Heretic II - Full Version Qoole '99 Partial Compatibility Tutorial
by Richard "Sat" Connery [rconnery@hereticii.com]
-------

Although being a Worldcraft user myself I was very impressed by Qoole '99 and
I think that even though it's currently in beta it's much better than using
WC (which I also got it working with Heretic II). But let's get right to the
chase. You will need a few files:

1. Heretic II's .M8 textures converted to Quake II's .WAL format. You should
be able to find the textures on a 12Mb .ZIP. The textures were converted by
Cecil "[Cecil]" Stormclaw [jorlando@mnu.edu]

2. Heretic II entity list converted to Qoole '99. Avery "Tiglari" Andrews
[tiglari@hereticii.com] has recently put out an experiemental (though I found
very good) entity list for Qoole '99.

Okay, assuming you already have the mentioned files follow the points below
and you should be able to start using Qoole '99 for editing your favourite
game:

Please Note: I did this tutorial having in mind that I don't make Quake II
levels. To have semi-Heretic II support in Qoole '99 you will have to give up
your Quake II editing needs. You should have no problem getting Quake II
support back into Qoole '99 simply by backtracking through the tutorial but
even so I advise you to proceed with caution IF you are making levels for
Quake II using Qoole '99.

A. On your "..\Heretic II" directory copy HERETIC2.EXE to the same folder and
rename the copy to QUAKE2.EXE

B. Add a "\baseq2" subdirectory to "..\Heretic II"

C. Extract the Heretic II textures in .WAL format with full path names to
"..\Heretic II\baseq2". You should end up with a "..\baseq2\textures" which,
in turn, should have 10 subdirs like "..\textures\andoria".

Take the time to read through [Cecil]'s .TXT file. :)

D. Rename Tiglari's .ENT file to QUAKE2.ENT

E. Okay, now you will some sort of .PAK explorer. Go to the directory you
installed Qoole '99 in and open the QOOLE99.PAK. Find the QUAKE2.ENT stored
there. You will need to replace this with Tiglari's Heretic II entity list,
which should by now be called QUAKE2.ENT if you are following this tutorial
step by step.

F. In the Qoole '99 directory there is a subdir called "..\TexLists", open it
and proceed to the "..\TexLists\Quake2" folder. Delete all the .TEX files in
there. Put the ones that came in next to this file in that folder.

Please Note: I've only included two .TEX meaning only 2 out of the 10 texture
folders Heretic II uses. To know how you can make the remaining 8 .TEXs read
the end of this readme.

G. Open Qoole '99 and in the Preferences, point the Quake II executable to the
fake one you created in the Heretic II directory.

That should do it, if you followed the tutorial to the letter and if the three
moons are aligned with Vega then it should work. :) Now whenever you want to
edit Heretic II levels choose Quake II | Standard etc, etc.

These steps worked for me so if it doesn't for you well... I'm sorry but I'll
prolly wouldn't be of much help. Also, both [Cecil] and Tiglari have nothing
to do with this tutorial, the textures are fine and the entity list is fine so
don't go pestering them if you are having problems making this tutorial work.

The files they created are just required, that's all. Speaking of which, thank
you [Cecil] and thank you Tiglari.

Like I said above you can screw up the Quake II part of Qoole '99 so if you're
_still_ making levels for that erm... game, then I suggest you install two
copies or something but I don't even know if that will work as it seems Qoole
stores its information in the Windows Registry. You work it out hot damnit!

The .TEX files were a real pain to do but at first I thought I had to type all
those texture filenames by hand! /me almost shot himself

All I did was going to each of those 10 texture folders and type this at the
DOS (remember it?) prompt: "DIR > nameofthedirectory.txt" btw, that's without
the quotes <g>. Then cut out all the uneccessary rubbish and put in front of
each filename "nameofthedirectory/" (again without the quotes) and save as
nameofthedirectory.TEX.

There! Have fun now...
