Shortly after recording nightmare E1M1 in 1:34, I downloaded Rob Albin's demo
of E1M2 in 2:15. He did a good job, so obviously I had no choice but to get
to work on E1M3. After many, many tries over the course of a month, the case
is closed on this board as far as I'm concerned. (Try to beat it punk!)
Note that on some occasions, the final screen shows 2:48 instead... fluke of
nature I guess.

A few things to point out: There are 3 shamblers on this level, so you may
wonder why you only see me fight one of them. I telefragged the other two
by standing in the place they normally materialize (bam!). Also, although I
keep free mouselook on all the time, I press the right mouse button to snap
the view back to center. That may give the impression that I'm using some
sort of auto-aiming cheat, but it's just a key binding.

If you don't know how to view this demo, here's one way to do it:
   1) Put E1M3_249.DEM into the ID1 subdirectory of Quake.
   2) When in Quake, bring down the console and enter the command
      "playdemo e1m3_249".

So now I'd like to see some good times for the other levels, especially from
all you seasoned 'clan members' out there. Personally, I find making this
type of demo just as fun as playing on the internet (less lag too). But as
Rob Albin points out, it's really a gentlemen's sport. If you want to make
one of these demos, here are some ground rules:

- You're not allowed to modify any SV_* variables to your advantage,
especially SV_MAXSPEED and SV_FRICTION. However, turning off automatic
  vertical-aim with SV_AIM 1 is acceptable (I think it's better).
- Modifying CL_* and R_* variables should be OK. I don't think setting
"R_DRAWFLAT 1" to speed up the game makes any difference. If Quake was
programmed properly, it should have no effect on your total running time.
It just gives you a smoother frame rate (although I never use it).
- You're not allowed to run any Quake C patches while you make the demo, or
  tamper with the .DEM file.
- You must get 100% kills and 100% secrets in Nightmare mode (SKILL 3).

I've already seen some demos that are obvious cheats, and I'm sure eventually
people will find ways to cheat undetectably. They're all bastards. In the
meantime, enjoy this one!

PS. Even though my web page kind of bites right now, you can still go to it
and download my Quake controls setup. I think for a lot of people, this is
probably worth it.
