is ok and.....'' `Damn myself! I'm talking to a space marine like me, not to a stupid girl!'

``Computer, abort recording and delete message'' he shouted in anger into the microphone ``Prepare again for recording. Send the message ASAP to the Destroyer''.

``Jasmine, you should not joke about demons, here the situation is critical. Prometeus Base is lost. Whatever happened here I can't explain now because I don't understand. Anyway demons and I repeat DEMONS walk freely on the surface of the planet. I found many deads both at the base and in an underground complex which appeared on no maps, but they add up to thirty or fourty. The population of the base was six hundred. I have no idea where they have vanished. As for Frank, I've lost contact with him eight hours ago. Anyway I found a message recorded two hours ago in the complex's computer. If I don't have problems I should reach him in a short time. According to the trail of deads I found he's doing ok. Looks like the new BFG9000 is really effective as the guys at techo-labs say. When I meet Frank I will send one more message. Bye Jas, and please BE CAREFUL on Gataran-III. Barowsky out. End message''.

``Message recorded. Will be sent to Destroyer starship ASAP.''

``Ok, Over and.....No, WAIT!'' he said ``Can you send me the layout of the area located north of....'' he looked at the hi-res positioning equipment ``....0x45FF123 0xE34522FE''.

Buzzing came from the transmitter.

``Affirmative, it's a rough mountain area, mainly composed of.....''

``ROUGH MOUNTAIN AREA? From here it looks like a desert! Check the orbital scanning equipment and repeat scan.'' he ordered.

A few seconds passed.

``Systems check report: scanner is functional at 100% The area north of your position is a rough mountain area, with eight principal peaks, ranging in height from.....''

``Stop. There must be something wrong with the atmosphere....''

``According to the readings of the scanner there's no interference.''

``Yeah, but what I see here is a desert and not a 'rough mountain area'.''

``Performing hi-res analysis, please wait.''

`Oh, fuck! The base is lost and now the ship's systems are going berserk....'

``Report of hi-res scan of sector north of 0x45FF123 0xE34522FE clearly indicates a rough mountain area, with eight principal peaks....''

``Ok, cut it.'' he said.

`Great, first demons overrun a Confederation Base and now a desert appears as mountains on the starship's scanners.' he thought.

``Keep the area under control. Over and out''.

He stepped outside, walking in the dark sand of the desert. Big rocky pillars emerged from the sand, pointing up towards the red sky. Among the pillars, on his left, a huge green building sit on the sand, castng a dark shadow. He directed his feet towards the building but, as soon as he reached the sunny area, he felt the impossible heat of the sun bite his armor and flesh. He jumped back and examined his suit. He had never seen so many red light flashing at the same time: the thermal stabilization was completely gone, probably killed trying to protect him from the heat of the volcano not long ago.
`Well, looks I will have to run.....' he thought looking at the burning sand. He took a deep breath and ran towards the dark shadow of the building. Two beasts tried to stop him, but he routinely eliminated thew with two well-placed shotgun shots.
The entrance of the building was barred by a grate. Behind the grate corridor lead deeper into the building ending with some
kind of wooden door. He checked the walls and found a locked panel, a bluish skull-shaped niche He turned around and examined the strange black building which stood several hundred meters from him. Some kind of entrance seemed to be on this side of the building, but nothing was clear in the hot air of the desert. `I must find the key to this panel.....I think the best
way is to explore the pillars systematically, trying to minimize runs through the burning sands. I will start with the black
pillar north of this building and proceed in an anti-clockwise order. This should minimize exposition to the sun and also
let me reach the pillars from the direction of the entrance or at least of the shadow' he though examining his automapper.
He pulled out the hi-res positioning equipment and checked his position:
`0x45FF123 0xE34522FE' displayed the box.
`What? Same position as before??? This is impossible!
I have moved many units, this can't be.'

He took the transmitter.

``Computer, check my position on....''

Only static came from the device.

He shook the device, knowing perfectly that this wouldn't change anything and tried again.

More static originated from the device.

His tries were interrupted by a large, round shape appearing in the air from behind the corner. He dodged the burning gas sphere emitted by the beast and pulled out his rocket launcher.

The battle had begun.

WELCOME!

Welcome to the third mission in the Wasteland series: Sands of Death. In this mission you play the role of Maj. Barowsky as he continues his search for the source of evil which destroyed the Prometeus Base. You will face the problem of exploring a deadly desert in search of the key to allow access to the 'big green building'. Eventually, you will succeed and be able to enter the place to find the fate of your friend Lt. Frank Morrison.

Description:
the setting is in a deadly desert. The level requires a good amount
of processing power. It's easier that it may seem on first approach.
In this level you will learn the value of shadow in a desert.

The creation of this WAD was made possible by the two great programs
called DEU 5.21 (GCC) and BSP 1.1 (dmgraph and wt helped, too).
This wad is an attempt at something different from the 'classic level':
the deadly desert will prevent sistematic exploration, the best is
to follow Maj. Barowsky's advice (which you just read in the
introduction....).
This wad contains some nice pillars with shadows, some 1-sided transparent
doors (and idea of mine discussed and expanded on the doom-editing
mailing list with Cameron Newman and Tom Neff) and a
convincing illusion of a bridge.
One more fountain appears in this level and it has sound!

EPILOGUE (read after you completed the level)

Maj. Barowsky looked frantically around, but no more balls of fire were
travelling towards him. He pulled the blue object from the pocket
and put it into the skull-shaped niche, making the wall's panel
slide up to reveal a wooden lever.
He moved it down, causing the grate to slide slowly into the ground.
Looking once more behind him he stepped inside, in search of his
friend and of the red key which would have allowed him access
to the short black pillar emerging nearby. He stepped inside
and advanced in the silent corridor of green marble.
`A human will reach you position soon' the words he had read
on the screen in the hidden control room were still hanging
around in his brain. `Why "A human"? We are two. And Morrison
must certainly have reached this position. Maybe they haven't
yet discovered my presence. I also wonder what 'operate the change'
means. If they kill me I'm dead and there's nothing to change....'
He reached the end of the marble corridor where three dark wooden
doors blocked his path. Blood was flowing from beneath the central
door and creating a pool near his feet.
Not a single sound originated from inside.
`This place is too damn quiet!' he thought as he reached forward
to open the central door.

Here ends Sands of Death, with Maj. Barowsky walking into the fourth
mission: Mausoleum.

Prepare yourself!

Alberto
