Model Name : tentacle.mdl

installation directory : quake1/tentacle

Model description : It's Purple Tentacle from LucasArts adventure classic
"Day of the Tentacle." He's got Duke Nukem's RPG for a gun
(?) and a lightsaber instead of the axe. The skin allows
you to use any color combo you'd like, even the dreaded
purple guy himself. Many of the death scenes are repeats,
but I wasn't trying to make something perfect, just fun.

			Actually completed ~ 6/3/97

Other info : I know it's late to release such a crusty old Q1 model, but
I only found it recently and thought I'd share the thing with
the world. I had actually hacked DOTT files to get sounds, even
saber sounds, but I could only find the original model. I hope
it's enough for you rabid DOTT fans. Why PT you ask? Well, I
don't really know, I think I was playing the game around this
time and he was easy enough to make, not some complex humanoid.
I even went so far as to screen capture many of the game's
animation frames so it'd be accurate. If I had to do it all
over again I'd do Sam from "Sam & Max Hit the Road," but oh
well. My original motivation was the constant delays for Jedi
Knight. I wanted to kill some troopers and try out a saber so
once I figured out how to make this one with the pseudo shell
effect I just went for it. I had done some Doom stuff before
and enjoyed experimenting so much that I made matching face
graphics and put trooper skins/sounds in place of the grunts.
I even made a 'death skin' hoping to learn enough to program a
skin change at death. The final effect was fun, but I hadn't
thought of putting the thing on the net until recently. I also
realize there is another Purple Tentacle out there oddly enough,
it's for Q2 and packs a much higher poly count.

Additional Credits to : LucasArts for the great games, id Software for the ability to
modify their products, the guy who made those old qME betas

Thanks to : My high school AutoCAD instructor for unlocking my 3D talent

* Play Information *

New Sounds : NOT YET (made some -- gotta find them)

CTF Skins : NO (it's Q1 you can change the color)

VWEP Support : NO (it's Q1 VWEP wasn't mainstream)

* Construction *

Poly Count : 138

Vert Count : 88

Skin Count : 2

Base : scratch, from primitives

Editor used : Old qME beta, CoolEdit (to get the sounds from DOTT -- which
couldn't be included), IPhoto Plus (paint program for skin)

Known Bugs : arms clip around edges, normal stand is kind of stupid (he's
"reloading"); when I animated him I didn't realize that qME's
grid snap was set to something like 0.5 resolution, so some of
the animations may suffer from distortion. I also just noticed
this version of the model doesn't have the pseudo shell effect
I had desribed, I must've added it to the saber later, but I
distinctly remember having it in game. I also noticed one of the
death scenes looks like slow motion, this was my first attempt
at animating and I did it all frame-by-frame I didn't know how
to do convincing deaths until my first humanoid. If I find the
modern copy I'll port it to Q2 (with sounds if possible). BTW:
The skin isn't Gl friendly, with a width of 308 pixels.

Build/Animation time : About two days to build/skin and 1.5 or 2 weeks to fully animate

* How to use this model *

It's been so long since I've used Q1 models that I've honestly forgotten :/
I think you slap it in a sub directory like 'quake/whatever/models/player'
then type quake -whatever
