This document provides solutions for the most common problems you might
encounter when running Diamond Mind Baseball.

----------

"Unable to find DMB files at location" : <location>

If you get this error message when you start Diamond Mind Baseball, it
means that the game cannot find a valid set of player files at the
location shown. The most common reasons are as follows:

- you have installed an upgrade to Diamond Mind Baseball, but have not
yet installed any season disks to work with it. If this is the case,
read the document titled Installing Season Disks for instructions.

- you used the Setup/PlayerDir/New command to notify the game that an
existing directory on your hard disk contains player disk files, but
you mistyped the drive or directory name. If you think this is the
case, choose Setup/PlayerDir/Modify to make any necessary corrections
and try again.

----------

Player statistics are not being saved

If you have played games and find that team standings are being saved
correctly, but none of the player statistics are being saved, there
is a problem with the FILES= statement that should be in your CONFIG.SYS
file. This can happen in several ways:

- there is no CONFIG.SYS file in the root directory of your hard disk

- a CONFIG.SYS file exists but does not include a FILES= statement

- a CONFIG.SYS file exists, but the FILES= statement has a number that
is too small. We recommend a number of 20 or higher.

- a CONFIG.SYS file exists but is not getting used because you are
pressing a special key (which varies from computer to computer) that
bypasses the normal startup sequence

- a CONFIG.SYS file exists, and you have set up multiple configurations,
and the configuration you are currently using does not have a FILES=
statement or has one with a number that is too low

- you are starting your computer from a boot disk, and the boot disk
does not have a CONFIG.SYS file, or it has one that is set up incorrectly
(as in the previous four points)

Unable to print reports on a Hewlett Packard DeskJet 820Cse printer from
a computer running Windows95

This printer was designed to work specifically with Windows applications,
and it seems to have trouble working with some DOS programs like Diamond
Mind Baseball. We have been unable to get HP to provide us with any
information on this problem, but we've been able to figure out a couple
of things you can do to get it to work.

From the Windows95 desktop, click on the Start button, then Settings,
then Printers. Double-click the HP DeskJet 820Cse entry in the list of
printers. Select Properties from the Printer menu. This causes a pop up
form to appear. Click on the Details tab, click on Port Settings, and
make sure the box next to "Spool MS-DOS print jobs" is checked. Then
click on OK until you're all the way back to the Windows95 desktop.
Restart your computer.

This will help, but it doesn't seem to be a complete solution. We have
found that it is necessary to "prime the pump" by sending a small amount
of text to the printer after you start the computer and before you start
Diamond Mind Baseball. One easy way to do this is to open the MS-DOS
window and entering the commands

  cd \dmb7
  dir >lpt1:

Everything seems to work after the DIR command is executed. We do not
regard this as a good solution, however, since it means wasting a piece of
paper each time you start your computer. So we'll continue to search for
a better answer. If we find one, we'll pass it along.

In the meantime, keep in mind that you can also take advantage of the
game's ability to save reports to a file. If you do this, you can later
open these report files using any Windows text editor (such as Word, Works,
or Notepad) and print to your HP 820Cse that way.

----------

"Unable to open team file" message when exporting statistics

This generally means that you have supplied a nonexistent drive or
directory as the destination for the export or that your target disk
has run out of space.

----------

You get ready to play a game, select Go, and nothing happens

This is a clear sign that you do not have enough conventional memory
available to run the game. Please see the Memory Management section
of Chapter 2 of the Diamond Mind Baseball user guide for a full
discussion of memory-related issues and solutions.
