I. Introduction
---------------
PainKeep is a DeathMatch-only "mission-pack" designed for use with the registered version of Quake III Arena. PainKeep Arena not only offers brand new weapons, but also rich level environments packed with tons of new sounds, new special effects, great new features, and lots of surprises.

All standard bots have been newly trained by Team Evolve. They will surely try to add you to their scoreboard frag count in single player mode, team mode, or network play.

Enjoy,
Team Evolve

II. INSTALLING PainKeep Arena Beta 1.0
--------------------------------------
In order to play PainKeep Arena you must have the full registered version of the id Software game Quake III Arena.

B. Normal Installation

Unzip the PainKeep Arena zip file into your \quake III Arena and keep
directories intact. Once the file has unzipped, you will see a \PKARENA directory in
your \Quake III Arena directory.

The Beta 1.0 Contains Two Levels from the upcoming finished version of PainKeep Arena. This demo serves as a test bed to discover bugs, as well as giving the demanding audience a taste of PainKeep Arena now. Some weapons,
items, secrets and surprises have been purposely left out. We wanted to keep a few things a surprise when the entire mod is done! Once you've unzipped the Beta, change to your Quake directory and type PKA to play. You can also create a PainKeep Arena shortcut on your Windows desktop and start a game straight off your Windows desktop!

The map names are PKA17ST and PKA18 - You can pull them up by lowering the console by first
pressing the ~ tilde key, then type either MAP PKA17ST or MAP PKA18 to load these by name.

III. WHAT'S DIFFERENT ABOUT PAINKEEP ARENA?
-------------------------------------------

A. Goals

PainKeep Arena goes back to Deathmatch's original emphasis - "Make other people die".

B. Changes

Vote Hub Mode ***(NOT IN BETA)***

The democratic way to play! By default the game is in "Vote Hub" mode. The Vote Hub is a special startup level that has entrances to all levels in PainKeep. This mode will return all players to the Vote Hub after a level is completed. At this point, run or fight your way to your favorite map entrance. The map with the most players entering will be the next map played. In the event of "ties", a level will be randomly selected. Once you have voted you go to a status view until all votes are collected. You may choose to change your vote at this point. Vote Hub Mode can be disabled.

Inventory System

Some of the toys we've added to DeathMatch have a different mechanism of weapon selection. All hand launched inventory items can be can be cycled through by using "1" key, by default. You may also setup specific keys to activate PainKeep Arena items using in game menu options.

IV. CONTROLS

V. New Features - The Weapons

** The AirFist

Blast players or objects across the room. Also a great way to launch yourself up and over obstacles!
Great Defensive Weapon.

Note: objects moved by AirFist blasts will eventually respawn in their original respawn positions)

** Exploding Shells (Double Barrel Shotgun)
Shotgun Shells that are chock full of tiny explosive pellets. Watch the crowd scatter as a bunch of tiny explosions spray the room!

Note: If you have picked up exploding shells, you must deplete your entire supply before you can shoot normal shotgun shells again. The maximum number that can be carried at any one time is 10

** The Nailgun
This version of an authentic carpenter's Nailgun shoots much higher velocity nails. These nails are hot too! Never touch them until they disappear because not only do they penetrate your enemies, but sizzle your flesh as
well. Skilled marksmen can do some really impressive stuff with this gun.

** Chain Lightning Gun
A devastating version of the Lightning Gun. When the gun is fired and a target is hit
(Easier Said Than Done!), the bolt will seek the nearest living target within visual range.
It will continue to jump to all living targets until the player is out of cells or the fire button is released. Targets killed by this bolt will become extra crispy critters!

** The Dragon
Team Evolves version of the Grappling Hook. Features a Pink Dragon tongue, and a unique
"come-here" feature. Ever wished you could reach that Quad Damage across a chasm?
Just stick it with the Dragon and reel 'em in! Or hang around the ceiling and shoot
your enemies as they run underneath you.

New Items
** AutoSentry (Not in Demo)
Hate it when someone won't stop following you? Just drop one of these cannons and let them provide a little automated cover fire.

** Beartraps
Step on it and *WHAM!* The player is burdened with this huge trap clamped to their leg.

Note: the trap will eventually fall apart once attached to a player

** Can of Pork and Beans (Side Effects not in Demo)
Ever wished you could carry a health pack around with you? When consumed the Can of Pork and Beans adds 100 health, but can cause embarrassing side effects and give away your location.

** Gravity Well
A Gravity Bomb that spews sparks of lightning and sucks all objects and players within range inward in a large spiral. When opponents actually reach the Well, watch the groovy gib fire-works! Once dropped, make sure you run! (Run Forrest RUN!)
