How to Install Downloaded Unreal Maps

Step One:
Download the file. Each map you download should come in a .zip file, which is just a fancy pants way of compressing the map into downloadable, bite-size chunks.

Step Two:
Do you have WinZip? If not, hop your butt over to http://www.winzip.com and download WinZip for free. This very cool app will decompress that big, nasty 749k file into a bigger and nastier 1.483 MB file faster than you can say "Just zip it!" If you have WinZip, ignore everything just said and go to Step Three.

Step Three:
Once you have mapname.zip (or whatever it's called) on your drive, double click to open it. You'll need to tell WinZip to dump it in your (your drive letter here):\unreal\maps directory (i.e. c:\unreal\maps). This shouldn't be too hard. It might mean some navigating around, but life isn't always easy, is it?

Step Four:
Open the readme.txt file that comes with the map and read it! It should contain lots of useful information about the map you just downloaded. Be sure to remember or write down the name of the map, because you'll need it in order to play the map.

Step Five:
Start Unreal.

Step Six:
Start a new game, selecting difficulty level if available. Once you're in the game, press the ~ key on your keyboard, then type in "open mapname" (without the quotes and the name of the map replacing mapname) and hit enter. The rest is cake and you should be on your way to pureeing mayhem.

Bonus Step:
You can automatically launch the map by clicking on the mapname.unr file in the Unreal\maps directory. Unfortunately, you can't configure your game for specific conditions
