Grand Theft Auto. A game. A game with a type of anarchic twist and a raw
sense of humor. Although it is fairly new and released just a few months
ago, it has already became a hit. Although, there are some new GTA gamers
who somewhat "lost" on what it is about, how to play, and how to extend the
game's abilities. That is why I have taken the liberty of writing a guide
to which it will seem useful and informative to the new gamer and a
refrence to the professional gamers. - Admiral

1. Introduction

1.1 What is Grand Theft Auto?

Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is a PC game that is developed by DMA design and
published by ASC Games in North America and BMG Interactive in Europe. It
is a high action, bloodfest, very similar to Postal. Although, there is a
plot to this game (there is???). You are, how you say, a "courier" and
"employee" of a mob, rising through the ranks of a crime syndicate. You
have to earn the boss's respect and favor by doing jobs that are assigned
to you. They can range from stealing cars, to blowing up a polce building,
to running narcotics, kidnapping, bank jobs, and much more.

There is a top down view, sort of like a helicopter's view, of the game.
This story takes place in three large cities; Liberty City, Vice City, and
San Andreas. Each city has its own style, personality, authority figures,
jobs and missions. Each city is exceptionally large, so there will be
"public transportation" if needed. :)

GTA is a game for Mature Audiences, but I am pretty sure no really pays
attention to those warnings and notices (be honest now).

1.5 What about those weapons?

Fist
Your basic fighting tool. Great for having brawls in the streets with
  pedestrians!

9MM Pistol
Pretty good weapon. The easiest one to find. This will kill people and
cops with one shot, but it is fairly difficult to aim. When running from
the cops, run backwards and fire at the cops while running. You will get
away and kill them at the same time.

Automatic Rifle
Very good gun. You use this when you get a Kill Frenzy (explain later).
It is an all-around good weapon and will kill a number of people and cops
  in a short time.

Flame Thrower
Excellent weapon, but not so easy to find. It will light people and cops
on fire, and they run for the nearest help while on fire. A few seconds
later, they drop to the ground, screaming bloody murder.

Rocket Launcher
Very powerful and deadly weapon. It will destroy vehicles in one shot and
you can destroy buildings with this. But be careful though, both the
flame thrower and rocket launcher can be deadly when you get too close to
  the explosions, so keep back!

1.6 What about those power-ups?

The powerups are located in crates that are scattered around the cities.
Use your fist, weapon, or vehicle to bust open the crate to reveal its
contents.

Body Armor
This armor can take 3 shots before it will be removed from your
  inventory.

Extra Life
This is in the form of a heart and well, I am sure you can guess what
  this does.

Get Outta Jail Free Card
If you get busted, this card will automatically get you released with
your Bonus Multiplier and all the weapons you had when you got busted.

Help!
This is not a power-up, but rather an informational item. You obtain this
and it will provide you with some rahter useful advice.

Kill Frenzy
These will be scattered around the city and when you obtain one of these,
a siren will alert and gives you unlimited ammo for an amount of time.
Your weapon will be an automatic rifle, and you have to get a certain
number of points in the time that the frenzy gives you and when you have
gotten that number of points, it will say that "You've Got It!" and you
get a chock full of points.

Police Bribe
  Instantly cancels your Wanted Level.

Speed Up
This will be in the shape of a lightning bolt and if you are running, you
will run faster, and if you are driving, you will drive faster (suprise!)

2. Information

2.1 Terminology

Bomb Shop
Drive in into one of these and a timer and explosive will be set on your
vehicle for $5000. You can then hit the fire key to activate the
countdown. There is a 5 second countdown, so hurry and get out of that
  car.

Bonus Multiplier
All points you obtain are multiplied by the Bonus Multiplier. The Bonus
Multiplier is increased after every mission you complete)

Docks
These are recognized by the yellow cranes used to transport vehicles to
a boat. You will get money for the quality and type of car you put under
the crane. Be sure to get out of the car before the crane picks it up.
Refer to the car list for the prices for each of them.

Gouranga!
Gouranga is where you kill all of the Hare Krishnas at once or at a high
rate of speed, either by driving over them or killing them with a weapon.
You will gain a lot of points and "GOURANGA!" appearing on your screen.
Although, then cops will be on your ass like white on rice.

Hare Krishna
Monks who dress in orange uniforms and walk in straight lines around the
city. As they walk around the city, they chant and they usually hang
around the edges of buidlings or near or in the parks.

Hospital
Everytime you are killed, you automatically restart at a hospital.

Mission Arrow
A little yellow arrow that indicates the direction of your target for
each job. But don't take it too seriously.

Pager
The boss occasionally pages you with messages on share prices, cars,
hints, tips, and jobs. Press the F7 key to repeat the last pager message
  you received.

Pay Phone
Use this to receive missions. When there is a call for you a red arrow
will appear in front of the phone and you will hear ringing. Just walk
over the phone to answer it.

Police Department
Everytime you are busted, you automatically restart at a police
  department.

Respray Shop
Useful area to elude the police. You drive in into one of these and your
car color (although it won't be noticeable) and license plate will be
changed. Your Wanted Level will then disappear. Your pager will alert you
telling you that everything has been changed. But, there IS a fee.

Wanted Level
As more crimes you commit, the more cops want you. The Wanted Level is
determined by 1-4 cops that are displayed on the top of your screen. When
4 cops are shown, you are the most wanted.

2.2 Multi-Playing

GTA offers you with two different options of multi-playing:

DOS
You first must choose a network type from setup. This can be either IPX,
  serial or modem.

For IPX, you must choose a socket number. This can be any number as long
as allof the players choose the same number.

For MODEM, you are going to need to set up a phone number to dial (if you
are the on dialing), the COM port to where your modem is connected, and
the setup strings for your modem. The COM port will usually be COM2 for
an external modem, and COM3 or COM4 for an internal modem. If you are not
sure about your ports, then check the configuration on your PC. The
default setup strings should be just fine as long as you have a standard
Hayes-compatible modem. If your modem doesn't seem to work with DOS GTA,
you might find it easier to use the Windows version.

For SERIAL, you only need to set up the COM port which your serial cable
is connected to. This should be a 3-wire null-modem cable.

When the network configuration is set up, all the players should then
launch the required version of GTA.

Note: If one player chooses low-color mode, then all the other players
must play in low color mode as well. When GTA starts up, one player
should choose "Gather Network" and the others should then choose "Join
Network". All of the players should then choose a character, the gatherer
can then choose the game type.

In a MODEM game, the joiner will be making the call and the gatherer will
be receiving it. In a SERIAL or MODEM game, the game will start as soon
as the two players are connected.

In an IPX game, the game will start when four players are connected, or
when the gatherer starts the game.

Windows 95
The Windows version of GTA uses DirectX DirectPlay for communications.
Unlike the DOS version, the network type is not set up in advance.
Instead, it must be set up each time you play a game. Bitch ain't it?

Like the DOS version, one player must elect to be the gatherer by
choosing Gather Network, and the rest must choose Join Network.

Once this is done, amd the characters and game type have been selected,
as in the DOS version, the players are presented with a list of network
types. The types available will depend on the DirectX drivers which you
have installed. In most cases, the options available will be IPX, TCP/IP,
  SERIAL and MODEM.

For a SERIAL game, a dialogue box will appear where you must specify your
COM port and speed options. The COM port should be the port to which your
serial cable is connected. For a Windows game, this must be a 5/7-wire
null-modem cable. Both players must choose the same speed options.

For a TCP/IP game (like over the Internet) the gatherer's computer will
be the host. On the joiners screens, a dialogue box will appear where
you must specify the IP address of the host. The gatherer can find out
his IP address by running "winipcfg" from the Run command on the Windows
  Start menu.

Note: The packet size and speed of TCP/IP is not well-suited to GTA, and
this communication type is not recommeneded.

For a MODEM game, the joiner must specify the phone number to dial. This
option will work only if you have a modem installed in Windows.

Once the communications options are made, the gatherer must create a
session. This session can be any name. When the joiner computers connect,
they will display a list of sessions available. Select the session you
want, as soon as the maximum number of players (4) are ready or the
gatherer starts the game, the game will start.

There are two ways to play when you play either as a gatherer or joiner:

  Deathmatch
A Deathmatch involves the killing of every other player any way
possible. There's a choice of two ways to win a Deathmatch: By Score or
By Kills; use the arrow keys to set the score of kills or competing
players. The first person to acquire the required score or kills wins.

  Cannonball Run
A Cannonball Run is simply an illegal street race through a series of
    checkpoints.

2.3 Stories

The following are submissions by GTA gamers. These little stories are
events that occured maybe during missions or during average anarchy:

Submitted by "aspinall" <aspinall@lineone.net>
"I once was being chased by the cops when I saw a Beast GTS at the side
of the road. I climbed in but to my surprise I could drive the car
even though I was actually standing in the road. I went back and
    unfortunatley ran myself over."

"One time I was just siting around blowing up cars with my machine gun
and this ambulance came flying around the corner and hit a pedestrian.
The ambulance stopped the guy came out and helped the guy he hit, it was
    hilarious!"

"Here is what I do for fun to annoy cops. Go to either San Andreas or
Vice City. Now, get some cops on you then go find a place where you can
go upstairs and on rooftops. Without destroying the car, truck or
whatever you used to run away from the cops, park it in front of the
stairs making sure the only way to get onto the roof is by jumping over
the vehicle. The cop will find you but just keep trying to get around
the vehicle, he will never jump it thus stay there and he will never
    catch you.

These two fun things can only be done in Vice City. Here is the way to
get the tank, it is very hard to explain. When you start out go get
your gun and the car. Now go straight up and look for a fenced in base
with a tank in it. Its just Noth East from where you start. Now find
the motorcycle that looks like a Harley, not the super bike. Next go to
the right of the fenced in base until you see grass and trees. Go there
and go left behind the first building, you should hit a ramp and fly on
top of the building in the base. Hit the breaks as soon as you hit the
building. Get off the bike and get into the tank. Go down and you will
see that the fence open up for you. You can run over any car, truck,
bus, bike, people and you can shoot while the kill frenzy is on.

The second thing I like to do in Vice City is fight the gang. (CAUTION!
There are about 7 of them and they are all loaded with machine guns, so
be prepared.) Get your guns and go to South West Little Dominica. On
the map there is a fenced in place, it looks like a basketball court,
and is near a Spray Shop. When you find it you WILL be shot at and
someone will say something like "Get out of my hood..." Have fun. The
easiest way to kill all of them real quick is with the carbomb, but that
is no fun, you need a gun fight. Sometimes you can sneak into it and
shoot them while their back is turned."

"Ok, so I get in the Police Yard in San Andreas, by sliding under a
semi, and I'm there, killin pigs and everything, and suddenly, I see
them coming from BEHIND me. I'm like WHAT? So I go n check it out, and
they're droppin over the fence. Ya know, at the side? Where the road and
the fence meet? Heh, so they keep droppin from there...it was craaazy. I
finnaly commited suicide, seeing how I wasn't gonna get out."

"Never shoot a Rocket Launcher unless you're sure you're gonna hit your
target. I got outta my car with a Rocket Launcher with the game tied at
1 kill for each player, and I was thinking "easy win, he's still in his
car"... I shot my Rocket Launcher and missed him. He turned around and
started driving straight at me. I didn't think to jump over his car at
the time because I figured I'd just kill him with the Rocket
Launcher... to my surprise, the damn thing wouldn't fire because, I
guess, the first Rocket was still soaring through the air somewhere. All
of a sudden, SPLAT. My first loss (not first death... just first
    overall loss).

one of the overhead walk ways that cross the streets while the cops kept
running and shooting civilians while trying to hit me. I also got one
cop car to kill two cops that were trying to chase me by running over
them. I wasn't even driving the cops were."

"i was in the tequla slamma again with suck my rocket and i had level 4
cops all over me... And you know how tequila slammer can have up to 12
or so (yah i've seen 12 blow up cop cars around me once). Well i was in
my trusty penetrator (gotta love this car) and here i come down the
intersection. Right as i reach the crossroads of the intresection this
cop decides to cut me off. He is too slow (im going full speed) and he
brakes and accelerates behind me (all of this occuring just in that
crossroad of the intresction). Then all of a sudden another cop coming
from the left side smacks right into him. and someone coming from
opposite my direction hits him from behind. man i tell ya, that was one
hell of a cop crash. he didn't blow up, although that would have been
    awesome."

"Alright, i got a few funny things that have happened while playing GTA,
one is, in Liberty city on the 6 lane highway i was fleeing the cops,
when i saw a better, more desirable car, so i got out and when i was
pulling out of there, i saw one cop slam into tha back of my car with
his car, and then he got out, then a second cop ran over the first
cop...it was pretty damn funny, so i shot the second cop and made off
    with the 2nd cop's car!

Another time i was running (away from the cops) across that same six
lane highway on foot and a cop pulled in from the right side of my
screen and stopped in the road, and got out (i was about 5 feet from the
passenger side of his car), he went around the front of his car and i
went around the back, so now he was on the passenger side and i was next
to the drivers door, so i got in and made off with the car HEHE!!!

And yet anbother time I was in San Andreas and i Had stolen a fire
engine, and i spotted some monks (the orange guys that walk in a line,
whatever they are) and those monks were on a ledge (about 8 feet lower
than mine) right next to the road i was on , and i effectivly dropped
the fire engine off the roadway and down on top of them, squashing all
but a few and setting many more pedestrians on fire hehehehe...!"

obviously I was been chased by loads of cops. I was driving a tanker and
one cop car kept on slamming into the back of me.The cop car was
seriously damaged whe I got out of the tanker. But out of his car came
the cop, he took a shot at me, missing and hitting his car thus blowing
it up right in his face BOOM and htew cop was dead."

"So I just got GTA and I was trying it out. I was looking around and I
saw an ambulance loading in. So I ran over the medics and stole the
ambulance. I hopped over the bridge with the hole in it and then was
chased by a cop. I stopped, trapped the cop, killed him with a machine
gun, and then stole his car. Then after it was on it's last breath, I
got out and blew up the car. After four cops were chasing me, I found a
fire truck and stole it. I eventually was at the docks, knocked two cop
cars into the water before falling in myself. This event made me like
    Grand Theft Auto forever."

"I was just walking around blowing up cars, you know, minding my own
business, when I heard the sirens of a fire truck. Fire trucks are one
of my favorite cars. So I start to look for it when suddenly the
freaking thing darts around the corner and runs right over me, smashing
me to bits! It really made me mad. I thought cars slow down and stop
when something (or someone) is in their path. That will teach me to
jump in from of a fire truck to stop it."

"I got sick of blowing up the freakin' police building, so I took the
fragile tanker and put the sucker on the train tracks- so sue me. It
blew up still, of course, but on the tracks and not under the police
station. Also, I kinda planned it so the train would be rolling in as I
was at a safe distance away. Thus, the tanker exploded. You would think
the train would be takin out with it, but no- it just plowed through it.
I was pissed, so when the passengers began exited the train, I found
the closest car I could and hopped in it. I drove close to them, but
didn't hit them. You know when you drive to close to a pedestrian, they
get scared, and run away? Well, I scared them alright. And about 15 of
those bastards ran away- and back towards the train. But they couldn't
get on the train, they could just step around the tracks. Those suckers
got fried by the electrical tracks and gave me a couple thousand points
    each.

I was gettin chased by about three of four cops, which really ain't
much, and a road-block was coming up. I knew that my car was already
"buzzing" and ready to go, so I put on the emergency brake and swerved
into a U-turn and stopped. One of the cops couldn't stop in time, and
ran over one of his fellow assholes that was about to shoot at me from
the blockade. I got 10,000 points because a cop ran over one of his own
    men: asshole!! Ha-ha!!!

I was gettin chased by a cop after making a "Gouranga!" with those
parading pricks dressed in an orange garb (who the fuck are they,
anyway?) and decided to outdrive the bugger. I slammed the emergey
brake, but I went swerving between some trees and got stuck. The cop
hopped out of his car and went around to the front side. But, to my
luck, the car was going to fast to stop when he wanted to cross in
front of it. So, basically, the shithead ran himself over with his own
    damn car!! What a dick!!

I need a break from doing the missions, so I grabbed the nearest Mundano
and headed north. I picked up the machine-gun, circed around to get the
get outta jail free key (the one by the Mundano that you get in the
first phone's mission), and headed south-west to get armor (from the box
under the divided bridge). I cut off a school bus and got in. I stopped
in front of the phones in South Park (not that cool show- the park) and
cut off a tanker. Where are these the freakin huge tanks comin from? I
dunno. Don't care. I just tossed the trucker out and crammed the two
monsters together. I went lookin around for more giants to pile up. You
know how if you never start a mission, the arrow always points to the
phones? Well, I used that for direction to know where the pile is. I
must've had fifteen giants by the time the demo was about 100 seconds
from ending. So I took the machine-gun, and blew up the closest tanker.
The chain reaction took a long time, but all of the giants were in
flames in a matter of seconds. I probably took out fifty people,
including a near-by police unit, and the ambulances and fire-trucks
were there in no time. Hmmm . . not much time to do a mission. . .what
should I do? Hmmm: take out the ambulances and firetrucks? Good idea!!
I haven't seen so much carnage and as big an inferno as that!! Cop after
fireman after ambulance-asshole blown-away with the beautiful goddamn
bloodtrails for an even greater sense of pride!! Ahhh!

I'm sure you've done something like this, but I'll say it anyway: a cop
swerves in front of you with his driver's side away. He hops out and as
soon as he does you push his car over him and Vwallah! Cop pancake!!!"

Thank you all for all your great submissions!

3. Conclusion

3.1 I wish to thank...

Grand Theft Auto is a great game and there are a lot more enthusiasts and
fans of it than I had first anticipated. From the beginning to where I
tried out the demo version and now to the full version, I have ran across
many GTA fans that I think should be remembered.

First, I'd wish to thank...

The entire staff at GOURANGA!. They have been very helpful in providing the
best GTA information and actually including my guide annoucement on their
site. ;)

A good friend that goes by the name of Guy. We both had a lot of the same
interests in GTA and what coresponded with it. Guy, you're a kickass dude.

DMA Design, ASC Games and BMG Interactive for bringing the game to us! Good
job guys and good luck on GTA 2! (but that's another guide)

The entire staff and writers of PC Games, which in my personal opinion is
the best damn gaming magazine out there. You guys are really kicking ass.

Everyone that sent in a GTA story. They were exceptionally humuorous and
excellent!

And anyone else that I might have forgotten. Everyone of you are really
terrific.

And to that, I conclude this guide. "Life goes by pretty fast, if you don't
stop and look around once in a while, you're gonna miss it." - Ferris
Bueller's Day Off.
