[1] Setup

[1-1] -->  Installing Devil's Covenant

     First make sure PAK0.PAK, PAK1.PAK, PAK2.PAK, and PAK3.PAK
are copied correctly into the DC directory. These contain the base
maps, progs, and sounds for the full movie. These files should all
be in a directory called DC off of your main Quake directory. For
example, (... c:\games\quake\dc\  ).

     Your complete file directory when DC is installed should contain
these files...

dir c:\games\quake\dc\

pak0.pak
pak1.pak
pak2.pak
pak3.pak
dc.txt
gldc.txt
maincred.txt
skincred.txt
levlcred.txt
runpart1.bat
runpart2.bat
runpart3.bat
runpart4.bat
runpart5.bat

                   108,803,999 bytes

If your directory looks like this, you are ready to go.

<---------------------------------------------------------------->

[1-2] -->  Running Devil's Covenant

     Once you have PAK0.PAK and PAK1.PAK installed in your DC
directory, along with any of the following movie paks, you are
ready to go. To run DC, you can either use one of the provided
batch files (which should be located in your DC directory) or type
in the command line manually to fit your system.
     To start the movie and run Part 1 of Devil's Covenant (Scenes
1 to 5), either run RUNPART1.BAT from your DC directory or type in
a command line including the game directory where you put DC and the
demo name of the first demo of Part 1.

------------
( Example ): quake -nojoy -nocdaudio -winmem 16 -game dc +playdemo
tintro4
------------

     To run Part 2 of Devil's Covenant (Scenes 6-8) either run
RUNPART2.BAT from your DC directory or type in a command line
including the game directory where you put DC and the demo name
of the first part of Part 2.

------------
( Example ): quake -nojoy -nocdaudio -winmem 16 -game dc +playdemo
scene6
------------

     To run Part 3 of Devil's Covenant (Scenes 9 and 10), either
run RUNPART3.BAT from your DC directory or type in a command line
including the game directory where you put DC and the demo name of
the first part of Part 3.

------------
( Example ): quake -nojoy -nocdaudio -winmem 16 -game dc +playdemo
scene11
------------

     To run Part 4 of Devil's Covenant (Scenes 11 and 12), either
run RUNPART4.BAT from your DC directory or type in a command line
including the game directory where you put DC and the demo name of
the first part of Part 4.

------------
( Example ): quake -nojoy -nocdaudio -winmem 16 -game dc +playdemo
13intro
------------

     To run Part 5 of Devil's Covenant (Scenes 13, 14, 15 and 16),
either run RUNPART5.BAT from your DC directory or type in a command
line including the game directory where you put DC and the demo name
of the first part of Part 4.

------------
( Example ): quake -nojoy -nocdaudio -winmem 16 -game dc +playdemo
drifnjnx
------------

<<<< IMPORTANT >>>>

WARNING--You must exit Quake at the end of every part of DC and
restart it in order to view the next part. The Quake engine can
only process so many sounds without crashing, so if you try to run
two parts in a row without restarting Quake will crash with the
error "out of sfx_t". There is no known way to fix this problem...
a cache flush doesn't do it, and trust me, I've tried just about
everything else I can think of. The reboots are often good for
bathroom breaks.

<----------------------------------------------------------------->

[1-3] --> Minimum System Requirements

     You need to allocate at least 16 megs of ram to Quake in order
for DC to run properly. It may work with less (possibly as few as
12) but performance will be greatly improved with 16 or more, and
it will most definitely NOT run with the default 8 that Windows
provides. Add the command "-winmem x" to your Quake command line
to allocate more ram, where x is the amount of ram you want to
allocate (16, 20, 24, etc).

     The movie runs just fine on my low spec system (P 133, 32 megs
of ram) though it does run slow in a few of the scenes filmed on
the i_fort maps. For a P 133 or below, it is suggested to run the
movie in vid_mode 4, and click down to vid_mode 0 for scenes on the
i_fort maps.

     Running the movie in DOS mode is highly recommended. The
movie is known to stutter in WinQuake even on medium and high-grade
systems with plenty of ram, although performance varies. Running
in DOS Quake with all your available ram allocated will practically
guarantee a good run, however (At the Quakecon CPL premiere, I ran
the movie off a P 300 with 32 megs at 800x640 resolution with no
problems at all). Your mileage may vary.

<----------------------------------------------------------------->

[1-4]  --> Complete File List

     For reference, once you have downloaded the entire movie onto
your drive your DC directory should contain the following files.

[2] Devil's Covenant Specs

[2-1] --> Devil's Covenant Running Time

     The estimated (though not exact running time) for Devil's
Covenant is 2 hours, 10 minutes. This is a complete run-through
from Scene 1 to the Ending Credits, and does not include time spent
loading demos and restarting Quake. This time is approximate, and
may vary by up to a minute or so on different spec systems.

     On a related note, certain scenes may run faster or slower on
different machines (especially the fort scenes, which run slower on
lower end machines). The rhythm of voice lines was timed on a P
133, and didn't seem to vary to much on a p 300 (though the fort
scenes ran a bit faster) Once again, your mileage may vary.

[2-2] --> Devil's Covenant Complete Demo List

     In the event of an unexpected crash during movie playback,
this list is provided for your reference, so that you may restart
the movie at close to the scene where it crashed without having to
run a whole part over again. Listed below, in order, are all of
the demos which make up the movie and their respective Scene
numbers, as well as their PAK locations. You may start the movie
during any part by adding the command '+playdemo x' to your Quake
command line, where x is the name of the demo from which you are
starting.

Copyright / Permissions

Authors MAY NOT use this movie as a base to build additional movies
without express permission of Eric 'StarFury' Bakutis. Reverse
engineering the demos or QuakeC used for the movie is perfectly
acceptable providing this is done only to gain information about
how specific special fx, etc, were accomplished.

The files which make up Devil's Covenant may be distributed ONLY
over the Internet and/or BBS systems. You are NOT authorized to
put this movie or any of it's components on any CD or distribute it
in any way without the permission of Eric 'StarFury' Bakutis, and
the gazillion other people who donated their time and effort to
creating this movie.

Claudio Todeschini, a staff writer at the Italian gaming magazine
"The Games Machine" contacted and worked with me in order to bring this
movie to a pack-in CD distributed with the magazine, and as such this
release of DC is an exception to the above clause--Claudio Todeschini and
"The Games Machine" have my permission to distribute this movie on their
pack-in CD (for the March issue). Other unauthorized distribution that
results in any form of profit is strictly prohibited.

You can give it away... just don't try and sell it.
