	- ------- -
	DESCRIPTION
	- ------- -
These two DOS executables are able to extract sounds
and textures easily out of Aliens vs Predator resource
files (*.FFL), so you can import them to own levels
for other games like Quake, Unreal, Half-Life, etc.,
re-edit them for your own AvP user levels or just use
them on your website as background images/sounds.

	- - -
	USAGE
	- - -
Create a working folder on your hard drive to keep
track of things, e.g. 'AvP_resources' and add sub-
folders there for each FFL you like to extract data
out of ('snd2', 'snd3', ... 'tex1', 'tex2', ...).
See below for an overview list which stuff you can
find in which FFL.

Switch to MS-DOS-prompt by clicking its link in Win
95/98 and run ripsnd.exe or riptex.exe from the
sub-folder dedicated to its FFL. Do not run the tools
in booted DOS mode only, because you will receive an
error message like 'no DPMI - Get csdpmi*.zip' then!

Commands:
ripsnd snd?.ffl
riptex tex?.ffl

? stands for the number of the FFL.
Wildcards cannot be used.

You can either take the FFLs from your original AvP
CD (textures are in folder 'fastfile' and sounds in
'HSound', 'LSound' and 'RSound') or from your AvP
installation directory (textures and sounds in sub-
folder 'fastfile').

Examples:
c:\ripleyii\ripsnd e:\hsound\snd2.ffl
c:\ripleyii\ripsnd c:\games\avp\fastfile\snd2.ffl
c:\ripleyii\riptex e:\fastfile\tex1.ffl
c:\ripleyii\riptex c:\games\avp\fastfile\tex1.ffl

Sound files will be saved as Sd?.wav,
Texture files as Tx?.iff.

Have Fun using RipLey!

	- -- ----- -- -
	ADDITIONAL NOTE
	- -- ----- -- -
If you have used ripley.exe which was released some
months ago you might have noticed that the textures
are not extracted as LBM anymore. This is so, because
LBMs can only have a maximum color resolution of 256
and does not support HiColor (64K - 16 million).

The advantage of IFF (Amiga-Interchange File Format)
is also that more common graphics progs can read it!
So you should not use ripley.exe anymore.

	FAQ
	- -
Q: With which program I can view the *.IFF textures ?
A: IFFs are known by several common programs like Adobe
Photoshop 5.0 or later and Paint Shop Pro 5.01 or
   earlier versions,too.

Q: Where do I get these progs from ?
A: The latest evaluation version of Paint Shop Pro can
be downloaded at www.jasc.com. Check www.adobe.com
to download a tryout version of Adobe Photoshop 5.5
(about 70 Megs but it's worth!).

Q: Sorry, but how can I play the sounds ?
A: Just use the Windows Media Player.

Q: How can I re-edit the sounds for personal use ?
A: You can use e.g. Cool Edit 96 or later. This is a
fine program to manipulate WAVs and adding nice
effects like echos, filters or pitch for example.
Get a free unregged version at www.syntrillium.com.

Q: Why I cannot view some of the textures, get blank
screens or receive error messages by the graphics
programs when loading them in ?
A: A single AvP texture is stored three times in three
different color resolutions (HiColor, 256, 16).
The HiColor-IFFs seem being not supported or
corrupted. Nevertheless RipLey extracts all texture
   types absolute correctly.

Q: Is there a way to view the HiColor-IFFs so far ?
A: Unfortunately not. Analyzing their structure and
comparing it to other HiColor-IFFs saved before with
Paint Shop Pro and Adobe Photoshop nothing strange
was found in the file headers and data which could
underline that these textures are corrupted. It must
   be another problem. Fox knows.

Q: How can I import the sounds/textures in UnrealEd ?
A: Nothing easier like that. On the very right column
at the top choose 'Browse SoundFX' and click the
'Import' button at the very bottom to load in WAVs.
To load in some textures choose 'Browse Textures'
and also click the 'Import' button. Do not forget
to convert the textures to BMP or PCX with Paint
Shop Pro or Adobe Photoshop before, since UnrealEd
does not support IFF. Organize your Sounds/Textures
for your own Unreal Map(s) and create some UAX/UTX-
packages by clicking the 'Save' button. Have fun!

Q: Ok, but how I import AvP textures in Worldcraft ?
A: That seems a bit more complicated: to use the
textures in your own Half-Life Map(s) they have to
be 1. converted to TGA or BMP, 2. all packed
together inside PAK (tex and snds) or WAD (tex only)
files (supported by Worldcraft) and 3. loaded in by
clicking 'Tools/Options' from the menu bar, choosing
the 'Textures' card and then clicking the 'Add WAD'
   button.

Q: Enough with exporting sounds/textures from AvP!
How can I IMPORT new ones to Aliens vs Predator ?
A: Surely you have heard about the PREditor team.
These guys currently work on an AvP level editor
which will also be able to import new sounds and
textures, as Top Cat (PREditor producer) had
informed me. Keep an eye on their website:
   www.preditor.com. It's coming December! :)
