Toolkit contents
================
The translation toolkit consists of the following bits:-

\API The api folder contains maulclass.h, the definitions required by all
resource files for Maul Publisher

\BIN This folder contains a selection of programs required as a minimum for
building the various resources.

\ENGLISH This folder contains an english copy of the resources to
translate. Please do not translate these files, copy the folder to a new name
instead, see below - "Create a new language".

\SRC This folder contains all the resource definitions and empty dll projects
that are used to build the final output.

MAKE.INC This PM Make include file contains all the common build instructions.

MAKEALL_EN.PMK This PM Make make file is for the english resources. It is
provided as a template so that you can copy it for another language. This
makefile makes all the resources. You can also make individual resource items
by running maketool.cmd and opening the required make file.

MAKEZIP_EN.PMK This PM Make make file is for the english resources. It is
provided as a template so that you can copy it for another language. This
makefile packs all the files and makes a zip archive.

MAKETOOL.CMD This batch file calls PM Make with the correct parameters. Start
PM Make with this command, and then use the open command in PM Make to open
the makefile you want to make.

MAKETOOL.ICO Just makes MAKETOOL.CMD look nice.

TRANSLATE_INSTRUCTIONS This file.

Installation
============
*Step 1:- Install the OS/2 Toolkit on your computer. This is required for the
<os2.h> header file included in the resource files, as well as the dialog
resource compiler rc.exe. You do not require a C compiler to create these
files.

    NOTE: The OS/2 Toolkit also contains the linker link386.exe, and the
    dialog editor. These are essential in order to ensure that your translated
    text strings fit into the dialogs provided. Note that the dialog editor
    cannot create the actual dialog templates required as these contain a
    number of custom controls and their associated control style flags.

*Step 2:- Open the file 'make.inc', and change the core settings for the make
file. Once you are satisfied that the paths and names setup here are correct
you can delete the warning message from the start of the file.

DRIVE, where the *.nls folders are created. These folders can be where Maul is
installed, in which case you can immediately access any new languages that you
create. Notice the trailing backslash!

MAULROOT, where Maul is currently installed, this parameter is used to copy
myspell dictionaries to the current installation. Notice the trailing
backslash!

PROJECTROOT, root folder for the language kit. This is the full path to where
this file is installed. There is NO trailing backslash on this one!!!

SYSTEMRESOURCECOMPILER, this must point to the resource compiler used to re-make
the ini files, and it is usually found in 'c:\os2\rc.exe', if c: is your boot drive.

CreatePacksHere, where the language files are packed. You should probably set
this to a new folder as this is where the zip archives end up! In the example
below, I have used a derived path, which resolves to "d:\runtime\out".

^vars()
    {
        DRIVE = "d:\runtime\";
        MAULROOT = "d:\runtime\";
        PROJECTROOT = "d:\Language";
        CreatePacksHere = $DRIVE"out";
    }

*Step 3:-
Note:- If you are using the /h command line parameter to test maul in a folder
other than it's default run path, you will need to copy all the files from the
default run path to the new folder before proceeding.

So, assume maul is installed in 'c:\maul', and you want to run it in
'c:\test'(, you have set DRIVE="c:\test\";). First, copy all the files and
folders from 'c:\maul' to 'c:\test'. This will create a copy of all the files
in 'c:\maul\bin' and 'c:\maul\etc'.

You can now run Maul like this:-
maul /hc:\test

File types
==========
*.pmk - pmmake make files
No changes apart from the makeall_xx.pmk file. Here you must set the language.

*.insl, *.insr - install scripts require translating
Mostly, you just need to change the strings, but you also need to change the
language setting, and you may need help to get these working correctly once
the text is translated.

*.dlg
These files are dialog files. They are used to create the dialogs. Note that
the ~ character gets converted to an underscore and a keyboard shortcut. This
means that the same underscored letter should not be used twice in the same
dialog.

*.rc
Resource files contain menus, simple string tables, and keyboard shortcut
data.

*.txt - compiled using msgc
These files contain text strings used to print messages. There are parameters
like "%1s" here, you can change the order of the parameters if it makes more
sense, just don't change the numbers or anything else on the parameters
themselves. If you are not sure what the parameters get exchanged for - please
ask!!!

*.scr - inf scripts that get converted to help files
These are the help source files. You should edit these, and not the *.inf
files that are generated from them. The *.scr extension has no particular
significance, the files are passed through ipfcprep.exe before conversion into
help files.

Please note that if you follow the list of files below, you can't really go
wrong.

Create a new language
=====================
*Step 1:- Copy the folder 'ENGLISH' and all of its contents to a new folder
with the name of the new language ('Espagnol', for example). Make sure the
language name used is the same throughout.

*Step 2:- Copy 'makeall_en.pmk' to a new make file. The name is not important,
but it is best if you follow the naming convention for now (for spanish call
it makeall_es.pmk, for example). Do the same for makezip_en.pmk.

*Step 3:- Edit the new makefiles to show the name of the new language folder.
If you are following the examples, this would be the following settings:-

^vars
    {
        LANGUAGE = "Espagnol";
        ARCHIVENAME = makeall_es;
        THISFILE = makeall_es.pmk;
        InstallScript = $LANGUAGE".insl";
    }

This preamble message is output into the packing list produced for the
language pack. If you wish you can translate this text into your new language:-

^actions()
    {
        preamble =
                @echo The packing list below is for the Maul Publisher $LANGUAGE language pack. > $DESTPACKLIST
                @echo This is the complete list of files in the language pack. This file was >> $DESTPACKLIST
                @echo derived from a DIR /n /o:n batch file. If any files are missing please >> $DESTPACKLIST
                @echo let me know. >> $DESTPACKLIST
            ;
    }

Start translating
=================
Start with the installer. These instructions show the example of the language 'Espagnol'

Switch to the language folder ( \ESPAGNOL copied from \ENGLISH), that you
should have created before you start.

*Step 1:- Open the 'install' folder. Rename the following filenames to match the name of
the language folder
 Re
[ ] CPYRIGHT to whatever "copyright" means in your language.
                    The renamed and translated file will be copied to 'maul\docs' later.

[ ] ENGLISH.RC to ESPAGNOL.RC, watch out, you will also need to change the name
                    of the copyright file!:-
                    "RESOURCE    RT_INSTDATA     ID_HELPFILE     CPYRIGHT"

[  ] ENGLISH.DLG        to ESPAGNOL.DLG
[  ] ENGLISH.TXT        to ESPAGNOL.TXT
[  ] ENGLISH.SCR        to ESPAGNOL.SCR

*Step 2:- Translate installer files:-

Please feel free to use the checkboxes provided as a record of what has been done.
The name 'ESPAGNOL' is used for the example given (see above).

These items are last because you can use many of the translations from
previous documents in the list. This is because the tables handler re-uses
much of the same funtionality developed for earlier handlers.

*Step 4:- Modify accelerator key entries:-
You will need to alter some keyboard shortcuts if they no longer make sense in
the new language.

[a] The menu item shortcuts are defined as a '~'character in OS/2 and as a
'&' character in Windows. The following character will appear with an
underscore in the menu's. The end user can use the Alt+<character> combination
to access the menu items. Each menu item should have a unique underscored
character (or NO underscored character) within its own menu only. Each item on
the menu bar should also have a unique underscore character.

[b] A second set of keyboard shortcuts are defined in the RCDATA, IDACC_???
tables. These appear as shortcut descriptions in the menu items, in the
'_Page' menu for example:-

"_Margins and grids...    Ctrl+M"

The user can press Alt+P, and then Alt+M to navigate the menu items, or
Ctrl+M to directly access the dialog.

In...

[  ] maul\MAUL.RC

...you should make sure that Alt+P is defined as locked in the static locks
table IDACC_STATLOCK:-

RCACCLOCK_LOCK | FALT, 'P', 0,       //lock out 'Page'

As these menus will be different for each language ('Page' is 'Seite' in
German, and this means you have to lock the S instead), you need to modify the
static locks table to ensure that the end user cannot have the same shortcut
twice. Luckily, this only concerns the main menu bar, and not the submenus.

[c] If you really want to go to the trouble of doing it, you can alter all
the default shortcuts. You would need to change the entries in every *.rc
file, and alter the text in the help manuals to match. Please use Maul's
keyboard shortcut editor in order to make sure that you don't use the same
shortcut in conflicting modules, and make sure that you have correctly set the
static locks table first.

see API\maulclass.h for valid key combinations.

*Step 5:- Translate screenshots and diagrams:-
Some of this needs actual translation, much of it is just a question of
creating new screen shots. If you prefer, please ask me to help you prepare
the screenshots.

Common Language control files
=============================
There are a small number of language control files which will require
modifying. As these are part of every distribution, regardless of language,
you will need to let me know what changes/additions you have made.

The files concerned are found in <the path where Maul is installed>\etc, and
they are CODEPAGE.LCI, DATECONV.LCI, and MYSPELL.DLS.

*Step 1:- CODEPAGE.LCI
This file doesn't really need changing. It just lists the codepages. If you
think that this file must change, please let me know, because I may have to
alter the way that maul loads this file!

*Step 2:- DATECONV.LCI
This file determines how date strings are shown. The syntax used for this file
is shown in the texthandler manual under:- edit menu-> control text->
DATCONV.LCI data format. If your own language is not represented, please add
it and send me a copy of the altered file.

*Step 3:- MYSPELL.DLS
See 'Managing dictionaries and codepages' in the spellcheck handler manual.
This file is used to access myspell dictionaries according to the corrent
language. If your own language is not represented, please add it and send me a
copy of the altered file.

Additional language pack install script
=======================================
The final steps to creating a new additional language pack ready for
distribution involve the modification of just 2 files.

Switch to the language folder ( \ESPAGNOL copied from \ENGLISH), that you
should have created before you start.

*Step 1:- Edit the make file maul.pmk
Look for the entries under **** Copy Documents ****.
During translation, some of the names of the documents will have changed. You
need to alter those names that have changed, and add any new file names you
may have created.
Under "^fileop($CreatePacksHere..." you will need to at least check the name
of 'readme.1st', because you should have changed this.
The file 'CPYRIGHT' should always be included.
WARNING:- Do not accidentally remove the ; from the ends of the filenames.

*Step 2:- Edit the script file. This file should be renamed to match the
language.
[  ] maul\DOCS\english.insl rename espagnol.insl, for example.

[ ] change all the instances of the word 'english' to the name of the new language.

[  ] for each <infobj> and <docobj> entry, translate the 3rd and 4th strings.
The 1st strings are the names of the files, and the 2nd strings are path
definitions. Valid definitions include:-
    [nlspath] = a folder whose name is $LANGUAGE.nls (for example 'espagnol.nls').
    [nlshelp] = a subfolder, '$LANGUAGE.nls/help'
    [nlsdocs] = a subfolder, '$LANGUAGE.nls/docs'
    [nlsinfo] = a subfolder, '$LANGUAGE.nls/inf'
The 3rd strings are the names of the shortcuts created on the desktop, the 4th
are the status messages shown by the installer as these objects are created.
You can create any other desktop objects you require.
The full syntax for the installer script engine can be found in the
'INSTALLSCRIPT.DOC' file.

Give yourself credit
====================
In the top of the main manual,

...\maul\HELP\MAUL.SCR

under the section

:i1 id=intro.About Maul Publisher
:artwork name='maul.bmp' align=center.

add the following text

:p.:hp2.Translation:ehp2.
:p.The following people are credited with the translation of this application:
:ul compact.
:li.Your Name: Translation of, correction ...
:li.Other Names: What they did...
:eul.

Make everything
===============
Make everything when you are done by running (following the example above)
[  ] maketool.cmd makeall_es.pmk
...and then...
[  ] maketool.cmd makezip_es.pmk

Install
=======
If the zip archive is unzipped into Maul Publishers install folder, you will
be able to install and test the new language immediately.

Take a holiday
==============
If you have translated all of that, you need it! :-)
