Welcome to E-Racer/2!
!line
!line
This program is designed to quickly scan all of your hard disk
drives, and locate files duplicated in any subdirectory. It can handle large networks,
HPFS longnames, FAT, NTFS on peer networks, you name it! Once you have a list of duplicate
files on screen, E-Racer/2 allows you to manually select and delete unneeded files. E-Racer/2
does NOT automatically delete duplicate files - that would be disasterous!
!line
!line
E-Racer/2 can locate duplicate files, even when you change the name! This is great for files
you download from the Internet, that have been renamed by the uploader. E-Racer/2 can locate
duplicate JPEG, MIDI, GIF, ZIP, Etc. files, no matter what the name is!
!line
!line
E-Racer/2 can be used to compare the contents of two subdirectory trees. in cases where you
don't want to scan an entire drive. See also:

Paying for and entering the
Registration information we send you will enable E-Racer/2 to delete more than 10 files
in a session. You can also view the current Registration information, if any.

To register E-Racer/2, select Help item found on the main menu and then click
Register. The registration dialog box will appear. Enter your First, Middle initial
and Last name exactly as it appears on the registration form mailed to you
after you paid. Next, enter the serial number and the registration number
exactly as found on the form. If you make a mistake, E-Racer/2 will not allow you
to save the infomation and you will remain stuck in "demo" mode. In demo mode
you can continue to use E-Racer/2, but you cannot delete more than 10 files in
a session without rescanning.

If you are successful, E-Racer/2 will record your registration information, and
start full-feature mode.

If you ever do a clean reinstall OS/2, or trash your OS/2 INI files, it may be necessary to
re-register E-Racer/2. Simply re-enter the information found on the registration
form we mailed you.

E-Racer/2 can be run from the command linecommand line or by manually navigating through menus (See FileFile,
RunRun, SettingsSettings and QuitQuit).
!Line
!Line
Command line mode configures E-Racer/2 and begins Search/Scan.
!line
!line
In manual mode, you may start Search/Scan mode at any time using pulldown menus.
!line
!line
Once a Search/Scan has completed, you are presented with a picklist of duplicate files. You may delete any duplicate files by moving the
highlight bar to the desired filename and pressing the Delete button on your keyboard. You may also "mark" more than one file by pressing the
spacebar as you move through the list. A checkmark appears on each file marked for deletion. Press the Delete key to delete all checkmarked
files. Press Escape to exit the picklist, but note that once you exit, you will have to go through the Search/Scan step again if you want to start
deleting files again.
!line
!line
Warnings:
!line
!line
E-Racer/2 allows you to delete just about any file - including files that are vital to system operation. It is quite possible - even probable - that
if you delete every duplicate file that shows up in E-Racer/2's picklist, one or more of your applications or even your operating system itself will stop
working. This is a very sharp and dangerous tool. It WILL hurt you, if you use it improperly! As with many operating system commands, like DELETE and FORMAT, you should educate yourself before
using E-Racer/2. We strongly recommend that you make a backup of all files that will be exposed to E-Racer/2!
!line
!line
IDK, Inc. cannot be held responsible if you delete files that are critical to you. You must know ahead of time which files can be deleted
and which cannot. We strongly advise creating a full backup of your workstation (and network, if applicable) prior to using the delete-file
feature of E-Racer/2.

!Topic Wild Card Arguments
!noindex
This field contains a list of wildcards used to accept or reject files for comparison. You can enter up
to 32 Include/Exclude wildcards. If a given file matches one of your wildcards, it will be added to the
catalog for comparison with other files. If a file does not match a wildcard in this list, it will be
ignored and not compared against the other files. Most users will use a single wildcard set to "*.*".
This will cause E-Racer/2 to accept (include) all excluding none.
!line
!line
You may want to use the Exclude feature to lock out files that you really don't care about. A prime
example is your Netscape CACHE directory. This directory contains hundreds of GIF and JPG files
used to draw the buttons and artwork for your favorite web pages. Netscape does a pretty good job
of cleaning this directory up, so it may save you some time if you exclude it from the scan.
!line
!line
To exclude the CACHE directory, enter the following:
!line
!line
         ~?:\netscape\cache\*.*
!line
!line
In the example above, the Tilde (~) character tells E-Racer/2 to Exclude any files that match the
wildcard. The \netscape\cache can be on any drive, since we used a question mark (?) in the Drive
Letter position of the wildcard path.
!line
!line
Other clever tricks you can do with wildcard file matching:
!line
!line
[a-m]*.* <- Any files beginning with letters A-M
!line
[a-z,~ux]*.* <- Any files beginning with a any letter except X or U
!line
*.[~q]? <- Any files except those that match *.?Q?
!line
    foo[abc]*.* <- Files of FOO?*.* where '?' is A,B or C
!line
    foo["abc"]*.* <- Same as above.
!line
    foo[a-c]*.* <- Same as above.
!line
    test{0-9}.* <- Files of TEST0.* through TEST9999.*
!line
x{}z.* <- Filenames beginning with X and ending with Z
!line
x{0123456789}z.* <- Same as above, only with numbers between X and Z.
!line
("read")*.* <- Filenames that contain the text "READ"
!line
!line
undocumented DOS wildcards (eg. FILENAME = FILENAME.* and .EXT = *.EXT).
!line
!line
Filenames or wildcards can be in quotes (eg. "*.*" is equivalent to *.*).

!Topic Look In Zips
!noindex
This control tells E-Racer/2 to look inside Zip files (or not) for duplicate file names. If dupe files
are found, E-Racer/2 will let you delete individual duplicate files inside the Zip.
;----------------------
!TOPIC Zip Program
!NOINDEX
Select the desired ZIP / UNZIP program. E-Racer/2 is compatible with the OS/2 version of PkZip v2.5 and InfoZip. InfoZip is Freeware, PKZip is
shareware (I think). You must have the EXEs for one or both on your path for E-Racer/2 to work. E-Racer/2 is compatible with native OS/2 Zip programs
only. No Windoze, or DOS versions please!
;----------------------
!Topic Graphics Compare
!noindex
This control tells E-Racer/2 to compare GIF files using Palette Comparison or standard Signature comparison.
!line
!line
Palette Comparison can be thought of as a fuzzy logic comparison of GIF files. If two or more GIFs use similar
color schemes, they will be marked as duplicates. This helps find GIFs that are similar to one another, but are not
exact duplicates. This includes some cropped, rotated and zoomed images. This also has the effect of under certain circumstances,
marking files that are completely unrelated as dupes! Use Palette Comparison with care! Use the Graphics Viewer to view each GIF
prior to deletion or you may accidently delete a unique GIF file by accident.
!line
!line
Signature Comparison of GIF files is the most foolproof. Only exact byte-for-byte duplicate files will be marked as dupes, but if a single
pixel in the image is different in an otherwise identical file, E-Racer/2 will ignore it.
;----------------------
!TOPIC Prev Button
!NOINDEX
Saves the current settings and returns to Setup Page 1.
;----------------------
!TOPIC Database Name
!NOINDEX
Enter the name of the database file to store your E-Racer/2 file catalog. If this file does not exist, and R/W mode is selected,
a new file will be created. Use databases for very large hard disk drives or networks. A database will greatly speed up
the time E-Racer/2 spends Analyzing files. On small disk drives, it may be faster to not use a database.
!line
!line
Insure that there is plenty of disk space available on the drive used for Database files. If you scan a very large number of files,
the database file can grow quite large.
;----------------------
!topic File Browser
!noindex
Use the File dialog to select a file or enter a new filename. Use the File field to hand type in the path and name of a file.
!line
!line
Use the mouse to select an existing drive, path and filename from the picklists.
;----------------------
!topic Database Mode
!noindex
DB Mode works in conjunction with the Database NameDatabase Name field.
!line
!line
If you select No DB, E-Racer/2 will scan the drives/paths you select and do a smart analysis of the files looking for dupes. Use this mode
for quick scans of small to medium sized drives or networks.
!line
!line
If you select R/O, E-Racer/2 will open the database file named in Database NameDatabase Name. It will use the data to skip analyzing files that
were previously found. This can vastly speed up scans of large drives and networks, especially if there are many large files or Zips. In this mode,
E-Racer/2 will NOT update the database file if it runs across modified files.
!line
!line
If you select R/W, E-Racer/2 will create or refresh the file named in the
Database NameDatabase Name field. If E-Racer/2 has to create this file,
it will take far longer than "No DB" mode, because EVERY file found will be
analyzed - a time consuming process! It is worthwhile to run this mode once
for large networks, and then periodically as the information in the database
becomes obsolete. If you use R/W mode to update an existing Database file,
only files that were modified or created since the last Database R/W scan
will be analyzed. This does not take long at all, if few of the
files have changed on your drive or network.
!line
!line
Use the Database NameDatabase Name field to store/select multiple databases if you change drive letter combinations for scanning. Make customized
databases containg the various combinations of drive letters you scan for optimum performance.
;---------------------
!TOPIC Association Button
!NOINDEX
This button pops up the list of file suffix associations for a given Viewer or Player. You can associate files with the GIF suffix to PMView, for example.
PMView will automatically pop up and display a potential duplicate file when you press F10, the View File button.
;----------------------
!TOPIC Graphics Viewer
!NOINDEX
Enter the path and name of the Graphics File Viewer you wish to use. Use the file VB.EXE if you don't have PMView. VB.EXE is pretty bad, but it comes
free with OS/2 Warp. We strongly advise downloading and registering PMView, the finest graphics file viewer around.
;----------------------
!TOPIC Text Viewer
!NOINDEX
Enter the path and name of the Text File viewer you wish to use. Use E.EXE or WORKS.EXE if you don't have a native OS/2 word processor on your workstation.
E-Racer/2 will use the Text Viewer to show you the contents of Text and Documents, when you press the View File Button.
;----------------------
!TOPIC Binary Viewer
!NOINDEX
Enter the path and name of the Binary File viewer you wish to use. We recommend KON.EXE, a shareware file viewer that can handle large binary files.
E-Racer/2 will use the Binary Viewer to show you the contents of any files you specify in the Associations list, as well as any files without Associations
assigned.
;----------------------
!TOPIC Sound Player
!NOINDEX
Enter the path and name of the Sound File Player you wish to use. Use the file AB.EXE that comes with OS/2 Warp. You may replace the Sound Player
if you have an alternative OS/2 player that handles WAV, MOD, MIDI, AU, etc files.
