I. Overview
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hover, simply put, is a fast paced 3D virtual reality racing
shot-em-up built with the amazing Quake engine by id Software. Hover
puts you up against other human players over a multiplayer environment
where there are no rules, no regulations, just fast paced racing
excitement.

There are no caution flags, nor any ambulances or fire trucks
waiting at the side lines to bring you home to mommy. This is not a
game for the weak of heart. If you hesitate, you die. Your primary
goal is to get to the finish line first, and you must use all the
hardware and software at your disposal, combined with your keen
intellect, to achieve this goal, and to stay alive.

II. The Story
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

In late 2016, a scientist named Ron Zelt theorized a new form
of transportation using the Earth's own natural magnetic field! By
placing several highly intense electromagnets inside a vehicle and
reversing polarity, he theorized you could obtain a hovering effect.
Further more, by distorting this field, you can propel yourself.

Summer, 2023. The first prototype of the Zelt Hovercar was
unleased. Infront of a press conference of thousands of reporters,
scientists, and spectators, the Hovercar rose of the ground about 4
feet, turned 180 degrees, and shot off so fast, that when the vehicle
finally stopped moving, they had to peal the test pilot's remains off
the seats with a spatula. While a slight setback, it certainly
impressed people, which is when the government started funding the
project.

2026, the now formed Zeltech Enterprises unleases a great
breakthrough in Hovercar technology, Inertial Dampeners. By
counteracting the intense acceleration of the Hovercars, this made
possible safe usage, and Hovercars started appearing in retail chains
all throughout the civilized world.

Late Summer, 2030. The nations of Earth break out into World
War III, finally, the struggle ends when the Japanese Empire launches
12 nuclear warheads to all major cities throughout the world, the
resulting counter strikes took out 82% of Earth's entire population.

2032, Earth rebuilds from the war, and a new form of
entertainment is formed, Hoveracing. With no rules except get to the
finish line first, people begin to stock there cars with weapons and
new gadgets, defensive and offensive devices alike.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
III. Your Craft
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

In Hover you pilot a state-of-the-art magnetic levitation
vehicle. It is important to learn all the systems and subsystems of
your craft. Your survival depends on the knowledge of how to use your
craft and the components of your craft effectively.

Please note that all impulses and movement keys can be configured
anyway you like them through the options menu and the console.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
III-C. Your Craft: Cockpit and Chasecam Views
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

In addition to your standard cockpit view, your craft is
equipped with a holographic projection system which allows you to view
your craft in real time from a third person point of view.

To access this third person view you must do the following:

1) Bring down your computer console (~ key)
2) Type in Impulse 50 in your console and hit enter

For future ease of use, your central computer in your
Hovercraft has the ability to bind certain functions to keys on your
controlling input device. Load up the computer console (~) and type the
following:

	bind <key> "impulse 50"

So if I wanted to bind the S key to switch between views it would look
like this:

	bind s "impulse 50"

that's it! now whenever you hit S it should switch to chasecam view.
hit S again to turn off your holoprojector and go back to cockpit view

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
III-D. Your Craft: The Statusbar
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Hover status bar is broken up into 8 sections. The following is a
description of them.

* Weapons Ammo: This area shows the ammo for the available
  weapons in hover.

The "Lighting Gun" ammo slot now contains the rank you are currently
in. (a rank of 1 would mean your in the lead, while 16 would mean
your dead last and everyone is lapping you)

* Kill Rankings: This area holds the 4 highest ranking players

* Weapons Inventory: This area holds icons portraying the weapons in
Hover. The first two slots contain the Machine Gun, and Proximity
mine weapons. The next 4 slots contain the various missile weapons.

The lightning gun slot is replaced with the word "RANK" indicating
that the numbers above this slot is telling the user what place he
or she is in the race.

* Hovercraft Tactical Readout: Previously these two slots held what
keys you had in Quake. It is now replaced with a digital display of
your Hovercraft depicting how many missiles you have left on your
  wings.

* Upgrade Inventory: The PENTAGRAM icon and the ENVIROMENTAL SUIT icon
are replaced with static buttons (switches, dials, whatever). The
QUAD icon and the RING icon are now replaced with lights that light
up when you are currently using that item. (Double Damage and Cloak)

* Health: This replaces the ARMOR section of the quake status bar. It
shows you how much health you have left.

* Speedometer: Replacing the Health Status, the Speedometer shows the
user how many miles per hour he/she is going.

* Shield/Afterburner/Cloak/Double Damage Status: This section
replaces the AMMO section of the normal Quake status. When you have
shields or afterburners, this section shows you a graphical image of
that upgrade and how many units of energy you have left to sustain
  that upgrade.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
IV. The Weapons
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Your craft is equipped with a variety of destructive weapons.
Here is a brief description of your weapon systems and how to use them
effectively.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
IV-A. The Weapons: Your Arsenal
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Machine Guns:

Your machine guns shoot armor piercing shells at a very fast
rate. This is the basic weapon you start out with, and it
is very effective at disposing enemies at long or short ranges.

Proximity Mines:

You start out with only 3 of these so use them carefully.
Proximity mines have a 3 second delay timer before they arm
to allow you to get clear of them. There blast radius is
pretty large and they cause a substantial amount of damage
to any vehicle careless enough to hover across it's path.

Electromagnetic Burst Missile:

Electromagnetic burst missiles have little damaging effect
but they can turn the entire race in your favor. When a
craft is hit with one of these the electromagnetic drive
on the craft becomes unstable, causing the craft to go
completely out of control for a few seconds until the craft
corrects itself. These missiles have a sizable blast radius
so be careful not to get yourself caught in your own blast.

Sidewinder Missile:

Extremely deadly dumbfire missiles. Medium blast radius,
	and very fast.

Homing Missile:

Half as powerful as the sidewinders, the Homing missile locks
on to it's target and will track him down. It's turning
radius is not very good so it is possible to lose a homing
missile once it has locked on to you if you avoid it good
	enough.

Full Light Amplification and System Hindrance (FLASH) Missile:

The flash missile blinds the pilot of the craft for a few
seconds and causes several errors in the craft it hits.
The most common aftereffect of the FLASH missile is the
corruption of the weapon systems, causing them to "stick"
	a bit. (it's not a bug, it's a feature!)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
IV-B. The Weapons: How To Use Your Weapons
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Your weapons are broken up into 3 sections

	Machine Guns
	Proximity Mines
	Missiles

To select your machine guns press "1" on your computer keyboard.
To select your proximity mines press "2" on your computer keyboard.

Since your craft can only carry 2 missiles at a time you can only have
One type of missile on your craft at all times. This means that if
you pick up FLASH missiles, then come across HOMING missiles, your
flash missiles will jettison off your craft and be replaced with the
new missile type.

To select your current missile weapon press "3" on your keyboard.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
IV-C. The Weapons: Bindings and Impulses
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Machine Guns: impulse 1
Proximity Mines:	impulse 2
Missile Weapon: impulse 3

Cycle Weapon: impulse 10

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
V. Items, and Powerups
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

In Hover you have a variety of items and powerups at your
disposal to kill your opponents quicker and make you race faster. In
this section I will explain those powerups to you and how to use them
effectively.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
V. Items, and Powerups: Item Powerups
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

So far there is only one item powerup, the missile box. You
will find these floating around the tracks at various locations. When
you pick up a missile box you will acquire the two missiles. Every
missile box has a random missile type in them, so you will never really
know what kind of missile your getting until you pick it up.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
V. Items, and Powerups: Hardware Powerups
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

There are 4 hardware powerups you can acquire from a menu when the race
first starts. These powerups are:

	Shields
	Afterburners
	Cloaking Device
	Double Damage

When you choose a powerup, the hardware to use that powerup will be
added to your vehicle, and an icon of how much fuel that powerup has
will be displayed in the lower right corner of your status bar.

To activate that powerup use the spacebar key. Shields are the only
powerup which you don't have to activate, since they come online
automatically at the start of the race. You have 100 units of shields
and 200 units of the rest of the powerups.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
VI. Installation
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

MS-DOS:

	cd quake
	mkdir hover
	cd hover
	pkunzip -d hover11-15.zip
	cd ..
	quake -game hover

Windows 95:

    1) Move into your existing QUAKE directory
    2) Create a subdirectory there called 'hover'
    3) Move into the hover subdirectory
    4) Unpack the mod using winzip in the quake/hover/ directory
    5) Place all the .bat files in your QUAKE directory
    6) Go back to the QUAKE directory
    7) Run the appropriate .bat file for your version of quake

	Normal Quake: Hover.bat
	GLQuake: GLHover.bat
