                       For OS/2 Presentation Manager

QVT/PM is a DEC VT220/102/52 terminal emulation and communications program
which has been created to run under OS/2 as a true Presentation Manager
application.

In addition to terminal emulation, QVT/PM offers file transfer facilities
using three popular protocols - Kermit, XMODEM, and ZMODEM, as well
as auto-dial and auto-login capabilities. Since QVT/PM is an OS/2 applic-
ation, these operations, once started, may be sent to the background, thereby
permitting the use of the machine for other tasks.

This document does not constitute full user documentation, but it does tell
you what you need to know to use and register QVT/PM.

Hardware/Software Requirements
-

QVT/PM requires OS/2 Standard Edition version 1.1 with Presentation
Manager. It is compatible with OS/2 Extended Edition as long as the
standard COM device driver is used, not the ACDI device drivers.

The only keyboard supported by QVT/PM is the 101-key 'Enhanced' keyboard.
This is the keyboard most frequently found on computers which are powerful
enough to run OS/2, and it also the one which is best suited to emulate
the DEC LK201 keyboard.

If you intend to use the modem-control features of QVT/PM, you must have a
Hayes or Hayes-compatible modem. The modem should be set up to allow computer
control of the DTR signal; consult the modem user's manual for instructions
on how to do this.

Files
-

The files included in this archive are:

        QVT_PM.EXE The executable program file
        DEFAULT.VT A model configuration file
        READ.ME This document

Notes on Operation
-

The QVT/PM screen contains a standard menu bar across the top of the screen.
There are five pull-down menus which are used to operate the program:

File Perform file operations, e.g. load and save
Edit For moving data to and from the Clipboard
        Setup Configure QVT/PM operating parameters
        Modem Control a Hayes-compatible modem
        Transfer Perform protocol file transfers

After QVT/PM is started, you must perform a config operation in order to begin
communications. This may be done in one of two ways: you may invoke the
'Comm' option from the 'Setup' menu, or you may load a pre-existing config
file (using the 'Open' option from the 'File' menu). A sample config file,
'DEFAULT.VT', is provided with this package.

Note: the file DEFAULT.VT will, if present in the default directory, be
loaded at startup time. The settings contained in this file will be the
ones in effect.

QVT/PM config files are created by the 'Save As' menu option (File menu). They
must have the extension '.VT' in order to be recognized by the 'Open' menu
option. You also create and/or edit config files with an ASCII text
editor, such as the OS/2 system editor, 'E'.

Dialing
-

Phone numbers may be associated with specific host configurations by
placing a 'phone=' directive in the .VT file for that host. This number
will then come up automatically when the 'Dial' menu is invoked.

QVT/PM also supports modem initialization strings. These may be entered
as 'init=' directives in the .VT file. NOTE: if your modem responds
to a carriage return as a command terminator (as most modems do), you
MUST include a carriage return, notated as ^M, at the end of your
initialization string. For example, 'init=at&c1&d2x1^M' would be a
valid initialization string for a typical Hayes-compatible modem.

File Transfer
-

When performing Kermit file transfers, make sure that you set the parity of
the remote Kermit so that it matches QVT/PM's parity setting. Otherwise, the
transfer will fail.

After a file transfer has been started, you can use the mouse to switch to
another OS/2 application while the transfer is proceeding. Note that
you should not switch to the DOS Compatibility Box, as this will cause
QVT/PM's communications activity to be suspended.

Login Script Processing
-

QVT/PM supports a simple script language for the purpose of automatically
performing routine login sequences. The statements included in the
script language are fully documented in the QVT/PM User Manual (provided
to registered users).

Keyboard Mapping
-

QVT/PM is intended for use with a computer with the 101-key Enhanced
keyboard. The DEC LK-201 keys are mapped as follows:

        DEC IBM

        PF1 F1
        PF2 F2
        PF3 F3
        PF4 F4
        - (minus) Grey Minus (on keypad)
        , (comma) GreyPlus
        Enter Enter
        HoldScreen ScrollLock
        Setup (no key, use menu)
        Data/Talk Not Supported
        Break F5
        F6 - F9 F6 - F9
        F10 F11

        F20 Shift-F11

The following keys are located on the separate cursor keypad:

        Arrows Arrows

The following keys are located on the separate 'Editing' keypad:

        Find Insert
        InsertHere Home
        Remove PageUp
        Select Delete

Versions of QVT
-

QVT has also been implemented in versions for Microsoft Windows and for
the Apple Macintosh. Both versions employ the capabilities of their
respective graphical environments in order to provide exceptionally
complete and accurate VT emulation, including features such as smooth
scrolling, 132 columns, and double-size characters.

WinQVT, like QVT/PM, supports background file transfer; MacQVT is
fully Multifinder-aware.

Thank you for your interest in QVT/PM!
