(1) Introduction

(1.1) What's Doom2 done Quick?

First of all, Doom2 done Quick is a Doom2 demo of completing all of Doom2:
Hell on Earth, from the beginning to the end, on the Ultra-Violence skill
level, in only 21:16! If you think you've seen fast playing and impressive
skill before - think again.

Doom2 done Quick was recorded in a special way: Until the release of the Doom
source code, it wasn't possible to connect different lmps together. The result
didn't play back correctly. But with the release of the source code, it became
possible with some small modification. In this run, every level was recorded
separately, and they were later connected (just like the other QdQ projects).
See the "More details about the run" section for more information.

And the most special feature of Doom2 done Quick is one we've kept a
surprise. It's something that was never done before in Doom: Doom2 done
Quick is filmed from a camera perspective, just like the Quake done Quick
series. Most of us have wanted to see it done for a long time, and we hope
you will enjoy the result!

(1.2) Installation instructions

Unzip d2dq2116.zip into your Doom2 directory. We have included a special exe
file that is necessary to play the demo because of the filming and also
because without it, the demo won't work past map23. The reason is that there
is a small difference between Doom2 v1.9 and the released Doom source.

d2dq2116.zip contains five files:
d2dq.exe - that's the D2dQ executable
d2dq2116.bat - that's the batch file that plays Doom2 done Quick
d2dq2116.lmp - that's the demo file
cam.cam - that's the camera information file for Doom2 done Quick
d2dq2116.txt - that's what you're reading now

After you unzip them into your Doom2 directory, just run d2dq2116 and the demo
will play. Alternatively, you can run d2dq -camdemo d2dq2116. You can switch
to the player's perspective by pressing "p" and back to the camera perspective
by pressing "c".

(1.3) Credits

The people who created Doom2 done Quick are:

Everyone listed here also helped with various technical intricacies,
bug-testing and so forth. Also, many people recorded runs that didn't
make it into the final version but were still essential in finding new
ideas or provoking faster ones to be made. Without anybody, this run
would have been slower and less impressive.

The utilities we used to record the demo included:

DdQStats, a modified version of DosDoom. DosDoom is the Dos port of the Doom
source code, which also has a few other features. The official DosDoom page is
at http://www.frag.com/dosdoom. It was made by Chi Hoang. The modification
for DosDoom to make it possible to start with the right stats was done by
Yonatan Donner. DdQStats is also available from the QdQ page.

LMPC by Uwe Girlich to connect the demos together. It is available from
http://www.planetquake.com/demospecs/

To film the run, we used:

MakeCam by Yonatan Donner which makes the cam.cam file out of a camera script.

D2dQ.exe, another DosDoom modification, that uses the cam.cam file and shows
a demo from a camera perspective. By Yonatan Donner.

(2) More details about the movie

(2.1) Timing

Just a quick explanation of why we say we completed Doom2 in 21:16.
Doom2 shows the times for all the levels and rounds them down to the nearest
second. We used the rounded times. We visited the secret levels because of
two reasons: 1. It takes much longer to finish level 15 the normal way than
go through the secret levels. 2. We wanted to finish all the levels in the
game, including the secret ones.

(2.2) How the run was recorded

Each level was recorded separately on skill 4 (Ultra-Violence), starting
from the exact same stats we ended the previous level with. (It is possible
with DdQStats, available from the QdQ page.) Then the demos were connected
using LMPC into this run.

(2.3) How the run was made into a movie

We've used an in-house utility by Yonatan Donner to create the cam.cam file
from a camera script, similar to Anthony Bailey's ReMaic
(http://www.planetquake.com/ReMaic/) but a lot less powerful. The D2dQ
executable reads the cam.cam file and plays back the demo using the camera
information in it.

(3) Frequently Asked Questions

Those are questions that we are sure we'll be asked :)

Q: How did you do (this or that)? I can't do it, did you cheat?
A: No, we did not cheat. Just improve your skill until you can do it too.
Remember that you can go faster when you run diagonally (forward + strafe).

Q: I can't play the run under Dos! I get this (or that) error!
A: We're aware there are a few problems with playing Doom2 done Quick under
Dos. We weren't able to solve them, so you'll have to try playing it with
Win95. It might work under Dos, though - it works for most of us.

Q: How can I watch the demo from the player's perspective?
A: While the demo is playing, press "p". To return to the camera perspective
again, press "c".

Q: Why did you play Doom2 as a run instead of single levels?
Q: Why did you connect demos together instead of recording one session of
Doom2?
A: There are already runs of Doom2 single levels and Doom2 in one session.
Try ftp://ftp.sch.bme.hu/pub/compet-n/
When you make a connected run, you can make it a lot faster and a lot more
impressive than a normal run.

Q: I want to make my own connected run! What should I do?
A: Get DdQStats from the QdQ page: http://www.planetquake.com/qdq/

Q: I want to film my own demos! What should I do?
A: If there is enough demand for it, we might release some more information,
but it's pretty complicated.

(5) A few comments by the players

Adam:
First I'd like to thank all my mates in the team: Yonatan, Esko, Panter,
you all are awesome players and nice guys! I would also thank Peo,
Kai, Ilya and Anders for their wonderful ideas! All the guys who
did the filming - thank you for stepping in!
Special thanks to Istvan for being an excellent master and a kind fella!
And in general, all COMPET-N people - without any of them, this run
would have been slower!
And you, dear spectator for watching this!

Yonatan:
Thanks to everyone in the team, it was a pleasure doing this with you! And
many many thanks to the filming team for doing a great job in a very short
time. This is my last Doom project (hopefully) except for one which will be
released soon, so I hope you will enjoy this - comments are welcome!

Kai:
No time...
