               Wordstar compatible Wordprocessor

for OS/2 and eCS November 2004

This archive file contains two programs:

***WSedit:*** Wordstar 4 like Freeware Editor which reads
Wordstar 4-7 and ASCII (ISO and IBM codepage) and writes
Wordstar 4 and ASCII format.

***WSformat:*** A Freeware/Shareware formatting and printing
program for Wordstar and WSedit files.

Running the two programs simultaneously offers you the look-
and-feel of a single program: "Write&Set".

Write&Set is a full-featured wordprocessing program with
spell checking, contents creation, footnotes, index, embedd
ing graphics and a lot of more. It is an alternative concept
of word processing for people who don't like Winword-like
programs. Word processing with Write&Set divides the job of
producing a document in two parts: editing unformatted text
and - later - formatting and printing. These two parts of
the job are done by separate programs: WSedit is the
'editor' and WSformat the 'typesetter'. This concept simpli
fies word processing and enables you compiling a single
document with hundreds of pages without any problems. Never
theless, both programs are designed to work together like
dialog windows in a single program.

WSformat is Freeware if you want to compile smaller
documents than 10 printed pages. For larger documents,
WSformat is Shareware. If you do not register WSformat and
wait a while, you are no more able to format documents which
are larger than 10 pages. This is the only Shareware limi
tation. You are allowed to send WSformat to friends or to a
publishing house for printing your formatted document. The
registration key rests on your computer. WSedit is a normal
Freeware.

This archive file contains a third program: the Hypermake
commandline compiler (www.hypermake.com). You can execute
this program from the WSformat menu (Make - RTF, Make -
HTML) to convert WS files to RTF (Rich text format) and HTML
(for web pages). The WSformat registration key can be also
used here.

----------Installation----------

Unpack the archive file to a new directory, e.g:
C:\Programs\WriteSet

The two programs WSedit and WSformat are now located in
subdirectories:
C:\Programs\WriteSet\WSedit C:\Programs\WriteSet\WSformat

Now simply run the INSTALL program in the WriteSet direc
tory. INSTALL creates file associations and program icons on
the desktop (and in the Windows Start Menu) for both
programs. INSTALL does not copy files.

If you use an old version of WSedit and WSedit crashes while
starting, please delete the WSedit.dta user settings file.

----------Usage-----------

WSedit is a text editor which can be used like other
editors. In addition to CUA editor commands like Ctrl-Ins
for "paste marked block into clipboard", WSedit supports all
Wordstar Ctrl Commands like Ctrl-KB "mark beginning of
block". To get an overview, press Ctrl-J. "Ctrl" is abbrevi
ated ^. If you read and write files with file extension TXT,
WSedit is an ASCII text editor. If you read and write files
with the extension WS or FMT, WSedit is compatible to the
Wordstar (DOS) file format.

The WSformat 'format' function reads the raw-text WS file
edited by WSedit and writes an FMT (formatted) file. The
"formatted file" makes a big difference to Latex: In Latex,
there's nothing between the raw text and the final printout.
In the FMT file, which can be also viewed using WSedit, the
right margin is now fixed, the page breaks are apparent, and
words at the end of the line which require hyphenation are
displayed accordingly. You are able to make final changes by
hand on the "formatted file", e.g. optimizing page breaks by
hand.

WSformat let you preview and print your FMT file.

---- The first steps -----

After running INSTALL, take a look at the WSedit and WSfor
mat help files. In the WSformat docu "Installation" chapter,
it is described how to make user and language specific sett
ings, e.g. loading the hyphenation algorithm for your
language. Both WSedit and WSformat documentations are avail
able in the WS file format, see DocuSrc directory. (WS files
with an "e" at the end refer to english, with a "g" to
german language.) You are encouraged to format, preview and
print these files.

---- Tutorial ------------

If you are not familiar with Write&Set, I recommend the
Tutorial. If you start WSformat for the very first time, the
Lesson 1 will be started automatically. Later, you can reach
lesson 1 from WSformat, menu item File - Select, and then
click to Lessons_English and then to 1_FormattingPrint
ing.ws.

------------------ WSedit 0.99 ------------------

New functionality/improvements in WSedit 0.99:

O Ctrl-QP (quick to last position) was missing. Now imple
   mented.
O Different window title text, dependent on having focus or
not (to get useful information in the Windows taskbar)
O Wheel mouse support for Windows
O full Drag and Drop in the Windows version (but with the
right, not the left mouse button!)
O better screen font support: all available fixed fonts can
be selected and are stored in the text file
   "edifonts.ini"
O Support of the "Write&Set TXT format" in File - Import,
   File - Export

Fixed Bugs: a few, not worth to mention

------------------ WSformat 0.99 ------------------

WSformat 0.99 adds some essential new functionality and
fixes some minor bugs.

Added functionality:

O improved preview for two-sided printouts (a document is
two-sided, if you use .HEL .HER or .FOL .FOR or .LR
(left-right mode, affects the header/footer line orien
   tation)).
O PgDn in preview on top of a page scrolls a page down,
   otherwise shows the next page
O new dot command .RF (Right Formatting) is like .RM (Right
Margin), but does not affect ^P@ (WSedit ^PZ) right-
   orientated lines.
O .FG on/off (format graphics) let you omit inserting empty
   lines for graphics while formatting
O Creating Contents: you can turn off the automatic
contents line recognition in the settings notebook, so
only the lines with prefixed ".CT" (content) gets part of
   the table of contents
O Three new dot commands .HH Hard Line Height, .SH Soft
Line Height and .EH Empty Line Height let you specify
line height more acccurate than .LH. (.LH sets all three
values simultaneously.) This extension enables you to
define different line heights within paragraphs and
between paragraphs. Of course, you won't see correct page
breaks anymore when using original Wordstar instead of
   WSedit.
O PDF creation support: If you select Make - PDF file,
WSformat prints the document to a virtual printer which
you have selected in the settings notebook, page PDF. The
output goes to a Postscript (PS) file instead of a
   printer port.
O PDF creation support: After finishing "printing" to the
PS file, WSformat appends PDFmarks to the PS file. These
marks contain document information holding in dot
commands: .TI (Title) .KY (Keywords), .AU (Author) and
   .SU (Subject).
O PDF creation support: full-featured PDF content window
with chapter headings where the reader can navigate.
O PDF creation support: Step-by-step instruction for using
WSformat together with the free Ghostscript package
O in addition to the WS file format, ASCII text file
support for unformatted files: "Write&Set TXT format"
O Colored fonts (via font definition file).
O running WSformat via commandline arguments (formatting,
   printing, conditional defines)
O Shareware limitation set down to formatting 10 pages.
