1) THE GAME
   --------

1.1) Scenario:

It's late, and the darkness is alive with enemies. You can hear them, hear the distant sound of gunfire and screams, but its getting closer. Suddenly in the distance you see the flash of a torch followed by the stutter strobe of a tommygun's muzzle flash. There is a brief scream and then silence.
The beam of the torch is moving now, coming towards you, you can't make out your surroundings and you're only armed with a pistol. What do you do? Do you use your torch to look for a better weapon, and give yourself away - or do you slink into the shadows and hope darkness and the element of surprise are able companions to your magnum?

Meanwhile, the enemy approaches......

1.2 About

Midnight Massacre takes good old-fashioned Kingpin DM and turns the lights off. Starting with a magnum mod, you're not entirely defenceless, and the darkness helps hide your vulnerability. But you need your torch to find new weapons, and enemies to kill, unfortunately, your torchlight gives your position away to your enemies. - Welcome to Midnight Massacre.

1.4) Are there any new keys / commands

Not a new one, but one you're probably not very familiar with. You have a flashlight to help you in the darkness (otherwise it would be just plain stupid). The default bound key for the flashlight is "L", but you can bind any key to work with it - e.g
bind k flashlight
typed at the console will bind it to the "k" key.

1.5) Installing and running.

If you are just a client wanting to connect to a game you don't need to do anything except understand what's going on. You're obviously a good-mannered gamer in that you've read this far already - so you don't seem like the type to join the server and say things like "Why's it so dark? or "Where do I get a torch from?". Good for you.
If you're a server admin, I won't patronise you by explaining in kiddy talk what you already know. If you want to run this at home though, on a LAN, create a folder called massacre under your kingpin directory - e.g. c:\program files\kingpin\massacre and extract all the files into there. In there you'll find a batch file called nightserve.bat - simply run this and get your friends to connect to your server. It is set to cycle through the standard KPDM1-5, but is playable on any map.

2) RELEASE HISTORY

06/12/99
V1.01 Interim patch version 1.
This release fixes a couple of problems that weren't evident during LAN testing and is a quick-fix until V1.1 comes out later this month. Gameplay remains unchanged - I've just changed the message of the day to try to cut back on client overflows, changes some of the values assigned to the hack that stopped fog acting as infra-red - you should no longer see 3 real-number errors on connecting (should also help on player disconnects). I've also force changed one of the GL settings which unfortunately acted as full-on daylight if activated when the client joined. However their advantage was short lived for, as the game progressed, areas of the map blackened and would not light up with the torch, ruining their fun somewhat. Thanks to [UW]Tooledup for reporting the error and providing me with sufficient info to track down the problem.

23/11/99 - V1.00 Initial release.

Midnight Massacre is distributed as a WindowsX86 compatible .dll file.

4) ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
   ----------------

Thanks to PlanetKingpin, Modcity, Poisonville and Wireplay for mentioning this mod in their news. I'd also like to say a BIG thank you to Tony at Modcity for getting the mod scene rolling along with wireplay's server bods - especially Drilla - these two especially for running the wireplay Midnight Massacre server.
I'd also like to thank Rat Instinct for his programming help - for pointing out the obvious so many times (but the numbers are dropping), for testing (eventually) when i could get him off my bloody ISDN connection. And to all those who've played Midnight Massacre and enjoyed it (and i suppose those of you who didn't - at least you made the effort).
If I've missed you from this mention please let me know ASAP.

		Cheers.
