1. Story

The near future.

A future that has been swamped by war.

Two titanic armies struggle against each other in the country, the cities,
even the blasted wastelands of lands lashed by nuclear fires.

On these battlegrounds men fight, men die, and commanders issue their orders.

You are now one of these commanders, it is now upon your decisions that men's
lives depend. Gain a victory and you will be hailed a great hero, suffer
defeat and your grave will be unmarked and forgotten.

History is written by the victors.

So go out and write some!

4. How to play

As you can tell by now, DiD is no normal Quake mod, it is a full TC like
AirQuake or QuakeRally, meaning that all the rules that govern your game are
changed. This section will explain how you play the game.

A - DiD basics

The DiD interface is controled by two basic control methods, the orders tool
and the menu system.

The orders tool can be seen in the center of the screen when you start a game
of DiD, it is a metallic box shape and it functions just like a point 'n click
interface in a real time strategy game like C&C. Click on a unit and it is
selected (A health bar will appear somewhere near it to show it's health),
click somewhere else and the unit will move to that location. Right
click and your unit will be deselected, click on an enemy unit and you
selected unit will attack it.

The menu system is summoned either by right clicking when no unit is selected,
or pressing the space bar, this will show you the following menu:

        1. Selection Menu
        2. Building Menu
        3. Cancel

Pressing 1 will give you the selection menu, where you can select multiple
units at one time via catagory menus, failing that you can simply select all
combat units (Whatever menu selection you make, your havesters will not be
selected unless you specifically choose them). You may then order your units
around in groups.

Pressing 2 will bring up the production menu, from where you can choose what
you want to build, troops, armoured vehicles & aircraft or buildings. Again
the system is pretty self explanatory. Each unit will cost a certain ammount,
eg:

1. Apache 280
2. Light Tank 120
3. Heavy Tank 180

etc..

Troops or vehicles will appear instantly outside of their respective
facilities, whereas buildings will appear in the center of your screen for you
to place on the map, left click to place them or right click to cancel.

Pressing spacebar or right click again at any time will take away the
menu system.

B - Resource management/Harvesting

Units in DiD are purchased through a resource management system based on units
of ore. This ore can be havested from the ground, where it can be found in
naturally occuring pools (Sounds likely to me!).

To harvest this ore, and thus purchase more units, you will need a harvester.
Once purchased, a harvester will immediatly search out the nearest patch of
ore and begin scooping up resources, before returning to your ore refinery.
Once processed in the refinery the ore will appear on your ore status counter
in the lower center of the screen. The first unit you should purchase should
always be a harvester.

C - Game modes

There are two game modes in DiD, CPU Skirmish and Multiplayer.

In Multiplayer mode, you will be fighting against a human opponent.

In Skirmish mode, you will fight against the computer AI.

Select these modes just like you would in a normal game of Quake.

4. Special tips

Tanks can run over men, remember that when the range closes!

Apaches are great against units like tanks and some types of troopers, but
they are not a war winner on their own, especially when facing rapid firing
units like minigunners or sam sites!

Don't underestimate the importance of elite troop types like flamers... use
them well and they can create a lot of chaos, a few well placed flamers in the
city on DiD6 really make a mess of enemy troops, while clifftop rocket
troopers on DiD4 make a wonderful mess of enemy defenses.

Remember the capabilities of your units... don't expect a group of heavy tanks
to cross no man's land without support, once in position they are devestating,
but in the open with no support they are mown down easily.

Finally, watch out for sneak attacks from unexpected directions!

5. How to run a mod/Technical reference

Don't know how to run a mod?

Simple! Just unzip DiD into a new directory in your quake directory, eg:

c:\quake\did

remembering to keep the directory structure stored within the .ZIP file intact
then run a game of quake with the following options:

quake -game did +map did1

or:

glquake -game did +map did1

You can replace "+map did1" with any other map name such as did2 etc...

It's a good idea to add '-winmem 16' to the command line if you are using
the DOS edition of Quake (Software rendered), this is nessecary because
some of the levels (Eg: DiD4.BSP) are so large that the game will likely
crash without the extra resources. This is not needed for GLQuake since it
applies this without being told.
