                     History
================================================
================================================

The idea for FragFest began in the summer of 1998.
The Net 1 guys in Brewton, AL had been having small
LAN Parties with three and four people for a while,
but thought it would be a LOT more fun if they could
get more people involved. How to do this?
A phone call to Gulf Coast Computer Services and
the means presented itself.

They churned ideas around, played with names, etc.
FragFest was almost called QuakeFest, Death From Above,
blah. Anyway . . . .

FFI was held in Springdale Mall in Mobile, AL during
August 1998, what humble beginnings! We only played
Quake II (though there was a demo of Unreal).
Here was the setup . . .

Six machines, all provided by Gulf Coast (yeah Michael!)
were the tournament machines (FFI was tournament only) on
a 100Base backbone (again, thanks to GCCS for the hub!),
connected to a P200 with 128 MB of RAM running Linux 5.1
as the server. Michael from GCCS from kind enough (how
kind!) to bring his personal machine from home to run
the 29" monitor GCCS provided for onlookers to watch.
Man, the matches were awesome on that thing!

Everyone fragged until the mall closed on Saturday. There
were three teams of three. Only nine people...not very
big, eh? As I said, humble beginnings.

FF2 was MUCH bigger. It was held in December, 1998 over a
Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The grand prize rose from free Internet
access to a physical prize....a Diamond Monster II V2 12MB.
It wasn't free anymore either (DUH), cost was $10.
The card had to be paid for and so did the rental (not in a
mall this time). FF2 was held at the Business Innovation Center
in Mobile. It was a full LANParty (BYOComputer), and tournament.
Lots more games were played (Half-Life, Shogo, Q2, QuakeWorld,
UO, etc.). There were 30 attendants (whoohoo!), a great
improvement over the 9 at FFI. FF2 also lasted an entire weekend,
versus the one day of FFI. We also had a 100Base backbone
(thanks again Michael). Here's the BIG difference: T-1 access.
Yea baby!

We also had two servers (was supposed to be 4, but problems happened).
One was a PII 350 with 256 MB RAM (provided by Net 1) and one was
a PII 266 with 64 MB RAM. Best part was Overman agreeing previous to FF2
to recam our demos from the finals! They rock! FF2 rocked! We rocked!
