                       Mapping for Defeat In Detail

So you 'wanna do maps for DiD huh?

Well okay....

1. Level Info

DiD is meant to be a high quality mod, which along with good looking units
and cute sounds means great looking levels. If you're not the greatest mapper
around, you can still have a go, but your map may not be of a high enough
quality to be released with the main pack. You should really have some sort
of experiance before you try your hand at a DiD level.

Basically, if your map is of better quality than my attempts, then it can go
in the 'official' release packs on the ELF site.

I used a mapping program called BSP, which can be found at,

www.bsphq.com

Many people haven't heard of it, but I've found it useful time and time again
due to it's almost limitless tools, and best of all it's free!

When making your map, try to make it fairly hard to see your opponent's base,
if you can see him directly as soon as you start it won't tend to be a very
exciting game, as all his troops will be in plain view with no oppertunity for
him to surprise you... though DiD6 goes against this trend and is still a very
exciting map.

Try also to be fair with the resources, don't give them all to one player and
none to the opponent, unless you really hate your friends :)

The levels must also try to be GLQuake friendly. GLQuake tends to hate wide
open areas and almost all sky textures (Both features that are found in a DiD
map) About the open areas, I don't really have a solution, but try to do
what you can! :p

Unfortunatly even my maps get the occasional 'hall of mirrors' effect at long
ranges... GL just wasn't designed for this kind of thing, but hey, you can
regard it as a fog of war! :P

2. Map Entities

These are the various entities used in Defeat In Detail:

Currently you have to place buildings on the maps, since player controled
construction is not yet implemented.

INFO_PLAYER_START - The single player start, put one on the level

INFO_PLAYER_DEATHMATCH - This is used for spawning the two players.
Give it a 'side' value of either 1 or 2.
                         One of each is needed.

MISC_SCENERY - This is used for placing scenery on the level.
Give it a 's_model' value corrisponding to the scenery you
               want, eg:
               'progs/tree.mdl'
Make sure that you include a directory structure as above.
You can use any piece of scenery you like, as long as it is
               freeware and you have permission.

CONTROL_CENTER - This is the control center for either player, without which
they cannot run their war effort. This must be destroyed to
win a level, and each player must possess one.
Give it a 'side' value of either '1' or '2'
It functions as a construction yard does in C&C, allowing
you to build other structures, without one you cannot create
                 gun turrets.

MISC_ORE - This is the resource that players collect with their harvesters.
Place it on the ground, and you can give it a 'skin' value between
           '0' and '4'.
This has no effect on it's value but it changes the colour to fit
in with the rest of your level. The skins are:
           0 - Red
           1 - Blue
           2 - Gold
           3 - Green
           4 - Bright Yellow

FACTORY_ORE - The ore refinery. The player must start with an ore factory.
Place this on the map and give it a 'side' value of '1' or '2'

MISC_BARRACKS - This is the barracks for troops, without one you will
not be able to spawn troopers. Give it a side to set it's team

VEHICLE_FACTORY - As with MISC_BARRACKS but with armoured vehicles, doh!

MISC_RUNWAY - As with MISC_BARRACKS, but for the air units.

Extra notes:

All buildings can be given an 'angle' value of 0-360 to change
it's orientation.

3. Submitting Your Map

First either upload the map to a site such as FTP.CDROM.COM or to your own
website, then contact me to tell me where I can get it. (If you don't know
how then contact me and I'll tell you)

You can contact me either via E-Mail at:

harb@planetquake.com

Or via ICQ on:

I'll need the following info from you.

1. Where I can get your map from
2. What size it is in K

You should also include a little about yourself so I can credit you properly.
