Font Filenames
**************

The chart below shows the font filenames for the TrueType(TM)
fonts in the STAR TREK Font Pack. Each installed TrueType
font is composed of a TTF file and an FOT file. The STAR TREK
Font Pack disk contains TTF files which you install in
Microsoft(R) Windows(TM) 3.1. During installation, Windows
creates corresponding FOT files.

Typeface TTF Filename FOT Filename
-----------------------------------------------------
Star Trek | TT1238M.TTF | TT1238M.FOT |
Star Trek Film | TT1240M.TTF | TT1240M.FOT |
Star Trek Pi | TT1241Z.TTF | TT1241Z.FOT |

Bitstream MakeUp(TM)
********************

If you use Star Trek, Star Trek Film, Star Trek Pi, or
Starfleet Bold Extended in MakeUp version 1.0 or 1.1,
you will probably get one of these error messages: "Not a
valid TrueType font" or "Divide by zero."

To avoid this problem, you need to obtain several updated
MakeUp files, which are available on Compuserve. To access
them on Compuserve

1. Log onto Compuserve.

2. At any prompt, type GO DTPVendor and press ENTER.

3. At the first menu, enter either (2) Messages or
(3) Libraries and press ENTER.

4. At the next menu, enter (13) Bitstream and press ENTER.
Look for "M.U.T.T. Files" (MakeUp TrueType Files).

You can also get the updated files by faxing your request
to Bitstream Technical Support at 617-354-7954 (U.S.
and Canada only). If you don't have access to Compuserve
or to a fax machine, call Technical Support at 617-497-7514.
Bitstream will send you the files free of charge.

See "Using the Fonts in Type Manipulation Programs"
in this file for more information about Bitstream MakeUp.

*********************************************
Using the Fonts in Type Manipulation Programs
*********************************************

If you use applications with type manipulation features
such as Bitstream MakeUp, CorelDRAW, or Aldus IntelliDraw(TM),
we recommend that you apply to the four STAR TREK fonts only
those special effects that change the orientation of a
character, for example, flipping or rotating.

NOTE: Keep in mind that if you apply these effects to a
symbol, it will no longer be an official STAR TREK symbol.

Do NOT apply any special effects that change the shape of
a character, for example, creating shadows, 3-D effects, or
stretching. The image created when you apply these types of
effects may not display and/or print correctly.

Here is a list of the effects that you CAN apply without
problems to the four STAR TREK fonts in Bitstream MakeUp,
CorelDRAW, and Aldus IntelliDraw.

Bitstream MakeUp (with updated files): Mask, Regular
Text (AUTO), Regular Text (FIXED), Top of Circle, Bottom
of Circle, Around a Circle, Rotate, Duplicate, Flip
Horizontal, Flip Vertical, Color.

CorelDRAW 3.x: Use as Straight Text, Rotate, Skew, Mirror,
Fit to Path, Fit to Curve, Fit to Circle, Fit to Object.

Aldus IntelliDraw: Mirror, Slant, Rotate.

NOTE: Harvard Draw and Gold Disk Professional Draw do not
work with the fonts in the STAR TREK Font Pack.

You may have other applications with type manipulation
features that we did not test. If you do, follow the general
suggestions mentioned above.

See "Bitstream MakeUp" and "CorelDRAW" in this file for more
information about these applications.

*************************************************************
Microsoft Excel and Aldus PageMaker(R)/PostScript(R) Printers
*************************************************************

The user guide suggests that when you print the fonts to
a PostScript printer, that you select "Bitmap (Type 3)" in
the Windows Control Panel. This usually solves the problem
of missing characters in print.

However, if you make this selection, and then rotate characters
from any of the fonts in Excel or PageMaker and print to a
PostScript printer, you may find that the rotated characters
don't print.

In order to print rotated characters, open the Windows Control
Panel and double-click Printers. Highlight your PostScript
printer and click Setup, Options, Advanced. In the TrueType
Fonts box under "Send to Printer as:", select Adobe Type 1.
Then try printing fewer pages at a time, reducing the size of
the rotated characters, or reducing the number of fonts
or size of the fonts.

*******************************
Harvard Graphics(R) for Windows
*******************************

In some versions of Harvard Graphics for Windows, the fonts
in this package may not appear in the Font menu. If this
problem occurs, contact Software Publishing Corporation (SPC)
for an update to Harvard Graphics.

*********
CorelDRAW
*********

If you type more than five characters of Star Trek,
Star Trek Film, Star Trek Pi, or Starfleet Bold Extended
in CorelDRAW 3.x, you get this message: "String is too long
for desired font. Text may be truncated."

To solve this problem, try setting the text as "Paragraph Text"
instead of "Artistic Text."

******************
Missing Characters
******************

The four STAR TREK fonts do not have characters assigned to
every key on the keyboard. If one of these fonts is selected,
and you press a key that does not have a character assigned
to it, a blank space or a blank box may appear on the screen.
(Blank boxes appear in Microsoft Word for Windows when you
select Options from the Tools menu, and then select any of
the items under NonPrinting Characters. Blank boxes may also
appear when you select similar features in Ami Pro(TM),
PageMaker 4.0, and other applications.)

When you print your document containing these blank spaces
or blank boxes, the spacing is not correct.

To solve these problems, select only keys that have characters
assigned to them. Check the character set charts for the
four STAR TREK fonts to see which keys have characters
assigned to them.

************************
Font Conversion Programs
************************

We recommend that you do not use font conversion programs to
convert the fonts in this package to other font formats, such
as PostScript Type 1. Although you may be able to convert the
fonts, they will not print correctly.

*******
Kerning
*******

All the fonts in the STAR TREK Font Pack support kerning.
However, at the time this file was written, most Windows
applications did not support kerning with any TrueType fonts.
Contact your application vendor for information on the
application's support for kerning TrueType fonts.

*********************************
Screen Fonts at Small Point Sizes
*********************************

Font sizes of 7 or 8 point and below appear as Windows
resident fonts instead of the selected fonts on the screen.
However, the fonts print correctly.

********************
EGA Display Monitors
********************

EGA monitors have fewer pixels than VGA monitors. This means
that fonts do not appear as precise on EGA monitors as on VGA
monitors. However, the fonts print correctly.

******************
Removing the Fonts
******************

To remove the fonts

1. Open the Windows Control Panel and double-click Fonts.

2. Select a font to remove. You can select several fonts at
a time.

3. Click the Remove button. A message appears, asking you to
confirm your decision to remove the font.

4. If you want to remove the font completely from your system,
click the Delete Font File from Disk check box.

5. Click Yes. If you selected several fonts, click Yes to All.

6. Click Close to exit the Fonts dialog box. The fonts are
removed.
