The Flame Dancers
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

A campaign for Command and Conquer.
Created by Andrew Griffin (buggy@adam.com.au)

This package contains a new 15 mission campaign for GDI.

You should have received the following files in this distribution:
  flame.bat 700 bytes
  flame.db 719,643 bytes
  f_dance.exe 227,946 bytes
  flame.txt (this document) 7,732 bytes

To install this campaign, you MUST run the batch file (flame.bat).
If you don't, and manage to install the campaign, the graphics for
the new structure will not get installed, and all of the maps will
look stupid. Please do not attempt to run the f_dance.exe file by
itself.

The Flame Dancer campaign takes place about two years after the
defeat of the Brotherhood of Nod by the Global Defense Initiative.
During this two year break, the GDI had never been seriously challenged
and has grown complacent, believing that the threat of another group
like the Brotherhood emerging was very unlikely. However, they did not
count on the Flame Dancers and their mysterious leader Remorse.

The Flame Dancers seek only destruction, not world domination, and have
known for years (perhaps decades) that the GDI would be their opposition.
Thus they have been infiltrating the organisation for years, getting into
positions of authority and access to vital areas of the organisation. They
have managed to hide themselves well, but the time has come for the
Flame Dancers to emerge. Remorse has ordered the flames lit - can you
stop him?

What you get in this campaign
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
For starters, you get a 15 mission campaign for the GDI. These missions
are all new, and are of moderate-high difficulty.

You also get to face a new structure, called the Flame Pod.

What you need for this campaign
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
You need the following:
 1. a video card capable of displaying 640x480 256 colour screens
 2. Command and Conquer from Westwood Studios

You must have the Flame Dancer files in your Command and Conquer directory
as two files must get edited.

If you do not already have it there, copy the conquer.mix file off your
cdrom and put it into your Command and Conquer directory. This file will
be changed (the new graphics put it) by this program.

How to use this campaign
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Follow these steps:
 1. put the 4 files in this distribution into your C&C directory
 2. start the flame.bat file:
If you are using DOS, simply type 'flame' (without the quotes) on the
  command line, and hit return.
If you are using Windows 95, you can just double click on the flame.bat
  filename if you use Explorer.

You will now have started the installation program, and will see a nice
screen before you.

To move up and down the list of choices you are being presented with,
use the Up and Down arrows on your keyboard. Use PgUp to go to the top of
the list, and PgDown to go to the bottom of the list. You hit Enter to
have the currently highlighted selection activated.

The Sections
=-=-=-=-=-=-
Story of the Flame Dancer Conflict
----------------------------------
In lieu of video clips (can't do them), you get animated scripts telling
you the story. This is essentially the conversation you, as a GDI Commander,
are having with your superior.

I advise that you sit through all of it, as it will bring you up-to-date on
the situation in which GDI suddenly finds itself.

This should be the first thing you look at.

G.D.I Reference Library file FD-10095a
--------------------------------------
This contains two GDI 'documents', which chronicle the history of the Flame
Dancers from the time they first came to the attention of the GDI, and also
of how the Flame Dancers had been able to enact the blow that you learnt
about in the Story.

While not crucial, it does provide background information on the Flame
Dancers, and I recommend you read it all.

This should be the second thing you look at.

Install Flame Dancer campaign
-----------------------------
This installs the Flame Dancer campaign.

What it does is the following (for those who have a desire to know):
 1. patches your game.dat file (or game.new if you have the 1.22 patch
    for C&C installed)
 2. installs the .ini and .bin file for missions scg01ea to scg15*. Every
mission in the GDI mission tree is replaced, although on levels where
there are multiple choices, you only the get the one mission
 3. installs the mission.ini file so that you get the correct mission
    debriefings
The changes to the graphics are done from the batch file.

Uninstall Flame Dancer campaign
-------------------------------
This uninstalls the Flame Dancer campaign.

It will remove the changes to the game.dat/game.new file.
It will delete the .ini and .bin files that it installed (including the
mission.ini file).
Again, the changes to the graphics are done from the batch file.

View Instructions
-----------------
This tells you how you play the Flame Dancer campaign once you have
installed it.

What it doesn't tell you is:
 1. when you play the first mission, you will still get the initial GDI
briefing where you are told about the beachhead assault. Ignore this,
there was no way to stop it getting played.
 2. When you wil the final mission, you get the clip of the Temple getting
destroyed, and then the newscaster. Again, ignore them, they can't be
   changed.

View Mission Briefings
----------------------
Because of limitations in C&C, I was not able to give you access to the full
briefings within the game. Here you will find the briefings that I wanted
to give you, but was unable to. For roughly half of the missions, the briefing
you receive in C&C will be exactly the same as those here.

You navigate up and down the list as normal, and hit Enter to see the
mission briefing for the currently highlighted mission. The number on the
left indicates what mission it is, and the name is just a name I gave the
mission (usually has some oblique reference to what the mission is about).

I suggest that you don't read some of the later ones (esp. briefing #13)
until you are actually doing that mission. In a few cases (again, esp. 13),
they will ruin part of a previous mission as you will know what happens.

Press Escape to get rid of the list of missions.

What does it do?
----------------
Describes the changes this program makes (this is described above as well).

Exit
----
You can also press Escape to exit the program.

Changes to the game.dat/game.new file
-------------------------------------
The following changes are made to the game.dat/game.new file:
 1. the Flame Pod is installed (for the V19 civilian building)
 2. the guard tower becomes buildable at level 5
 3. the advanced guard tower becomes buildable at level 10
 4. the commando is buildable at level 15
 5. the transport helicopter is buildable at level 15

That's about all I can think of that you need to know. Have fun playing
these missions, that's what they are for. Some are tough, while others
should be pieces of cake to most of you. Oh, once you have decided that
you are done with the Flame Dancer campaign and have uninstalled it and
want to clean up, you may like to delete the files: fpod.shp and
n5l09_fe.v19 which I installed. You may also like to get rid of mmlite.exe
and mmlite.txt which I install only if you don't already have mmlite
installed.
