Title : KTDM1 - Kick The Bucket
Filename : mkkick.BSP
ZIP Size : 775 Kb
BSP Size : 1.82 Mb (unzipped)
Version : 31st January 1999
Author : Martin "Killer" Kilcoyne

Web Sites : http://www.martin8.clara.net/ktimpakt
This is the KT-imPAKt Homepage. Here you will find loads of info,
news, features, etc. all about KT-imPAKt; the map pack which
Thanatopsis and myself are currently working on. You will be able
to download the 4 serperatley released KT-imPAKt maps (of which
this is one) from here too as they are completed. We will both be
making regular news updates so keep checking back.

			  http://www.martin8.clara.net
Updated on a regular basis, "Killer's Map and Skin Repository"
contains all my Quake II maps and skins. When working on a new
project, I usually post screenshots here so you can have a sneak
preview of what it's going to look like. If you liked this map
please go and check out my other work here. All my maps and skins
have screenshots so you can see what you are getting before you
download. There is also a fair sized link section to Quake II
			  related sites.
Description : So, this is it, the first map in the KT-imPAKt map pak! If you
like this map then I propose that you will also enjoy the other
maps in KT-imPAKt. When it is complete (first quarter 1999)
make sure you download it :-) Thanatopsis (the guy who I am
working with on KT-imPAKt) has already finished the second map in
the pak. It is called Sandstone Crypt (ktdm2) and is available to
download from the "downloads" section (strangely enough :-) of the
			  KT-imPAKt Homepage: <http://www.martin8.clara.net/ktimpakt>. These
maps (and two others) are being released sperately to give you a
taster of what is to come. Hopefully you will love 'em and then
download the finished product (complete with new console
background, custom textures etc.). For news updates etc. check out
the site. On with the description proper.

This is a follow up to my earlier map "The Rust Bucket" which was
very well recieved by the various map review sites (AWOQ2 - Killer
Map Award, Captain DynaBaul's MPQ2 - 95% Personal Choice Award,
			  Gonz-O-Matic - 89%, Team C.O.T.V. - 4.5 out of 5). If you have
played The Rust Bucket you will feel instantly at home in Kick The
Bucket. Texturing is very similar, waste panels and lots of yellow
lighting. Architecture is fairly similar too, the corridors are
the same as in The Rust Bucket but four of the rooms are of the
open top variety. They are outdoor rooms if you know what I mean.
I think this gives a good feeling of an industrial facility. Lots
of pipes to run about on as in The Rust Bucket. The main
difference between the two maps is their size. Kick The Bucket is
a *much* larger map than The Rust Bucket. There are seven large
rooms in total. There are two distinct vertical levels to the map
which are connected by ladders, pipe ladders, staircases and an
elevator. There is a trap which guards the Rocket Launcher. It
is a platform which can be lowered into the slime by turning any
of the two handles near the exits to the room. Very satisfying
			  when timed correctly >:-)

This is a shorter description than normal because I will be
posting a detailed playing guide to this map on the KT-imPAKt
homepage. Be sure to check it out.

Finally, this is a pre-release of the map. We are looking for some
good constructive criticism of the four pre-released KT-imPAKt
maps. This will allow us to make some tweaks and modifications to
them before we include them in the pack. Please mail me any
comments and constructive criticisms you may have about this map.
Tell me what you think would make the map play / look better and
I'll see what I can do to improve the final version. My e-mail is
			  <martin8@clara.net>.

Thanks for reading, hope you like the map.

By the way if you run or know of any server running this map
			  then please e-mail me (martin8@clara.net).

============================================================================================

N.B. (Eraser users only): I have also included a route table in this zip. This will allow
you to start using the map immediately with the Eraser Bot
without having to "teach" the bots the level. To use it just unzip
the file "mkkick.RTZ" into your "C:\quake2\eraser\routes"
directory BEFORE you load the level for the first time, otherwise
a route called "mkkick.RTZ" will be automatically created and
you will have to delete this and then replace it with my version.

*  Play Information  *

Game : Quake II
Single Player : Just to check out weapon placements etc.
Deathmatch : Yes. 14 spawns.
Difficulty Settings	: No.
New Sounds : No.
New Graphics : Yes, two modified waste textures, see installation instructions.
Demos Replaced : No.

*  Construction  *

Base : New map from scratch.
Build Time : Roughly 100 hours over about 2 1/2 months (modified from an
earlier version which I didn't like much). Definitley my longest
			  map to build do far.
Brush Count : 2235 (of which 398 are entities)
Compile Machine : Pentium II 300, 128 Mb RAM (nice :-)
Compile Time : About 2 hours.
Editor(s) Used : QERadiant 147 (powerful yet easy to use).
Known Bugs : Small vis error in the outdoor room with the pipes running under
the catwalk. It causes a Hall Of Mirrors (HOM) effect in a wall
behind a pipe when you stand near the corner of the room. Not very
noticable luckily but I will try to fix it for the final pack
			  version.

* How To Use This Level *

Installation requires small amount of thought so here's some instructions ;-)

1. Unzip the files "mkkick.bsp" and "mkkick.txt" (this file) into your "quake2/baseq2/maps"
   directory.

2. Unzip the "kt_waste.wal" and "ktwaste2.wal" files into a new folder:
"/quake2/baseq2/textures/ktimpakt" (You must use this path or the textures will not
   work).

3. Start up Quake II and bring up the console then type "map mkkick". If you see
checkerboards anywhere then you messed up, try again. If it still doesn't work then mail
me with details and I'll see what I can do :-)

working with me on it. He really is a great mapper, check out his maps (see the KT-imPAKt
   Homepage).
** Thanks to my cousin PAUL LEES for compiling this map on his P2 300 with 128 Mb of RAM as
my weedy P166 MMX with 32 Mb of RAM just couldn't handle it :-(
